Terry wasn't concerned about using high level programming languages to program the computer. Terry was concerned about not having direct access to hardware because of OS getting in the way of it. If you study TempleOS, you'll find that it doesn't have memory protection in the software. He didn't want the OS to manage the memory, he wanted the programmer to manage the memory which includes the ability to overwrite the memory of other processes. He wanted to directly poke at I/O ports from the application program instead of using an API as the middleman between the programmer and the machine.

Terry clearly had more use/interest for embedded OSes due to his background developing operating systems for his job. That's the skills Ticketmaster needed.
