Anyone got tips on how to get motivated programming/learning to program?

The only reasons I've ever started learning things are because I had problems I wanted to solve myself. I can't think of any problems I have that learning to program could solve, though. Any ideas?

I tried, but couldn't stay motivated to do so.

Tried both text games and graphical stuff.

Motivation is a matter of circumstance. I'm at my post productive when I'm away from home on my laptop that I've not installed a display server on. I'm least productive in my office. Been trying to think of changes I could make to normalize towards the laptop behavior but it's been nothing but failure so far.

Idunno, I like learning new stuff and I feel like once I know what I'm doing I might have a better idea of things I want to change

Motivation does not just come to you. You feel motivation by doing things, not by wishing for inspiration to take over you.

The hardest part is starting while continuing is much easier. If you can force yourself to start to do something, then you require much less effort to continue. The 2 minute rule, or whatever it is called, could be useful to you.

If you find it difficult to be consistent and continue, then you're not categorizing and organizing your tasks properly. The solution is to break a task, or feature, into independent measureable steps; this way when you've sunk 5 hours into something, you can see the actual progress you've made. If you don't, then you'll just be thinking to yourself, "I've sunk 5 hours into this and made some more additions but I'm nowhere close to being done". Todo lists or task managers should not list the overall task or program alone, but instead include rational subtasks that allow you to reflect upon your progress.

You need to be interested by something. I made me a music player since I wanted something simple with a server/client architecture.

Motivation is a meme. The only way to achieve something is to force yourself, force yourself until you start enjoying it.

What do you mean?

I don't need motivation to program. I do it every single day because I enjoy it.

If you have to force yourself to do it, maybe it's not for you.

Even though some people are pushing the "coding is for everyone" meme, it really isn't for everyone, and that's perfectly fine.

If you like programming, you will find it easy to come up with new projects to work on. If you only want to program because you want to chase the fame and fortune of people like Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates, you're doing it wrong. Program because you like to program.
