>-What it means-

Decentralization is the process by which the activities of an organization, particularly those regarding planning and decision making, are distributed or delegated away from a central, authoritative location or group.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) computing or networking is a distributed application architecture that partitions tasks or workloads between peers. Peers are equally privileged, equipotent participants in the application. They are said to form a peer-to-peer network of nodes.

Response to FUD spewing bots every time decentralization gets mentioned: The benefits of true freedom far outweigh the risks of free systems being used for illegal content.

How active is Pleroma and Mastodon? How many posts per day are we talking about?

What are the most active decentralized sites? I know ZeroTalk on ZeroNet is very active but ZeroNet is javascript shit.

privacy isn't really about protecting yourself against surveillance anymore. it's now about protecting yourself against control. the amount of manipulation a bad actor can impart on a user through social media is worrisome and has huge implications for self-determination and even democratic governance. this was borne out when facebook admitted it could change the emotions of a user through the use of targeted content. that is truly scary.

btw, check out orbitdb, decentralized database that runs on ipfs.

Orbitdb is shit, on a good day it works but it requires megabytes of javascript code processed through webpack using a shit ton of dependencies. Last time I tried it like a week ago it didn't work on any browser not even on stock chrome.

There's gotta be a simpler suckless way to use WebRTC data streams for decentralized websites. WebRTC is kinda shit anyway because it can't be piped through Tor. Well, technically you might be able to but then your browser is totally fingerprintable as WebRTC is not even compiled into Tor Browser.

Maybe the federation model where normies connect to a normal web server and if you want the real decentralized experience you run your own node is better, or something in-between. I'm not sure whether that's the solution as that model is very vulnerable to adapt, conquer and extinguish tactics like Gab tried to do.
