This brings about some quality of life changes and general improvements to the game as well as letting you customize things like pet AI, highly recommended. I believe you just extract the game to the elona main folder and launch from the coffee cup icon. Made by some qt named annabannana and more recently taking up the torch a guy named bloodyshade.

Pets can now use shift cores on their own (if you're not familiar with those, it's basically Power Rangers-style transformation), and it's possible to give them dialogue for using them via talk file. (You have to manually use a shift core on them to customize their transformed name/sprite/profile, though.)

Never played before so I downloaded and thought I'd give it a try. Downloaded both the game zip and the Elona Custom zip, extracted them both to the same folder, then launched the coffee cup icon. Wanted me to make a text document titled "error", so I did, then it worked when I launched it again. But after character creation, the game crashes and says "Error #1". Can't find any info online about a crash like this besides crashes on older versions, where the solution was to update to a newer version. Any help on what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated.

When you get your first wish, consider getting Seven League Boots, which lets you travel much faster on overworld. Any escort/delivery quest will be significantly easier and will be a decent way to get ok-tier equipment, gold, and platinum. Just avoid the "girlfriend" ones or you'll get fucked.

Basically, the more learning you have the better spells you can get and more points you have to spend on skills later. I recommend also not going to vernis untill you can kill starter guides at your home (the go off after you visit vernis).
What i do when start new char (no heir deeds required, but they help if you make a gene) is to go to start as farmer, get mad dosh, buy nuke in derphy (it costs something like 12k IIRC) and blow it in your house. you get mad dagger and bow from each of guides.

Exile is great, it has innate float and I think can see invisible enemies. It's default ai pattern allows it to shoot multiple darts in one turn at enemies.
Also definitely keep your fire dragon child and evolve it all the way. It has the boost ability that greatly increases its speed and strength, which not many other creatures have.

You picked the best time to start, it's easier than ever to make a new character in Elona. I started back when it cost 50 plats to learn a new skill. Now you get a free skill token every level up that you can give to a trainer for free skill lessons.
First tip, get thelittle girl which is objectively the best pet.
Second tip, your little girl is probably wielding a heavy sword and a shield, take off the shield and the little girl stops getting penalties to the heavy weapon. This turns her into a killing machine.
Third tip, gardening is the easiest eay to make plats.

The easiest god heart is from the doggod in the forest of doggod. You'll probably need to be fairly high level to beat him though. Don't even bother trying for Siva the Destruction, that bitch will mince you before she even appears on screen.
Once you are comfortable fighting in level 200+ dungeons you can get God Hearts from god race enemies. Stag God does not drop them, but Atlas, Element Dragon, Five head god all drop them fairly frequently. You can savescum the drops if you want.
You also get several God Hearts while clearing the story dungeon in act 3.

There you can read and decide which deity you wanna follow that goes with your character and you can change your religion any time you want (with a penalty that last for a year). Opatos and Jure are pretty easy to gain favor from and they can help you with staying alive.

In the danger level 60 range you get cluster bomb rocks. They can teleport you to them like hand type enemies and they deal at least 300-600 damage. Also, when the servers were still up I saw "Anon-kun was killed by giga bomb rock in Rhemido" so I don't think it ever gets better. use water bolt or throw a potion

Why is the itemisation in this game so terrible? I've been using the same Precious artifacts ever since I was halfway through completing the Act 1 Main Quest, bar a couple of more recent upgrades like the Mournblade and Assault Gold. I'm not tempted to swap any of it out for some generic armor that gives an increasingly-insignificant boost to my gardening and dual wield.
And the new precious items added in Elona+ all seem so underwhelming. With the possible exception of the War Suit, which is half-decent, what am I meant to be looking forward to using? Everything just feels so interchangeable and bland. 'Oh, great, fear resistance, because I'd totally been playing up to Act 3 without coming across that sooner'.
Even at the ultimate high-end, the god weapons seem to be ruined by having a ridiculous to-hit malus.
I love Elona, but fuck, itemisation and upgrading your loot is normally the best part of any RPG and in this game it's a dud.

It's certainly much stronger late-game but shift cores are nice to have. Unless there's a feat you want (wish for "miromi") I say go for it.
If you 'make a gene' you can transfer your non-precious items in your inventory to a new character and "reset" your wish counter back to 0

10,000 turn speed and pv penalty. Doesn't really damage you that much, it's like a 10-30% reduction. Just stick to slightly lower level dungeons until it's over, or rely on your pets more. As a magic user it didn't hurt me that much because all I did was buff myself and heal pets and have super accuracy magic that one shots things at my level.

I hadn't played elona for awhile, I finally saw this custom AI stuff. This is so great, my pets are actually useful as fuck throwing out buffs, heals and debuffs. Before I was always worrying about a rare spawn fucking up all my suicidal pets.
I don't even want to fight myself, I just want to make cool synergistic AIs for pet teams.

Yeah it's really nice though I think being able to teach pets abilities is rather overpowered. For some reason I get the magic equip buff when the Exile casts it so I have it on all the time without needing to spend any sp. I'd imagine the same applies to Super Armor.

Isn't it wasting space to check all these statuses and buffs multiple times? I assumed it just went down through the list, executed the first valid condition, then started from the top again? You wouldn't make it to the buff checks further down if the buff wasn't on in the first place.
I don't know if the custom AI gets updated anymore, cause I've had a few things I wanted to do but wouldn't be reliable to use for their AI. First problem was making a healbot who would run to allies at low hp. The only check they can do is for 'Ally'. I assume they can't remember which ally they've been running to save every time the logic is checked. So if 2 low hp allies are far apart, they could end up running back and forth trying to get to both of them at once. If I had a bunch of slots for logic I guess I could manually check ally distance and HP over and over ensuring the closest weak ally always gets checked first but that's kinda overkill.
Second problem was dealing with enemy resistances, maybe their attack doesn't work but there's no way for them to check it. Especially problematic if I want them to keep using debuffs like insult until the target has been effected by it. If the target cant be dimmed they will endlessly insult it until they get very tired, I don't know if pets get tired though? Still fun to play with though, might've been a decent bandaid fix if there was some kind of OnTarget 1 time only logic you could use to just kinda probe the enemy with debuffs regardless of whether it works. At least using my defender for party healing has a lot of wiggle room thanks to healing rain AoE.

Yeah I actually wasn't sure if the game executed them sequentially when I first tested this.
Thought it didn't because I could've sworn I saw my pet attack before it buffed/debuffed. It's set up like this so that it forces it to apply buffs from longest duration to shortest.
I'm starting to think it is sequential because my Exile never heals when an ally is dying because there are enemies to target, and it seems scripts only run when in combat.
Might have to clean up that mess after all.

That's exactly why I have a pet use Heal Rain only if an ally is within a certain distance.
I have Call Familiar hotkeyed so if I notice a pet dying, I quickly recall and resummon when near a pet with Heal Rain.
Waste of player turns but it's the best solution I could find without having the pet's AI occasionally shit itself.
I also have a melee-fighting healer and since they all shadow step to the same enemy, coverage usually isn't a problem except that its casting skill is kinda shit compared to the Exile.
Wonder if the "preserve target entity" would fix the targeting issue.

Yeah that's rough. It's why I stick to the magical debuffs.
While special enemies have a chance to resist it, it's guaranteed to work eventually.
Also fairly certain pets don't spend sp when using abilities. All of mine are shadow stepping all over the place constantly even after its sp-cost nerf.

Talk to your pet, select "other", "customize AI", "Teach". There's a stat requirement for your pet to learn certain abilities but I forget what it is.
Abilities and spells have a governing attribute, so if you don't see the spell/ability in the teach menu, your pet's corresponding attribute is too low.
The abilities aren't learned instantly and the menu shows you its progress. Cast chance is equal to Current Progress.
If the pet successfully uses an ability, progress increases. If it fails, there is a small chance progress increases.
You'll see a message about your pet "not knowing how to respond to the situation" if a pet tries to cast and fails,
but you'll also see that message if there's an error in your AI script so be careful.
