I never played the official lore, but the sixth edition and the percentual rules were very interesting. I really wanted to do some grecoroman/iron age adventures.

I've been playing it since third edition. The best related game is currently Mythras (name change from Runequest 6th edition due to licensing issues, but it's still Runequest)

Got my start with Mongquest, I agree, it was bad, but I basically hacked it 'til I ended up with something workable, that being said, it was the only way to get anything useable out of it.

New edition, not flawless, but nicely done.

It's mostly R2 with a splodge of 3, or so I hear, and with a dose of Pendragon via the Passions mechanic, which basically is a mechanical reflection of your character's deeper loyalties and enmities, and can be rolled on to augment skill rolls in relevant contexts, or if above 80%, can be invoked by the GM to have you roll to resist a passion-driven impulse, such as to kill a hated enemy, or abandon your family.

There's a fairly humble general that's been rotating on halfchan's /tg/, but there are lorefags who know what's up.

The Mongoose edition?

The main difference is quality.

of lesser import is the time period deipcted; Mongquest is second age, Chaosium releases were always third age.

What's particularly bad about Mythras/RQ6? I know it's not quite the same as RQ3, and I'm not going to defend the first edition of Mongoose Runequest, but I don't see much issue with how Mythras panned out.

Did enjoy RQ7, but it's a bit too tied into the glorantha setting; and I didn't particularly like the Pendragon additions.

Mongquest 1 was shit, don't ever touch it. However, it did give a BRPesq system an opening to the OGL, so there is that.

MRQII was basically a neutered RQ6/Mythras because apparently, Mongoose is ran by mongs who hate things and money. Eventually renamed to Legend and OGL'd.

RQ6/Mythras is basically a percentile based Sword and Sorcery game.
