Why does everyone play this class completely wrong? I've always been a combat engie guy because I found regular sentries frustrating and too easy to destroy. I started experimenting last week to see if I could find some way to be effective with them and I've come to realize that almost every sentry spot you see people reusing in both pubs and comp are complete garbage.

Quick example with pl_upward, a common spot you'll see here is on the hill or on the second floor above the healthkit. These spots have all kinds of problems but the one I never see anyone use is next to the cliff along the barricade. From here you have excellent sightlines, your tele and dispenser are protected, demomen and soldiers have no safe way to approach you, there's no blind spots, and there's hard cover to protect yourself from spam.

I went from getting maybe 4:2 kills with engie at best to 23:15 and when I had a pyro covering me the only time I ever died was from snipers who I can snipe back most of the time. If I had a vaccinator medic on me I would have been unkillable.

Spam did nothing to my sentry as I had my wrangler out the whole time, if they started going for me I could hide behind the wall or spam RR from the other side faster than multiple soldiers or demomen could damage it.

I could block ubers with knockback, and kritz I could just walk away and spam RR with the wrangler shield on.

I can point out similar spots in just about every map and get the same results.

So someone explain to me why do I see nobody else doing this? Is there some kind of weakness I haven't thought about? I look at competitive guides and videos and every time I see them putting sentries in the same terrible spots as pub players and getting destroyed after maybe 2 kills. Almost all of them have the same issue, the engineer doesn't have hard cover to protect himself with and the sentry isn't sitting back far enough.

Are you talking about the click on the right (if you're Red)? If so, then that use to be the spot that was always used. The problem is that using that spot puts you in danger of both Spies and Snipers. That is why it is no longer used.

Wrangler always seems to me like a surefire way to get killed. Maybe its because I'm so used to being on the wrecking side of wrangler fails.

wrangling is fine until that solly jumps into your blind spot and shoves a crocket up your ass.

No the one on the left (red side) right next to the edge of the map.

>The problem is that using that spot puts you in danger of both Spies and Snipers

But it gives you room to avoid demomen and soldiers almost entirely. I'd rather deal with snipers who I can fight back against and the occasional spy than stickies and rockets.
