I've been getting shit adsl performance lately, very bad SNRs and 20 db attentuation even though I literally live 50 meters from the DSLAM, I've narrowed down the potential causes to a badly connected line probably outside my house, I already have an ADSL splitter in place, no use.

Is there anything I can check for inside or outside? How can I end my suffering without reaching for the noose?

PS- ISP is useless and gay, and no I can't change them.

Clean your phone jack, turn up the noise error correction on your modem and pray.

rotten cables can get problems from damp conditions

Check MAC for gateway, check MAC for gateway's assignment to router's external interface. If possible, reprogram your router's MAC and hop IPs to force system issue of new DHCP lease.

If these cheapest checks fail, next: The demarc needs to be rewired. Likely a point of uncontrolled amorphous annealing in the amalgamate metal used in the terminal block and/or near-end-of-line wires themselves has caused a point of too high resistance following an electrical or radio surge.

After inspection of demarc and still fail, the POTS line from the tower needs to be inspected. Some technician fucked up, nicked a wire, and your getting signal via a radio alt-conduction route, instead of through the main.

Add step inserted after MAC and DHCP check: Inspect signal filter for degradation, and/or replace. There should be a block on the inside of the demarc on the phone line that splits the signal, and outputs line-low and line-high, with the high-frequency+low-filter side being the DSL physical interface. Some times these are integrated into the DSL modem, so a radio fuckup inside the modem requires modem replacement. Rarely, a similar case may also be present, if your ISP has changed or upgraded their DSL signal protocol of choice, or has mis-programmed any modem specific tftp binary downloads that might be used (more commonly present in Lucent cable last green mile systems).

I've recently moved and my internet connection was dropping several times a day. After half a dozen calls to the ISP and having them come out and test the line in the alley, I got up off my butt and laid new high quality cable inside the house. It was a pain in the ass crawling around the attic, trying to locate line I shoved through the soffit, trying to locate holes in the frame underneath insulation, trying to locate dropped line in the wall to pull through the wall plate. After I finished, it was a night and day difference. Now if something goes wrong, I know with 100% certainty it isn't on my side.
