I only do it if it makes sense for the story I have in mind for my character. However…I will almost ALWAYS have a character in game that has a story reflecting being barefoot all the time.
I'll add on to it that I basically check the feet in every game and judge an MMO for how well they model feet. FFXIV can, at least, be modded to have pretty awesome looking tootsies.
