Hey guys this is Eckhart slaughter and welcome to another video and today's rant I guess you'd call it respond by something I saw on Twitter the other day and if you're on quote-unquote Star Wars Twitter you probably saw this too specifically it was a picture Mark Hamill posted showing himself in the other original trilogy heroes and the Millennium Falcon with the hashtag #missedopportunities. Now this has already been discussed ad nauseam and I'm in the opinion to let Mark Hamill say what he wants to say but it also spawned some really interesting debate that I felt like talking about specifically I saw lots of comments comparing what mark posted to the old expanded universe and specifically I had one conversation with someone who basically said nothing in Star Wars legends was good I don't want to focus on that specific conversation but it is a trend I've noticed, a really popular one actually just ripping on Star Wars legends and it's something that I want to talk about today because to be honest it's getting a little bit old so fundamentally I believe and this is the point of today's video that you should not go out of your way to crap on something that somebody else enjoys.

Now I want to return to this main thesis later but first I want to talk about the expanded universe and my experience with people who levy insults or who dislike and actively and although this isn't Universal in my experience perhaps the majority or at least a lot of the people ripping on the Star Wars Expanded Universe especially on Twitter or people who are Star Wars fans otherwise don't know a thing about it to complain about the Yuuzhan Vong without knowing anything about them or even how to spell their names, often with dramatic misspellings. they reference Jackson the rabbit who only really appeared in early Marvel Comics which even in legends were only semi canon and were mostly just for fun or Skippy the Jedi droid who was never Canon even and you get the idea and my point is that there are a few talking points that the same sort of anti expanded universe people pair it over and over again which to be honest they've probably gotten from a content creator or an article or something else rather than actually experiencing it firsthand and actually evaluating it for themselves, and by the way I do think this is one of the negatives of Star Wars Wikipedia being so popular but it's an amazing service anyway so I don't want to focus on that, I mean the fact is most of the people who watch my channel probably haven't even read Star Wars legends or have read a couple of books and plates and video games but aren't fully immersed in it and you know what that's totally cool because the information is fun to absorb secondhand and it's just nice listening to someone talk about something they care about. However if you are going to actively hate something or claim that something is bad you should have more than just the stock comments that everyone has already heard secondhand now of course I don't want to diminish people who have read lots of legends and still don't like it because not everyone is just parroting these same lines, let's be honest there was bad in the expanded universe at least subjectively there were certainly stories that I didn't like in the EU was almost wholly light reading nothing in there was gonna fundamentally change the way you think or expose you to some new philosophies for learning, but in my mind that's okay people are allowed to love things just as entertainment that includes Star Wars. Generally superhero movies and much much more even if there are elements of the EU that you don't like another common thing I see is people commonly referring to it by its lowest common denominator the crystal stars or even the simple children's comics or TV shows which I think ignores a lot of stuff that is objectively harder to write off we have for example the Knights of the Old Republic video games and countless other video games which yes were part of the expanded universe. The Thrawn Trilogy, duology and associated stories, outbound flight, the x-wing novels, The Revenge of the Sith novelization and much much more including importantly the source books and early works which defined how Star Wars worked outside of the movies the templates which are still being used to explain how the expanded universe works. almost every single Star Wars novel uses repulsor lifts first appeared in the novelization for a new hope just like every story now we'll use the same conventions regarding hyperspace and mercial dampening combat works have ships work all of which was defined outside of the movies. but blank statements that something is bad not only usually reference the lowest caliber of work but in my opinion also discounts the subjective experiences of those who enjoyed what you're dismissing

This is why I have no problem with the statement I don't like something which describes the subjective experience of someone and is totally fine on the other hand saying blankly whatever sucks or whatever else was never good is just unnecessary it's inflammatory it's rude it's dismissive and it's just not an adult way to speak to one another and this tails in nicely with the point I opened this video with what's the point of crapping on things people love why not focus on what you do like rather than what you don't again that doesn't mean not having an opinion or even not levying direct criticisms.

But I think especially when talking about what is ultimately a fictional universe about magic and spaceships there is a lot we can do to communicate without being inflammatory and ultimately hurtful I'm tired of reading articles but people saying the Star Wars Expanded Universe was no good or it's good that Lucasfilm 'wiped it.'

Now personally I believe the latter and that new movies probably shouldn't be beholden to the old books but just broad claims about the negative quality of something especially when posited as a truism are just not helpful and by the way this extends past the expanded universe I see a lot of Legends fans saying that the new Canon is irredeemable and whatever else I would say the same to you, focus on what you do like.

I do think there are people more qualified to defend the prequels sequels new EU whatever else and I'm doing this video specifically because legends has always been my channel's focus it's a love of mine and I mean this video mostly as a response to some rhetoric I've seen recently especially regarding that picture and mostly to be honest by people comparing legends negatively to the new Canon be secure in what you enjoy making something else seem worse doesn't make what you love any better and I will say personally I have also been guilty of this I try to make an effort to remember that there's somebody else on the other side of the screen whenever I'm posting online and to keep everything sort of subjective and not to crap on other people's interests which is something I've returned to a few times throughout this video. One thing I do want to say though before I leave the expanded universe is one of the reasons Star Wars is still alive today between Return of the Jedi and Episode one there wasn't much out there for Star Wars fans the comics and source books of the […] as well as dark Empire and the Thrawn Trilogy in the early […] are very largely responsible for keeping Star Wars alive and even rejuvenated in the hearts of diehard fans who could have moved on to something else now of course it's not the only reason why the Phantom Menace did extraordinarily well in the box office and of course Star Wars hype would have been hard to extinguish totally but you'd be very foolish to ignore the video games books comics novels audio dramas and whatever else they kept Star Wars a household name and you also can't ignore the fact that the new works are standing on the shoulders of giants, whether that's planets like Coruscant to being incorporated from legends or at least the name or throne being reintroduced to Canon or just the mechanics of the universe and the thousands of planets inventing in legends basically existing as they did then now, just don't ignore don't dismiss it outright especially if you've never read or experienced legends and generally just try to be a positive fan and not only in the Star Wars but I think in life generally.

Anyway guys that is all for my rant today hope you enjoyed hopefully I didn't get too preachy I'm still technically on break but I did just want to take a second to record this anyway until next time guys this has been a craft ladder if you want to see more rants like this you can follow me on Twitter but as always be safe and may the force be with you.

This kind of youtube video format always felt like a bloated template to me. The actual meaningful statements could be condensed into a fucking tweet if the creator would just cut out the apologism and attempts at being overly polite.

That's honestly what I find most annoying about old fans who try to pander to the Disney crowd.

I disagree. people aren't allowed to like things unless they're officially approved for consumption.
