I hear this debate all over the place, and I'm pretty intrigued to hear your side, preferences and which one came out superior according to your experience.

Any characteristic of either player, mpv does better than vlc.

mpv is better for anime, the last bastion of the cinematic arts left in these latter days.

both work fine for me. mpv seems to be made for autists that like to read manuals and play with terminals and config files

What's the point? They are both free, just try them both out and decide for yourself. It's not as if my choice of media player affects you.

Wrong. It does.
Capitalism is still at work if something is free.
Without a market, there is no seller. If nobody used vlc, its developers would drop it.
However, if subhuman retards such as yourself moved to mpv, and there are already plenty of you using it, then I don't doubt it would go down thanks to you just as many other projects have been killed off by the niggercattle horde that you're a part of.
So do stay on vlc, but try to earn some humanity.

Reddit, go away, VLC isn't even worth considering.
And where's MPC-HC? Fuck off.

The real question is MPC-HC vs. mpv. The answer is still mpv.

This, stock MPV is trash, all its frontends are jokes. Somebody needs to start contributing again.

This is not true. Skipping to certain points in 10 bit encodings is slow in VLC and causes VLC to not read the fucking reference frame causing video gore until the next reference frame.
Low framerate videos (<8Hz) don't work at all in VLC while they work fine in Chromium and MPV. This is a known issue and hasn't been fixed in years.
Decoding of 12 bit HVEC encodings is faster on my 4 core CPU. MPV uses <12% while VLC uses ~36% and while the video stutters at ~3Hz.
MPV on the other hand:
-nearly no features
-doesn't display the encoding or metadata
-inconvienient GUI (Just click the symbol 10 times until you have the right subs or audio track)
-nearly no GUI
t. uses both

It's an endemic problem with vlc. Other video players will pause while they buffer frames. Vlc will continue at its chosen framerate, to the expense of quality. Because of the use of between-frame compression, this makes the video unwatchable. Try to use vlc on a low-end computer and you see the same issue to this day.

Playing a file, then open another one. VLC opens it in the same window whereas MPV opens a second window. This is without changing any configuration/settings. Therefore VLC is superior.
