English class was never one of my favorite classes in school. I have never really wanted to go in depth when talking about anything. Until I started playing D&D and the such. Now I want to make my char actually invested in the world but I can’t put more than 3/4 of a paragraph down. Can you help a new fag out?

Well, What do you want to do with that character? What motivates them? What lead them to the life of adventuring/soldiering/sneaking/heroism/villainy? did they have humble beginnings? who were their parents? what did they do for a living? does your character have any siblings?

This is a very broad question. Don't go overkill on plotting out everything from their favorite type of brew to their hygiene habits, but basic things that will flesh out their virtues/vices could be a good start. Want your character to hate the undead with a passion? have a phobia? what was the event that caused that? keep asking yourself these questions until you have sufficiently figured things out. and most importantly, try not to dump a textbook on your DM.

What class are you looking at? how long has she been in the business of adventure (plus starting level)? There's a very different way to spin things when your character starts out in the campaign as a cobbler who's never swung a sword in his life or if they're already adapted to life on the road.

Game is 5e set in faerun. Starting at 1. Archfey patron planning on going pact of the tome, reconsidering cause we got 2 brads and a cleric. Noble background for a reason of her race of Aasimar and how her family got to converse with Titania, she was allways a waif like thing but it was even worse as a wee person. She has been out for only like half a year traveling from silverymoon to waterdeep

alrighty, charisma based with emphasis on social interaction. ask yourself what races or alignments she would get along with /dispise. is there any demographic she's reluctant to talk to? based on the combo, it doesn't seem like the type of character to be uncomfortable in a conversation. What does being an Anti-tiefling do to her self image? does she have an ego? is she humble about it?

At this point, think about possible mentors and teachers from her past. it never hurts to talk to your Dm about things. You never know if you could work as a good cog in their machine. and they will have the best idea about what they're running. I know whenever my players are working on backstories, I give them huge lists of probabilities they could work with based on designated start points or ideas... (That's how my lizardfolk druid can turn into dinosaurs. I really shouldn't have defined what was where so meticulously lol)

I've gotta head to bed, and I very rarely browse /tg for it's slow post rate. If you wanna try for some ideas, the normies (some of them cucks) on youtube have a lot of good material. Matt Colville and Guy from the "How To Be A Great Role Player" series (the chubby guy with the glasses) have a decent bit of info. both have a great deal of tips for both sides of the screen, and they were my first steps on my way to DMing, as well as improving by giving me better insight on the players.

Good luck

When I'm creating a character and I want to focus on the story, I usually do it after establishing mechanical build design, depending on what's needed or what the campaign is, and I usually end up asking myself a few questions, can sum them up with three crucial ones.

>Who is this person?

A knight, a mercenary, a thief, a troubadour, a poacher, a craftsman… Pick an archetype that loosely fits in the world you're playing in, and choose a class that closely relates to it. When you have your profession, it’ll be easier to go further: imagine their upbringing, experiences and behavior they developed. My advice is not to try to be a "snowflake" - don't try to be unique for the sake of it. In my (extensive) experience, completely mundane characters that started out as total archetypes have shaped their personality and became "interesting" along the way. The more you play, the more you'll know about the character, and fitting traits and behavior will come to you by itself as you progress, without writing long-ass backstories before the game even begins. What your character is going to be like depends on your vision, your GM (if he's not an idiot, he'll notice your attempts and let you expand) and the type of the campaign.

>What does this person look like?

There are different ways to approach this subject. Most of people search the web to find an art that fits the character, but it's good to write up a short description to have it on hand, so you won't need to do it on the fly when it's necessary. Remember to keep it sensible. People who fight for a living are not going to look like supermodels. Don't idealize your characters, keep them grounded in the standards of believability (I won't say realism because it's not about turning fantasy into reality). Read up on how people dressed in a given period of time. Don't go overboard with full plate armors and leather.

>What is this person's motivation? Why is this person joining the quest?

This comes last, after answering the first one you should have a few possibilities in mind. A zealous paladin can be sent on a mission by his family or his order. A mercenary, obviously, desires material wealth or a challenge. A poacher might run out of game in his area or be forced to run, and embark on a dangerous quest to feed his family. A craftsman can be jewed out of his job by competitors and take up adventuring out of desperation or spite. A thief might want to skip town after a failed heist and look for new target. Simple, down-to-earth, purely human reasons work best. Remember that everyone has weaknesses, insecurities, things that irritate them and things they disagree with. Everyone desires something. Even an indifferent cynic who desires to be left alone can take up arms to get rid of those that trouble him.

Don't overthink it, actual development takes place during the game, not before it.

Nothing wrong with that. As I explained already, nobody is saying that you need an extensive backstory before starting the game. Start with an archetype, and let things develop as you go on. If you don't know what you want, I recommend something basic and mundane, easier to get immersed and react to the circumstances accordingly.

Here's the rub anon, a backstory really isn't that crucial. Not everyone needs a tragic past or burning revenge, you can make them invested by just giving them a pertinent career (Mercenary, Alchemist, Cartographer, traveling minstrel, security specialist etc.) that can help you get into the story and then focus on the roleplaying. I have never really enjoyed the need for fuckhuge backstory and have always felt that the actions you do on screen are more important than your mini novella you craft to essentially sell them.

Your character requires but 3 things:

Who they were before they became an adventurer (a farmboy? A bored shopkeep? A street urchin?)

How they came into their first class level (training with the captain of the guard? A wizard's apprentice?)

Their goals for the future (keep it broadbrush and malleable--found a kingdom, get rich, get revenge, find the secret of immortality)

Under no circumstances has a level 1 starting character killed multiple dragons, though it's not impossible for them to know someone who has

Ain't nothing wrong with it only being a few paragraphs. In fact, it leaves it open for you to act how you feel will be in character without checking your notes.

You only really need a rough history of their life up until that point- the major events that have shaped them.

From the sounds of it, you have someone who used to be weak-willed or looked down upon, who gained new confidence to help fulfill the promise she made when she was saved from the plague. That can be quite interesting to roleplay IMO. Her high CHA probably means you'd rarely see her lacking confidence, but when you do it could make interesting moments.

Imagine someone who has managed to convince everyone she's not the weak little thing she used to be. She might pull this off- she can finally honor those who saved her! And then, something goes wrong. The embarrassment and/or guilt is like a sword through the gut, and the idea of falling back into the role of the weakling is horrifying.

That's what I got from your posts so far. Confident, friendly, kind, but maybe a tad egotistical. With deep fears about being seen as weak or useless and some other self-esteem issues. Sort of like con-artists or certain rogues minus any malice.

Combining that with >>409152

> Became an adventurer to pay a debt to those who saved her from the plague.

> Early training or smaller tasks most likely awakened her skills in magic. Perhapes some training with those who worshipped/were fey?

> Future Goal: What you already posted about those who helped her.

As a side thing (heard this before, not so sure if it's good), name a personal item she's taken with her on her journey. Why?
