No.393728 [Last50 Posts]
>Long ago the world died and humanity died with it. Lead clouds roil and churn over an ash grey wasteland or cracked roads, leafless trees, crumbling buildings and filthy oceans full of derelicts and debris.
>But this wasn't the end of conflict just a change. Through technology rather than a virus or act of sorcery the world is now home only to the walking dead. Ruled over by Necromancers, reclusive entities that may be former humans, machines or some foul blend of the two the undead are drones, workers and soldiers in proxy wars fought to maintain the territories of carved out fiefdoms the world over. Or rather most of them are.
>Every so often a small group of special undead will 'wake up'. Girls that physically at least are between the ages of 8 and 17 will one day find themselves in a group together and truly aware for the first time since they died. Perhaps they have been discarded as trash, are being used in a new game by a malicious master or maybe their creator is simply bored and wants to see what happens when these girls have their hearts and minds restored in this hell of a world.
>Your goal is survival, exploration and adventure. The world is harsh and cruel but with your fellow Dolls, your sisters you can chase your 'hope' and work to a better tomorrow.
>English translation:https://nechronica.miraheze.org/wiki/File:Nechronica.pdf
So essentially this is a game about zombie lolis, sometimes mechanical, sometimes barely humanoid mutations, that try to retain their girlish innocence in the rotten remains of a world that died long ago. Theres no saving the world, no great hope. Just adventure and the hope that you can stick together to see it through.
Its also the game my local group has selected for this years halloween "That Guy" grimdark game. We have ideas for characters and a setting but could use some advice. Has anyone played it? any games to storytime?
Tell me your stories of your undead little girls and the suffering they had to abide.

the undead loli thing was a bit iffy but the japanese style undead is very different to ours and so generated interest. their 'undead' can mean basically anything in resident evil.
for example in yugioh theres 'vendreads' which are as much spawn as the walking dead. i wouldnt be surprised if neckbeards on 2ch argue if akiras tetsuo was a 'undead' at the end or not.

Are they? I mean, "undead" isn't really limited to decaying zombies and running decaying zombies either. I mean, just looking through the undead in a DnD monster manual already gives you quite the variety.
Mutants and Frankenstein's Cyborgs are the the only thing that isn't commonly present there.

Their undeads can be termed as more what we would call 'transhuman' to a degree. The closest western equivalent would be what GW replaced the nurgle zombies with called poxwalkers. they arent just dead but also grow tentacles and random appendages.

Invidious embed. Click thumbnail to play. Ran the intro adventure in the back of the main book. During the combat, the double Baroque stole the show using Lick Jowls to stunlock enemies and punching her own Zombie Bomb to AoE everything down, then using the special skill for Baroque to regrow the bomb and do it again. Also took the skill that lets you use a single 1/round ability twice in a round.
Never rolled a die but was invaluable and probably pulled more weight than the Thanatos, though that is not really surprising considering how much Thanatos sucks.
Not really any "That Guy" stuff in the game though, everything is played pretty close to its theme. You might want to look for something else though if you're going for Grimdark, the style is significantly more tragic and uncomfortable than that.
Video related is really close to the feeling the setting invokes.

Comes down to lack of freetime, mostly. Playing games with random faggots is also a pretty mixed bag, too. Scheduling is typically a pretty huge pain in the dick, both in finding a time that works and having interested anons around at the right time to see the ad to know it's happening. And then there's minor issues like anons not having mics or other dumb shit (seriously, buy a mic for $5 and stop holding back people who don't want to have to type everything out, for fuck's sake). Not to mention that the gamefinder thread is full of off-site visitors begging for attention because they can't find a game anywhere else. Also, fuck discord.

You just run multiple "sessions", it really is just the terminology you're used to being used differently.
This is a combat heavy game and just like most combat heavy games all play is structured around when shit goes down. You use the light rules they have in place as your group is exploring and interacting before a combat happens, then there is a fight, then you run the aftermath where the consequences of their actions are adjudicated, XP (Favor) is awarded and spoils (Parts) are distributed. If you have leftovers of either you carry them forward until you want to spend them on something, either advancing your character or putting somebody back together.
Kind of like in old style D&D which was based on wargaming, everything besides fighting is left pretty vague which makes it easy to just make shit up. The only things to remember are that having applicable memory fragments and/or parts either allows you to make checks and/or gives bonus dice (such as a memory of playing the piano allowing you to solve some kind of resident evil style puzzle or assemble all the scattered sheets of a composition correctly) and objectives (karma) should be stated asap unless doing so would reveal something the dolls wouldn't know.
I know the atmosphere of the book is really front and center, but if you just looks at the mechanics on their own you'll realize the game is actually very straightforward and not strange at all.

Nice try OP. But Nechronica wouldn't even work for MIA. There's very little limb loss, and the switching of parts doesn't apply here. Doesn't work for Narehates either, as that part doesn't even come up until you hit the 5th layer, which is really end game shit. There's no loss of memories or attempts to preserve innocence either. The classes don't align at all.
Honestly, Ryuutama would be a better choice, but neither would really capture the surreal, mindbind quality of seeing the Abyss itself. Akihito's artwork is what truly sells the Abyss as such an amazing setting. With out that, it's just a big hole full of monsters and treasure.

Pulled them in, one said "is this nechronica" and they ended up wanting to play anyway
>4 lolis 'wake up' in ruined theme park
>Aged 'Renraku Funland Opening Day!' signs covered in grime and ancient signs of gore
>Setting is a theme park that used undead in mascot costumes as staff, necromancer lost control and they turned feral, some mutating with limbs of impossibly varied design bursting out of the suits
>90,000 visitors on opening day
>no survivors
>Dolls spend first session trying to find a map out of this city sized, ruined theme park
>Have to ride a swan boat over artificial lake full of bloated remains
>Battle with horde unit of lake dwelling mutant undead in the water costs the alice her bottom half
>on the other side a massive pile up of trash from a derailed roller coaster that hit at speed gives two options, haunted house or chuck e cheese style joint
>Thanatos has conversation and remembers some sketch shit going down at chuck's so haunted house it is
>Made the wrong fuckin' choice and the inside is a nest/hive where the mascots take unwilling victims and a massive 'mother mascot' picks them apart/pulls them open and twists and shapes them into mascots with skulls artificially twisted into the shapes of smilling animal people, the defective ones are left in piles of unfinished work weeping or screaming for relief
>Long combat session but they get away alive and alice gets some new legs and Junk gets a vital memory that leads to emergency staff exit. On the way out second Thanatos sets house on fire
>Follow staff exit which leads through engineering passage to a central spire/operations center
>Was boarded up and stuff killed themselves, Junk remembers she invited her friends here back when they were alive and her father was the designer and his office is 3 floors above where the elevator stops
>After some filler fights and a conversation they all gain some madness as they find a hanging body and a note by the man written to his daughter "i'm so sorry i just wanted you to be happy"
>On top floor in glass pie shape top operations level they find some power still running and turn off a 'simulation' button. The blue sky over head cuts out as the dome over the entire park stops projecting a false sky and through the now translucent dome a lead sky of rolling storm clouds and an ashen wasteland stretch off in every direction. They are further from the exit than they started but now they know the outside is its own hell separate from the parks.
>Session ends with the dolls questioning if they even want to leave at all.

I really like it. The only stat characters have is their Action Points, which is derived from their skills and body parts like everything else in the game. Each Round starts at Count 15 and goes down until there is an actor with an AP equal to the count. Said actor then does an action that costs a certain amount of AP. Moving costs 3. So if they were at 10, they'd go down to 7 and it would be their turn again once the Count reached 7. Plenty of timed response abilities too, the kind that happen before someone else's action, during, and after damage. This could result in everyone burning through most of their AP in response to the first move of combat.
The game could get too easy for players but I ran it at the time when there was an ability with a wrong translation of "completely negate one attack" and everyone in the party took it because why wouldn't you? This is tied with the fact that like most Japanese games they're meant for short campaigns so once the players get so much XP they are broken and never meant to get that powerful. If you intend to run a longer campaign you should curb favor(xp) gains as much as possible, but this will result in characters not advancing in strength so it might not sit well with the players.
