Which controllers have you been using? They're all pretty different. The Les Paul GH controller is usually considered the best, bonus points if it's a wired kiosk one.

yeah you only need a couple chords, then you just build up speed and actual rhythm, learn how to read notes

Learning real guitar wrecks your fingers until your skin hardens, it also strains your right forearm like a motherfucker if you play fast stuff. I'm not saying he shouldn't but he's not gonna have half as much fun.
