A couple interesting concepts I've come across of late that I'm including in a tale I'll write some day:

High Humans

Pre-fall man in the world of regular people. In western literature this is like the Númenóreans, longer lived and blessed with competency if not proficiency in anything they choose to pursue. Like a race of Witchers. In scifi this could be precursors/forerunners/hyperboreans/Atlanteans etc. Technology beyond the current understanding of physics resulting in a demigod status. The Engineers in Aliens-verse fit this.

In manga I came across the phrase in an isekai with the backstory of the protag ending a death game. All his comrades were regarded as part of a race called "High Humans" who were thought to have gone extinct hundreds of years ago. In reality they logged out the very second they got the chance. A level 100 something in a world where fourty is considered legendary, who almost literally shits better steel than the masters of the dwarven forges.

Ruins of Post-scarcity Cities

Read a silly book that might have inspired Ancient Aliens, In Search of Ancient Gods, where literally every megalithic structure and representative carving was seen by the author as evidence of xeno influence. Got me thinking though, how would a post-scarcity city look post-collapse? How would a community look where time and entertainment were the only trades of worth? Would it be a snapshot of a Buddhist sand mandala, always changing with the whims of the occupants? An enormous and horizon spanning sculpted garden, winding and mazelike with living stone foundation? Or would it all become a megacity, cramming more and more meat into tighter spaces as populations grew without merit or reason?

Only a few works I know of dealing with this to any extent. Nier: Automata doesn't go to the point where skyscrapers have fallen and tech has been remembered, Monster Hunter where some bunkers and towers still stand and again tech is remembered if not recovered, BLAME! in a topsy turvy way, and Pokemon where the I don't know what the fuck is happening.

I've been fucking around with different versions of this map off and on for about eight years now, going by "last edited" tags on various files. Most recently I've been re-drawing the landmasses and coastline shape in general to something that feels more realistic and less pseudo-random (newer on the bottom). Lots of flowing landmasses shaped around bodies of water, smoother coasts with less arbitrary jaggedness, overall closer to how most real-world coasts are typically shaped when viewed at a world scale. Had a lot of ideas about the people and civilizations that live in it but never really had the drive to go further than drawing and re-drawing maps, and even that, I barely do anymore. It is nice to come back to every now and then, though.

I still want to adjust the north-central areas somewhat (I don't like the look of the islands up in the middle; I have ink sketches that I like the look of, but translated to Illustrator the results never hold up) and maybe tweak the coast of the southeastern region a bit more. Besides that, I think redoing the coast is close to being done (maybe one final overall pass to add more islands), and then I might get around to adjusting the mountain ranges (not pictured) to the new layout, since they do need some changes. Rivers are a higher priority, but elevation needs to be done before rivers. I may skip with plate tectonics this time around. The mountains might be slightly bullshit as a result but as long as it isn't Toril-tier craziness it should be fine. The world has a bit of bullshit landmass already, I think as long as it isn't omnipresent it's ok to fudge minor things here and there.

I'm fond of this, generally when it leans to the more moderate side (ie non-"Lost Tales" Numenor).

>Ruins of Post-scarcity Cities

>pokemon

Wasn't the first that came to mind the Rama series by Clark was, but it weirdly works as the best example in popular culture. Think it was the other works associated with BLAME! , like Biomega, that kind of covered what happened in a less topsy turvy way.

One thing, don't immediately discount religion. Because when one's own time is paramount, you can have different avenues to make the best use of it. Like raising pokemon, to be the very best. Giant stadiums are not out of the question.

i like this concept too. but you know what would be better? if it wasnt a race as is but a state of being that any man can reach through going past the limits of mind, body and soul. getting a step closer towards divine.

and then make it partially inharitable.

Either way it seems a bit apples to oranges to compare it to races.

Bootleg space marines who are author's leftist hot take on the social injustice where highly skilled professional has the audacity to demand a lot of money and goes through rigorious training to provide a service that is necessary for continued existence of people?

I've been on a pets kick, it's sort of underappreciated for fantasy despite a lot of players keeping one. Granted most are meant for combat but I know a few people who've had PCs with just normal pets they like. So have a couple ideas:

Silk Moths

Since irl silk moths have been domesticated to be all fluffy and unable to fly let's take this to an extreme. People breed them into all sorts of sizes and colors, different breeds exist based on their size and wing shapes. The most common are the Housemoths, about the size of a small cat with short rounded wings, most have eye spots and come in brown, gold, yellow, or amber colors with white and black ones being rare. They're raised much like chickens and can clumsily glide, be taught some tricks, and are very mild mannered.

Luxury breeds of housemoth have more exotic colors and distinct patterns, some ancient households have bred a similar pattern to their family crest onto the wings of their pets.

Garden Golems

Made by the dwarves, tiny golems which range in size from about handheld to as large as a big dog. Less animal and more semi sentient animate object, they're popular for people who enjoy quiet companions with little need for care or attention, or those who enjoy gardening as the golems tend to grow moss. Some are made to even accommodate planting to serve as walking flower pots.

While they're not very cuddly pets they are great decorations, are easy to care for, allow a lot of creativity to go into 'dressing' them, and since they are semi sentient they an love you more than a normal pet rock. As they're gentle by nature it's a great first pet for kids as small ones can't really hurt them or be hurt by them while still having the needs to teach children good pet keeping practices. Not to mention the smaller ones can be very cute when they get affectionate, plucking small flowers or collecting baubles to show appreciation.

As for pets, I've read about tiniest beholders called Eyeballs, that can be used as pets, but I can't find any art of them. I think they're just supposed to be a fist-sized flying eyeball.

Eyeballs were renamed into Gazer after or in 3rd Edition.
