How do you handle the disproportionality between 'greater' beings in terms of classes?

Obviously, they aren't meant to be played per se, but they often have higher level creatures which advancement listed as 'By character class' and the like, which doesn't jive well.

Example: A cloud giant is a 17 HD monster described as potentially entering the cleric class... But what fucking good are half the cleric spells in the context of a 17 HD creature? Whats the value of a +1 to-hit (bless) or 1d8+1 hit points (CLW)?

I know there are a few examples of ways to handle it (for example, specific prestige classes, as was done with the dragons in Draconomicon to some degree), but I'm curious to hear how others handle these scenarios.

+5% chance to-hit. Self-explanatory.

+2-9 HP recovered per day. Beat someone up, run away, come back while they're still trying to heal up.

Heal people, get paid money for it.

Think long-term and big-picture. That's the advantage of spell-casting. The amount of creative application possible might grow with spell level advancement, but it starts as early as 1st Level. That's how you get "caster edition" horseshit to begin with - because WotC doesn't have designers competent enough to think of all the applications.

Character classes are designed for characters, while the books may suggest that creatures take up class levels in them it isn't really effective as you've noticed because they tend to have prodigious abilities without them but short of a lot of homebrewing per creature there isn't a way to fix it.

Well, since a d20 has a flat distribution a +1 is exactly as useful for a storm giant as it is for a kobold when each are faced with a worthy opponent. Its an extra 5% chance to hit.

For the rest, it depends. If your trying to integrate a storm giant into a lower lvl campaign then the savage species approach is probably best. Have the giant be a juvenile and trade hit die for class lvls. If its a high level campaign then consider making them eligible for prestige classes directly. But they're still going to suck as a cleric. They would be in the same boat as a 14th lvl fighter who decided to switch to cleric, its not a great idea mechanically so it would have to be character driven. If its the low lvl campaign then maybe alternate between HD & class lvl.

From the perspective of the giants they probably don't see a lot of difference between a 1st and 5th lvl cleric. But they don't notice lots of things that seem important at a human scale. So an acolyte might be any cleric than can't raise the dead yet. And their "third" recognized lvl comes when they can cast heal.
