This is why I have no problem with the statement I don't like something which describes the subjective experience of someone and is totally fine on the other hand saying blankly whatever sucks or whatever else was never good is just unnecessary it's inflammatory it's rude it's dismissive and it's just not an adult way to speak to one another and this tails in nicely with the point I opened this video with what's the point of crapping on things people love why not focus on what you do like rather than what you don't again that doesn't mean not having an opinion or even not levying direct criticisms.
But I think especially when talking about what is ultimately a fictional universe about magic and spaceships there is a lot we can do to communicate without being inflammatory and ultimately hurtful I'm tired of reading articles but people saying the Star Wars Expanded Universe was no good or it's good that Lucasfilm 'wiped it.'
Now personally I believe the latter and that new movies probably shouldn't be beholden to the old books but just broad claims about the negative quality of something especially when posited as a truism are just not helpful and by the way this extends past the expanded universe I see a lot of Legends fans saying that the new Canon is irredeemable and whatever else I would say the same to you, focus on what you do like.
I do think there are people more qualified to defend the prequels sequels new EU whatever else and I'm doing this video specifically because legends has always been my channel's focus it's a love of mine and I mean this video mostly as a response to some rhetoric I've seen recently especially regarding that picture and mostly to be honest by people comparing legends negatively to the new Canon be secure in what you enjoy making something else seem worse doesn't make what you love any better and I will say personally I have also been guilty of this I try to make an effort to remember that there's somebody else on the other side of the screen whenever I'm posting online and to keep everything sort of subjective and not to crap on other people's interests which is something I've returned to a few times throughout this video. One thing I do want to say though before I leave the expanded universe is one of the reasons Star Wars is still alive today between Return of the Jedi and Episode one there wasn't much out there for Star Wars fans the comics and source books of the […] as well as dark Empire and the Thrawn Trilogy in the early […] are very largely responsible for keeping Star Wars alive and even rejuvenated in the hearts of diehard fans who could have moved on to something else now of course it's not the only reason why the Phantom Menace did extraordinarily well in the box office and of course Star Wars hype would have been hard to extinguish totally but you'd be very foolish to ignore the video games books comics novels audio dramas and whatever else they kept Star Wars a household name and you also can't ignore the fact that the new works are standing on the shoulders of giants, whether that's planets like Coruscant to being incorporated from legends or at least the name or throne being reintroduced to Canon or just the mechanics of the universe and the thousands of planets inventing in legends basically existing as they did then now, just don't ignore don't dismiss it outright especially if you've never read or experienced legends and generally just try to be a positive fan and not only in the Star Wars but I think in life generally.
