Compared to what game? Or are you talking about the game on it's own?

It's a fairly decent RPG that improved on the previous one massively, it has a very interesting story and theme with the exception of the Legion for obvious reasons.

As far as themes and locations goes, it's quite an amazing game and there's a reason it still sparks discussion today.

In terms of gameplay, the skills and atributes matter just enough that they feel impactfull but not too much that they override the whole FPS part of it. It does an excelent job at being an action-RPG on it's own.

If you want to compare it with F3 or F4, it's a better RPG than either and while the gunplay in 4 is better (since Id actually did that part) it's pretty clear that F4 and NV went different directions in many fields, sometimes to hilarious results considering how Bethesda actually wanted to mimick Obsidian in storytelling to some degree.

If you want to compare it with F1 and F2, they are entirely different genres but FONV is a fairly decent "translation" of tabletop isometric turn-based gameplay to an action FPSRPG.

The game has it's flaws and it's not perfect, but what it does well, it does it very, very well. You can argue that some other game does it even better, and it's probably true (if you care to give an example) but it doesn't mean that NV is a bad game though.

However Underrail is an isometric turn-based RPG, is it not? Comparing it with New Vegas doesn't make much sense, unless you consider only the points they have in common and judge on them alone, like story, longevity and variety of gameplay options like weapons and armor.

Even then, weapons and armor affect the game in different ways. In a turn-based RPG, they give you stats and allow certain tactics while in an actionRPG, they make the game feel entirely different with some armor slowing you down or weapons that force you to stay moving, etc.

It's really not a fair comparison at all.

The only point one can compare both games is story, and even then you can only say that X's story was better\worse than Y's story, not that the game as a whole was worse or better than the other.

But considering that I've barely seen anything related to Underrail's story posted while New Vegas still has threads to this day, I'd wager NV story is far better.

I disagree. New Vegas has a theme it runs through with it's main story, solidifies it with it's side-quests and even further reinforces it with the DLC, much like F1 and F2 did.

It shows you a world where violence is common and life is cheap up to cynical levels, just like the previous ones.

Oh come now, the story is what drives the entire game, sets the political state for the entire mojave and gives motives to every faction there, with a lot of history spread in every location related to it.

Story being barely used is really one of the dumbest criticisms anyone can make about that game, especially when it's the one that popularized the "shandyfication" term since that's the best way to explain it's story.

Compare Survival from NV with Outdoorsman of previous games and many other skills like gambling and the like that either have very, very specific uses, mostly quest-related, and then look at NV where several dialogue options require different skills, each one also having passive effects that are always usefull on their own for a variety of situations.

Even the weapon skills, that influenced only your accuracy in F1&2 do exactly the same in NV and 3, only they can also be used for other stuff like dialogue checks and crafting requirements.

I'd even argue the oposite of what you said, using Science as the best example. Several RPG mechanics and statistics in Fallout1&2 are very rarely used, being often considered dump stats or for challenge playthroughs, mechanics and statistics that reappear in NV with far more frequent uses.

Fact is, Science is largely unused in previous games as are several other skills, something almost resembling Toaster Repair from the original Wasteland.

Again, half of this is subjective (you won't like it if you don't like FPS gameplay) and it's not terrible at all. It's one of the improvements it has over F3, with the recoil, bullet spread and other variables that largely depended on your Skills in F3 are toned down in New Vegas to the point that unless you're completely unskilled and\or have no STR to wield a specific weapon, you'll have no problem firing it.

If you want a more honest answer: I'd say they are equal in story as far as choice and shaping the world is concerned. Vegas is probably a little better for dialogue writing. However, subjective as it may or may not be, gameplay is more fun in underrail and in taditional RPGs in general. Specifically, however, stealth in Underrail is greatly superior to New Vegas and very viable as well. Crawling through vents and setting series of booby traps: can't beat it.

Also, I think you're putting too much importance on the tattoo. Realism isn't really the game's strong suit and it's likely just a way to adorn the character, nothing else.

If you look at the rest of the game (not the story or world) it actually makes sense, the devs want to characterize her with cool details, not particularly make it look more realistic\authentic\believable\deep, just like everything else in the game, including the story.

There is no skimping on dialogue. The game as lots of NPCs, many more than in New Vegas, and each as a unique personality and a unique introduction that describes their appearance. Many have mannerisms as well. The world building is better than New Vegas as well. The settlements are larger and more populated than in New Vegas. Trade and politics between them have more thought put into and make more sense than in New Vegas. Choices in story as far as picking who to ally with and who will "win" are at least on par with New Vegas. Right now I am a low ranking miltary officer in one faction but also spying on them for another. Overall, the story is far less "good vs. evil" than New Vegas. The factions aren't all in inexplicable total war from the very start.

It's only seen as such in New Vegas because of cut content and lack of time to further explore the factions.

A very shallow perspective will see NCR as the "good" guys, the Legion as the "bad" guys, House as the "nihilistic with a wicked sense of humour" guy and Yes Man as "fuck u" guy.

However a deeper look makes the NCR the "slow and corrupt but fair, stable and just" guys, the Legion becomes the "fast, brutal but efficient and safe" guys, House the "if you can't defend yourself, you stand no chance in this world" guy and Yes Man the "I have plenty of reasons to distrust you all, I think I can do a better job too anyway".

There's also the nuance that, with the exception of Yes Man, everyone else is clinging to the past. Military traditions and country institutions for NCR, the past glory of Vegas for House or even the Roman Legion for Caesar. They all believe the solution to rebuild the future is found in the past, which might be considered a terrible mistake, making the Yes Man the only sensible option.

There's a lot there that would make those factions make a lot more sense and they aren't "all in inexplicable total war from the very start", the game at least gives you plenty of context about them, their motivations and why they fight (Hegelian Dialectics is a popular term here). It could have been a lot more if they showed you the region behind the Legion or more NCR settlements than just forts.

I'll tell you something: I played and enjoyed both games but they had me coming back for different reasons. With New Vegas it was always the comfyness of roleplaying in the desert. Lore was nice enough to feel real but not all that thought-provoking. With Underrail, what keeps me coming back is "what challenge will I face next" "who can I still talk to or where else can I look t solve this current mystery." Overall, a game like Underrail is more satisfying because the world isn't all that gets more thought put into it. It's the quests, too, and the situations you find yourself in. Paying close attention to what people say, picking up on clues…

I am telling you: if you liked New Vegas for the quests and stories, then try Underrail. It does a better job.

No need too. Several NPCs in the game talk about the current war, give their views on everyone and provide plenty of context to hate or love everyone depending on your world views.

But you didn't traveled through it in real-time, you have that overmap in 1 and 2. This means that crossing said desert wasn't so much of a chore and it wasn't as present either.

It's personal preferences since I prefer urban ruins over deserts, but also because it was far too big during the initial U, especially for a game with nothing similar to a mount to speed travel up.
