Hey /tg/ i was thinking; why is there not any official FF tabletop game. It is perfect for it. It could have its own unique world amd job system. Some sort of cross between 5 and 7 jobs system.

How would you guys craft a setting for it and what wluld the crunch of it be like? Traditional DND stats or something else more unique.

Would there be secondary stats and skills?

I was thinking we could homebrew our own unofficial one as well. I found one online but it is just a 3rd edition copy paste

The reason there's not one is because Square Enix is kind of a really terrible company these days. They don't really know what their fans want or how to finance a project that isn't a 10+ year development cycle that amounts to a half-finished polished turd.

But fortunately, the autism of fans is stronger than the incompetence of Squenix. A number of years ago, some people slapped together a system called FFd6 that may be what you're looking for. Unfortunately, it's been untouched for several years and a lot of the development was doing on the fucking Giant in the Playground forums, so finding a fully up to date PDF and all the other stuff they worked on over the years is quite a chore.

There are also two other FFTRPGs out there. One called Returners and one that is just FFRPG. The latter is up on the trove. And that's not even counting the various mods made for games like BESM and Pathfinder.

I'd try to make the job/class system similar to WFRP. Actual dice mechanics on the other hand might be better off with another system though. You really wouldn't need to make a new setting for it. Since most if not all the classes work in the varrious games, then you could just use one of them.

that'd be a tall order. I think going the FF tactic route might be a good plan. its system felt the most like a table top rpg imho. the class system would need rebalancing but its got potential. getting a decent skill tree would be the key. the game mechanics could be almost any system.

Like it or not, 3.shit's leveling system but with the required multiclassing of d20Modern would work best at the actual tabletop. Trying to replace classes/swapping out class parts is a logistical nightmare when you don't have a computer to track it for you. So stop reinventing the wheel in that regard, and port that levelling system onto a core rules set that isn't shit and have a nice day.

You can nail down some common elements between the games, like the naming scheme for magic spells, summons, monsters, airships, and the like, but past that the rest of the Final Fantasy series is inconsistent in theme and mechanics. From what I understand, though I haven't played it, FF14 seems to pull from a little bit of everything related to FF, having all the iconic job classes, crystals, summons, vague magitek, chocobos, and so on. Although, that doesn't necessarily solve the issue of how to handle the Job Class system in a paper format.

And that is crux of the argument that you don't need to recreate the job mixing/swapping that became the hallmark of the franchise, just get close to it in a system similar to d20 system.

Just, depending on if you're doing FFT or FF3/5/Bravely have hte characters qualify for classes by reaching class/level/ability milestones or have them commune with the crystals.

Or you don't do that, because everyone has been doing that to anything they remotely enjoy for decades and it never works out well, because the d20 system isn't all that great to begin with.

Sounds like you only mean pen and paper rpg. Because there are FF games out there.

Would be nice if people just ditched the regular stats, and try to mimic the games.

One of the big things though would be the "multiclass"/"job"/"ability" system. And yeah, tactics is one of the better inspirations.

>7 jobs system

7 doesn't have a Job system. FF7 has two systems the Materia system which is basically magical runes and socketed items which get more powerful the more you use them, and the limit break system which is basically a meter that goes up as the character takes damage which does not reset when the battle is over. The flavor of this is that your limit break is your character going berserk and the limit meter is accumulated anger.

Limit Breaks characters in FFVII are their jobs. The abilities line up with jobs from other games.

Cloud = Magic Knight

Barret = Gunner

Tifa = Monk

Aeris = White Mage

Yuffie = Ninja

Cait Sith = Gambler

Vincent = Berserker

I think trying to ape a job system like from the games is a mistake. The nice thing about them is that the computer is able to keep track of your progress among 20+ different classes, but that would be a pain in the ass to actually bookkeep at a table. I think the most effective solution would be to have a whole bunch of classes, but characters have multiple class slots so everyone is a combination of several classes.

On top of that, almost every FF after 5 had alternate progression, including the remake of 4. You would probably want to include something like Materia, Augments, or so on. I think a tabletop FF game should lean into customization in a way the games never could.

Sounds like you're trying to shoe horn in the Jobs system into FF7 when there is no system in place to switch between "Jobs". Just because Job equals Class doesn't mean mean every FF game has pick your Class mechanics for abilities. Virtually everything you do is done by Materia in FF7, not your limit break which is your ultimate move this includes but is not limited to things like steal, morph, scan, even just the ability to target "all" instead of just one target.

But I see now you just want the limit breaks from FF7 thrown in, which could be neat but I have never seen that as being part of the Job system.

Right back at you, you cocksucker. I could care less about a scrapped build that wasn't put through, why would I immediately understand you're talking about a scrapped build and not the actual game which i played? All character progression in the released version of FF7 is through Materia, there isn't even any point in bringing FF7 up if you just want the Job System.

The Job System defines itself around switching classes for character progression, there is no class switching in FF7. Outside flavor or introducing limit breaks for each class there is no reason to bring up FF7 for converting the Job System to a tabletop game.

No, but the original argument was that the characters in FF7 were based on traditional FF jobs. And this is still apparent in other non-job-based FF games like FF6, 8, and 9.

So you do want limit breaks? There is nothing else outside socketed equipment that gives your character special abilities. Until the meter fills up, assuming you have no Materia equipped, your characters can only attack and defend.

OP, you should take a look at both FFRPG 4th Edition (ffrpg4e.wikidot.com), for a crunchier take, or Omega Fantasy (pdf attached), for a lighter take on Final Fantasy tabletops.

Even if you don't plan on using either to play, you might still be interested in using them as inspiration to your homebrew.

Pathfinder definitely works better for that I think, but I've only ever seen detailed homebrew for 5E, so maybe a 5E->PF conversion could work. Ultimately, it'd come down to captivating the players in a world that feels and looks like that of the game, so I'd probably sit down and read through the FFXIV wikia since its probably the most comprehensive for Creatures, people, societies, items, etc.
