Most of the places I would normally go to talk about this stuff are down, but this site is running fine and doesn't even appear slow and several other sites, both major and minor, have shown no issues at all. But then some services are completely disabled and a ping won't even come back from the IP. What is this, who's behind it, why is it so selective, and what does it mean for us?

Pic probably related.

First serious one happened 2 or 3 weeks ago, just after Huawei thing. I'd be surprised if all of this is not part of cyberwar between burgers and chinks.

This is something that has been in the news periodically for several months, and I don't know how you could have gone outside today without hearing some guy whining about not being able to access Dicksword because of it.

no such thing. at best a single centralized site is down. seems that even big companies like google and others run their important things on one server even though they have datacenters everywhere. thought that such big companies would have some redundancy but apparently they dont.

Cloudflare was down for 20 minutes at least just a couple days ago. Not just my regional proxy, basically all of them were ending in "gateway error". 8ch was down, and 4chan(nel) were down. When CF came back up, there was a thread on 4/g/ where everyone was saying they couldn't do jack shit.

I could browse here via one of 8ch's real IP addresses (bypassing CF). I could also browse Endchan, which doesn't use CF on most of its nodes. I didn't try other CF sites, but it was probably the same kind of deal.

So anyway, there you go. CF is ironically a central point of failure.

More precisely: July 2nd. Anyway I'm sure if you check 4/g/ catalog, you'll find that thread and probably others related. I use Lynx/Links and can't use their catalog (requires javascript). That's also why I don't post there.

This

Cuckflare is one of the minor reasons the Internet went to shit, firstly because they block Tor by default, and second because it provides a centralized data collection system and common point of failure for a shit ton of sites as you mentioned. The infrastructure for the Internet has become more centralized than it was in the 80s. Might as well be considered a content delivery system offered by a few megacorps by now, with some local franchises to cover the last mile in some cities and countries, and not the resilient net of nets we were promised.

They control a majority of transatlantic cables, and are one of the major teir one networks that happened to be down/troubled durring the time of OP.
