Yes and they sell them back to the corps at a high price especially on open source projects.

One example was chromium browser project where some dev snuck in a code that has a listening port to fetch a blob only when it's online. What it did was make audio recordings and possibly also snap pictures during boot time. The only way to detect this is to backtrace that rogue packet sending back to an IP located at Mountain View CA and I'm sure you know who it is.

It's harder to detect. The code might not have the backdoor in itself but it cleverly is written as an external blob so the only malicious code is just an entry point that you don't know what it really does because it's encrypted/obfuscated and a proprietary executable blob.

There's literally no way to possibly "sneak" code into a properly run project. No piece of code should ever be committed to the main codebase without passing peer review. If backdoors got in, it's not because the developer was clever. It's because the code reviewers failed their job.

If there were no code reviews, then the project deserves to reap the rewards of zero accountability.

the movie was obvious bullshit but software development was a lot different back then than to what it is now.

Google the guy that worked on the banking software that secretly shaved off fractions of pennies of each transaction and put them on one of his accounts. (at least I think that's how it was, I barely remember) Shit was crazy.
