CRUX is a source-based Linux distro with a no-frill ports-based package manager, SysV and stability as its main focus. No dependency resolution (can be added using prt-get), no sophisticated process supervision, good ol' simplicity.

Who's it for?

-People who like source-based distros but dislike Gentoo (for valid reasons)

-People who like simplicity

-People who don't like things constantly changing

-People who like ports

-People who love tons of packages being available in repos ;)

https://crux.nu/

You can browse the insane amount of packages here

https://crux.nu/portdb/

Niche packages you might not be able to find on other distros:

-qutebrowser

-stumpwm

-snes9x

-atom!

-micro!

CRUX is a hidden gem and the devs (which is the community) know this and like it that way. They'll keep on developing CRUX until the end of time whether people know it even exists or not

m8, also, no configuration of packages possible? Not even like some BSDs? This sucks.

Am I the only one unable to post with Tor anymore?

Honestly, I like its simplicity (though I prefer sabotage) but I'm too used to Gentoo's features. While Gentoo is the Free/Dragonfly of the BSDs, this is the NetBSD (minus the extensive uarch support).

I used it for a while. Its simplicity is really nice, the way the packages are handled is a good point to talk about, you simply list a directory to know which ports are available and you can easily modify the compiling script to add or remove options, but you'll have to tell pkgmk to ignore the footprint file. The problems I had were not unique to Crux, but to how I have been spoiled by other distros, for instance, I didn't know you have to set the kernel to use UTF-8 before booting it, I had trouble setting japanese fonts on X and couldn't make Anthy (japanese input) to work for shit. The compiling time for Chromium was a nightmare (using a Thinkpad T510) but Gentoo users also suffer this.

Overall I recommend for people looking for simplicity and is not afraid of reading manuals.

Chromium is nice when its up and running but its code is blegh. I prefer Qutebrowser

We don't need another distro thread.

This.

Next time make something like "source based distro general" or something
