Fatal the 2nd edition. The new project to make FATAL into a playable game...kind-of...maybe...

I hope the character creation will be rid of being forced to autistically roll for every detail. No fun playing something you have next to no control of. Especially with such particularities being included.

What's the point? Outside of FATAL's comedically overwrought complexity and absurdist outlook on sex, there's really nothing there that's remotely interesting. Strip out the legendarily dumb bullshit from the game and you've got a dumb, poorly made RPG. May as well put all that effort into making your own game.

Was FATAL always set in 13th century Europe? Somehow I always missed that detail in between... everything else.

It wasn't, FATAL was originally set in a fantasy version of medieval Europe sans non all European elements, such as Christianity. For some reason kobold had indonesian names though because Byron Hall just sort of gave up I guess.
Reading through this, this isn't really FATAL as much as it's "I've lifted some ideas and names from FATAL and replaced everything else with D&D. This is most obvious in the species section where instead of FATAL's "You can play a human, a dwarf, or an elf. Everything else is a baby-eating chain rapist that will kill the game the moment you enter play". Now we have a fairly standard-ish mix of generic fantasy races (though I guess the child-eating ogres and weird sex stuff could be added later).
So instead of kobolds being sliver goblins that like slavery and rape we have D&D style dragon-kin kobolds sitting alongside dragonborn and lizardmen (both never being mentioned in real/old/fucking-kill-me-now FATAL).

OP, if you're serious about making this playable, I'd suggest ditching the "FATAL but playable" idea and just make the "medieval Earth meets D&D" you seem to want to. While there's no harm in very carefully taking basic concepts from FATAL, what makes the game so infamous is that mechanically there's basically nothing that would be fun to play and the lore is a mixture of incredibly dry information on things players don't care about mixed with pointless information on each race's favoured sexual positions. There really isn't enough there to salvage and at the point you repurpose what is there you'll have had to change so much you might as well call it a completely unrelated product.
As it stands this... Isn't really FATAL and it doesn't capture the intended spirit of FATAL. Hall was a stickler for 'realism' where possible and you pretty evidently want to end up with a game. For example where FATAL stuck social status behind a 1d100 roll with no option for re-rolls, you've made noble status a feat that can be purchased (presumably at character creation). While this is certainly more fun than getting screwed over and locked into some slave job it does mean that your average party are going to be adventurers and heroes rather than a random selection of the gameworld's population with no bias given towards player-favouritism like Hall evidently wanted to model.
Oh, and creating content for Europe+Asia+Africa is a fucking terrible idea. At least wait until you have enough content available to run an entire campaign before you start adding multiple continents to your work. Either you're going to end up with small islands of detailed content and vast swathes of nothing in between or you'll end up with a small patch of detailed content sitting in a vast ocean of places players have no reason to ever acknowledge.

True, with how it diverged - it might as well not be FATAL at this point. At least, the original intent was to take what was there and make it playable.
But, at the same time, outside of the name, doing so made it entirely different. It was worth a shot anyways. Considering I said it was an experiment for my own amusement.
I'll give it a temporary working title that's different in the meantime while I edit it.
For now it'll be my "what if a Shadowrun-like event where fantasy elements suddenly appeared on Earth, but in the medieval times" project.
Content-wise, I'm sticking with Europe as the main focus to boot. Granted, this doesn't even have any European content (besides Religions) at the moment. We'll see how that goes.

The most notable part of FATAL is also the most superfluous one: The sexual elements. Nobody wants to play out their favorite sex fantasy in front of three other sweaty cheeto-stained neckbeards. That part would only work in extremely specific situations, where you have people with the same fetishes that also want to fuck each other, like running a table at a BDSM club during swinger night.
If you cut that out, FATAL is basically a simulationist relatively low-fantasy RPG, and you can get the same experience with GURPS: Middle Ages or one of the other historical books.

If. Only.
Search for magical realm stories. Also, you forgot the abomination that is yaoi gurrrlz. For example, see the start of Elfslayer Chronicles.

Like I thought, FATAL is so broken, if you try and fix everything wrong with it, you end up with a completely new game. Especially since the creator neglected to finish the setting.
Which isn't a bad thing, at the end of it you have a whole new RPG you made yourself, like stone soup, lol.

There is no 1E and 2E FATAL. The "1E" version was incomplete. It had blank spaces for missing art and was missing many of the rules. The "2E" version is the more or less complete version.
Anyway, I bought the fatalrpg.com domain. What should I do with it?

So there is a Playable Beta, and a final release? Sounds like two editions to me. Afterall we treat BX D&D and BEMCI D&D as different editions.
Host the pirated pdfs of the game, create a 3rd-ed using your d%-based generic of choice.

I don't know about hosting the pdfs. They are pretty much orphaned works at this point but you never know when byron hall might pop out of nowhere and get pissed at people for hosting his stuff. I mean the book is almost 1000 pages long so he probably cares about it so some extent, even if he probably never made any money off of it.

Alright but theres just a few things you should know first.
1. I run FATAL like I run pretty much any other game, meaning if I forget a rule I'm not going to bother to take forever to look it up, this goes doubly so for FATAL since the book is 1000 pages long.
2.The recordings are almost entirely unedited. I say almost because my laptop would cut out sometimes and I would have to start the recording up again a few times. Originally I was going to but I thought it was better if they were not just to prove that the game can actually be played without any trickery.
3. Don't expect me to be the greatest GM or whatever. I'm just a regular guy who sways towards the OSR style of things a bit.
4. When I remember too, I make all my roles out in the open.
So anyway here it is: http://fatalrpg.com/files/ep2.mp3
I heavily suggest you skip past the first 7 mins since its just people dicking with the microphone. The occasional claps are from when I thought these might be edited at some point.
And then here's the next: http://fatalrpg.com/files/ep3.ogg
This was months after the last one and on spur of the moment so I forgot quite a bit of stuff like FATALs currency system and how exactly things ended last time but whatever. Less clapping and the game starts right away so you don't have to skip anything. All attempts at anonymity are abandoned.
There is no ep1. Theres a bit of a recap in 2 so don't worry about it.
Enjoy this during your quarantine.

And too be honest, and to keep this thread on track I guess, as someone who has ran the game, to make a FATAL 2 all you would really need to do would be to just trim out most of the sex stuff and make character creation faster.
In my opinion theres already a decent game in there, its just thats its covered up by a bunch of angsty rape stuff and other shenanigans. The actual skill system of FATAL is pretty simple for the most part. And you can see that if you listen to the recordings we did. Every skill check is just 3d10 and beat a target number.

> trim out most of the sex stuff and make character creation faster.
ironically it is already optional, lot of times the book outright tells you to use parts depending on what game you wanna run. during char creation it's literally the first thing when you get to sexual features. so the anal circumference meme doesn't even apply unless you specifically run a game like that, and if you do you can go off the rails in literally any system, bitch-ass basic dnd included.
>Below are optional measures of the body. These are provided so that the sexual dimension of role-playing may be included at the Aedile’s discretion.
same for rare features.
>covered up by a bunch of angsty rape stuff and other shenanigans.
it's not even that imo, it's just written by a borderline autistic statistician going overboard with realism without any "do we really need that and does it add anything to the game?" design filter. sure, you can use it for fetish wankfodder since it has the rules for getting literally assfucked to death by dragon, but it never felt to me that was the main intent, more trying to be "complete" in every aspect, to the point you can roll retard strength as a bonus. and fwiw the event table is pure gold.
have been contemplating for ages to make a char creator for it just because, maybe even combat simulator (still missing the npc appendix tho), might get around to it now with the quarantine and if there's actual demand...

I've thought about making a character creator as well since it would be handy but it always seemed to be to tedious to be worth it. If any of my players characters die I just plan on having them roll a few times to adjust some sub ability scores and maybe redistribute skill points and call it a day. A combat simulator would be interesting though. What do you mean you're missing the npc appendix though?

Although I guess I must say, if you do make a character creator for FATAL you would probably be the first person to do that technically since I've heard the one that actually came with the game is buggy and doesn't work properly. Although I've never seen it or tried it to verify.

In the version I'm using there isn't any primer for NPC creation but it does give you 10 pregens for each race and tells you to modify them however you want. Except for elves where I guess he forgot to do them.
As for the character creator the difficulty would be in keeping track of the what stats your rolls would affect down the line. Like how BMI affects strength and attractiveness and how pretty much every roll on the facial feature chart affects something different. And if you were going to allow the character creator make player characters as well you would have to allow the user to reroll a sub-ability score in exchange for a mental illness.
But either way if you're going to do it, now would be the best time. There aren't quarantines everyday.
