not that guy but the way cashgrab 2 is playing out, it feels like the crates and borked progression was added on more recently, i don't recall it being this bad in the beta.
what really grinds my gears is the retard who decided credits would be given through time played in the match rather than score. it legit doesn't matter how good you do, you still only get 200-300 credits per game.

YouTubed the single-player campaign. Cynicism fully validated.
>Advertised as "a new perspective from an Imperial perspective that rationalizes and humanizes their efforts
>You spend all of 3 missions fighting as Inferno Squad.
>In between two of them, you switch to playing Luke driving the recurrent "there is always a choice" stake into the resolve of a named Imperial character.
>You then defect and join the Rebellion/New Republic because Sheev has to exterminate loyal worlds because mysterious evil raisins.
>More than half the story of this """Imperial""" campaign has you killing Imperials by the hundreds.
>The whole campaign is 4.5 hours long if you don't keep dying.
>The remainder is being jewed out consumers with planned DLC installments
The only good points in the whole thing are pretty graphics and good voice acting (including Billy Dee Williams reprising Lando), but I'm in the market for a video game not a CGI short film with interspersed FPS minigaming. Also tbh the very last mission surprised me by allowing Kylo Ren to be cool.
I expected the "twist" but not for it to be so quick and dominate the whole narrative. It still spaghettis my meatballs.

It sounded like him based on what I remember from The Force Unleashed and Rebels. The voice acting, graphics, and whole "cinematic" package aren't bad. Of course, they can't make up for the campaign brevity, lack of squad management and involvement like in Battlefront II (2005), and bait-and-switch defection scenario.

In BF2 '05, the protagonists of the campaign were the 501st collectively and you selected from the squad classes like in a multiplayer match. With BF2 '17 you have to remain with the specific character for a level. It makes sense for stages where you play a Hero but they didn't plan for something like swapping perspectives between Inferno Squad members throughout a mission. Guess they couldn't since they decided to break them up an hour into the campaign.

Witwer voices Maul in Clone Wars and Rebels.

Wish I knew. All of the Star Wars games with unequivocal Dark Side paths made the most bank. It might be politics among creatives or it could just be lack of effort and consideration that goes with having a contract for 10 straight years protected from competition for a license.

What's more, those 501st were loyal to the Empire all the way to Hoth. And they hated the Rebels for what they did to their brothers. Hoth was their finest hour and greatest revenge.
Do you remember charging up the central peak on Felucia after blundering through blinding mists? Do you remember frantically dodging blaster fire and tank-hunting in the trenches of Kashyykk? Or fighting inch-by-inch through the bloody corridors of Cloud City? Or the desperate defenses on the rails of Kamino's Tipoca City? EA sure doesn't.

The man who created the freemium model for Star Wars: The Old Republic after its subscription-only model failed had an episode of Twitteria about BEAttlefront II's loot box debacle. It seems that EA thought that since cash shopping worked for TOR that all they needed to do was come up with some kind of microtransaction scheme, no matter what it was, and it would stick.

>Let’s talk lootboxes, and how annoying it is to watch AAA publishers fuck them up from the perspective of someone who has to design to them. (1)
>I’ve been working in Free-to-Play games for 4 years, and loot boxes are pretty crucial to that business model working. But it *is* possible to do them ethically, and they are super easy to fuck up. (2)
>The number one mistake that I’ve seen in F2P games is devs who don’t understand that NOT SPENDING IS NORMAL PLAY. Most of your customers will NEVER give you a dime. (3)
>The Zynga Facebook games that used to spam your feed were a success if they had a conversion rate of 2%. That’s right – a successful business model if 98% of your population never drops a dime. (4)
What this means, though is that the non-spendy version of the game is the NORM. The game that you see as a non-spender is what 90%+ of your customers will see. (6)
>Dungeon Boss on mobile failed because what those people saw was a game where spending was absolutely mandatory. That view of the game killed the game. (7)
>Because that 90%+ of the population is your game’s virality (also known as “word of mouth”). If your free players (or in the case of Battlefront, box spenders) have a negative reax it can kill word of mouth, tank reviews, etc. (8)
>Some ppl think that game devs don’t care about keeping that 90%+, but that’s not true. Most of these games NEED those non-spendy players because they’re multiplayer games. (9)
>In MMOs, you need ppl so that dungeon queues will fire. In PvP games, you need enough people to make a match – and matchmake them with appropriate enemies. (10)
>This is much more true in AAA games where the PvP is synchronous than in mobile games where the PvP is against offline opponents frequently (see the core Clash of Clans game) (11)
>So what Battlefront got wrong was to put content that people consider core behind a hugely long grind path. They missed that this would be seen as the ‘normal’ game. (12)
>And one more thing: once you go into microtransactions, players start suspecting they are your motives for everything. (13)
>So even in the scenario was a game designer that (for example) accidentally put an unlock behind an 80 hour grind because he fat fingered it, or because he just likes grinds or hard games, players will assume the company is making a money grab. (14)
That’s because in a lot of cases, the players are correct. Bringing >microtransactions into things erases the benefit of the doubt. (15)
I still am a huge proponent of Free to Play because I’m a big hippy. I *like* the idea that 98% of my population can play for free. (16)
>And a lot of research has been done to find that most heavy spenders (‘whales’) are people who like spending and don’t feel manipulated into it. Think high-powered lawyers with too much spare cash lying around. (17)
>I’m pretty fine with those guys paying a lot of money so that a whole bunch of kids w/o money or credit cards can play my games for free. (18)
>In talks in the past, I’ve compared it to the old Patron system in Renaissance times, where kings and rich dudes would subsidize art so everyone could enjoy it. (19)
>But still, good MTX design is an art. It requires designers to be equal partners with Product Managers to come up with something that is perceived as fair and is celebrated. (20)
>People like @JimSterling would disagree, but the difference between Overwatch & Battlefront is stark. People CELEBRATE new skins being added to the former. (21)
>When a new Magic or Hearthstone set comes out, people CELEBRATE the opportunity to spend more. Same for a new FIFA season. (22)
>This is important. MTX will fail if it *doesn’t feel good to spend*. It will fail if it creates a poisonous environment around the game instead of excitement. (23)
>Anyway, I need to hit the road to a convention, but these thoughts have been rattling around my brain for a few days now. (fin)
>Fuck, I said “Dungeon Boss failed” above. I meant Dungeon Keeper. Dungeon Boss is my game, and we did pretty good actually.

Microtransactions are profitable and work. Even after Reddit le downboated the damage control to hell, EA's stock and profit margins rose. This business model will continue to proliferate as long as it pays dividends, which it does for both AAA titles and the indie scene.
I don't think there's any going back. Even if there's another market crash, the successors will base their plans on what the data shows is most profitable.

You can do microtransactions or piecemeal development through DLC schedules intelligently, which is why newcomers are starting to pick up the slack in fighting games that Capcom, Konami, etc. aren't doing so well satisfying.
EA of course is one of those too big to fail abominations that doesn't need to learn how to do them tolerably because they just buy up popular IPs and bleed 'em out.

The Minster of Justice says the mix of gaming and gambling is "dangerous."
Last week, Belgium's Gaming Commission announced that it had launched an investigation into whether the loot boxes available for purchase in games like Overwatch and Star Wars Battlefront 2 constitute a form of gambling. Today, VTM News reported that the ruling is in, and the answer is yes.
The Google translation is a little sloppy, as usual, but the message is clear enough. "The mixing of money and addiction is gambling," the Gaming Commission declared. Belgium's Minister of Justice Koen Geens also weighed in, saying, "Mixing gambling and gaming, especially at a young age, is dangerous for the mental health of the child."

There were mods which repurposed some of the AI code to make the commands be more useful. Such as on PC in the campaign when you have the desired object you'll see AI players form up and follow you in space or land, that code was rewritten to be called for that scenario. Mods were neat in the classic Battlefront 1/2 since each map was essentially a giant script using "resources" which they themselves were scripts calling on engine functions.

It truly shows how memorable a story can be with great writing, all is needed is a narrator and some footage. I remember playing the demo I got from an Xbox magazine, it was just the Utapau level with a space battle and you could go on Xbox-live with. Just that was enough to hype for release. You knew what you were going to get, the classes made sense and they each had a purpose. The gameplay was non-linear in that any control point could fall at any moment if your enemy desired to flank.

It didn't need to be a profound and layered story for me. I remember BFII fondly because it fulfilled a personal niche in my fan passions by letting me follow an Imperial perspective from the very start to the very finish in something that wasn't an RTS game. The campaign includes the founding of Vader's Fist through to the Battle of Hoth. Most other Star Wars games with Dark Side or villain options railroad the player in the protagonist faction until two minutes to midnight.
It's the single greatest issue I have with BEAttlefront II. Not the lootboxes, the balance, the level design, or any object points about its quality as a game. The campaign mode was billed and shilled from top to bottom as something that tried to rationalize and humanize the Empire's heroes. It didn't just fail to do that with a defection event less than two hours in, it proved that those teasers and interviews were outright lies. As far as I'm concerned, false advertisement. Not a twist, but a bait and switch.
Naturally I expected that nobody in charge right now would stand for a consistently Imperial choice in a big budget project and YouTubed everything instead of parting with my shekels. Somehow, though, it still pisses me off. I guess expecting that somebody is going to pull a fast one doesn't detract from the disgust that they would try it in the first place.

From the comments, a possible end:
>Were we prepared for what stood on the doorstep of the Rebellion? Of course not. Were we informed of our impending doom upon the horizon? Not a chance. It seemed the age of the Empire was growing weary and withered under its new orders. The survivors of the 501st were earning more wrinkles than medals these days and at the hand of Vader, we were growing more fearful than ever before. Our victory on Hoth was just a mere celebration to what lay before us as we touched down on the unforgiven forests of Endor. As we waded through the blood soaked rivers of the rebellion, our blasters hanging loosely in our hand, we fired upon the forces across the water, each round a fallen brother. Waves after waves of Rebellion troopers climbing through the forest. With nothing to combat them, we sat and waited for death to pick us off the ground.
>Thankfully, he never had the chance to, yet. Solo dead, Leia slain and Luke tortured, the rebellion would be soon to follow. It seemed that the Empire, after struggling efforts and endless exposures of merciless hostility was finally granted the satisfaction it deserved. No one knows of the fate of the rebellion, some say it's been starved and quelled, others say it's already nurturing a new generation of active extremist scum, but honestly, I'm just happy I had the chance to fight for a justified cause. The clone within me is slowly dying, and it won't be long until the rest of me goes with him. Hell, I'm getting too feeble and weak to pick up a blaster, never mind stepping forward on to the front lines. I often wonder what will be the future of the Empire, will it be crushed? Will it continue? Who knows. Yet, as I lookout across a new wave of Imperial Troopers, each face more determined than the last, I can be certain that our new brothers will carry on where we left off, as newly constructed troopers of the 501st and as fresh faces of imperial determination. But more importantly than any of that, as family of our fallen. This, is how the rebellion should have ended.

They'll be releasing their 2.2 update by the end of the month, final testing is ongoing right now. So get your foot in the door while you can.
AHA!
We are getting the Empire of that mustachioed maverick as a playable faction in 2.2. Counting him, we have
>The New Republic
>The Imperial Remnant (arguably the most significant in-game faction thanks to the Era System)
>The Pentastar Alignment of Powers
>Warlord Zsinj's Empire
>The Eriadu Authority
>The Greater Maldrood
>The Duskhan League (doesn't come out of isolation until later, of course)
>and finally The Empire of the Hand for some truly alien opponents
Eight playable factions in total, each with their own unique unit lists and playstyles. How do you like that?
Did I mention that he's also done a Sins of a Solar Empire version, and that he's working on a Fall of the Republic mod? Kriff yes we have somethings to look forward to.

We haaaave an update, and a roadmap to the future.
Things to expect:
Imperial Civil War 2.3 - Q4 2018
Primary Goals:

>Unfortunately, while most of the testing process has been going very smoothly and we've made a lot of headway, some people have started to report save crashes in the beta, so in the interest of making sure the mod is as stable as possible, we have decided to move back release by two weeks to April 12th in order to try to look into it more. We will continue running the beta off of our forums for the time being, so those who do want to help test can do so there.
>We're sorry for the delay, but we want to make sure once the release happens, it's as good and smooth as we can make it.
Kark. Oh well, I've seen much worse delays.

I'm staring at your flag right now. How do you play those blue bastards? Sure their ships can practically melt hardpoints and laugh off tons of individual hits with their shields… but they're made of paper once those go down. I had the humbling experience of watching a bunch of dreadnoughts and light cruisers tear Stent to pieces in moments.

tl;dr I just spam Ascendancy-class star destroyers and hyperspace them all around the enemy fleet with the help of a pathfinder ship. Individually the ships are weak so I counter that by spreading around as many as the pop cap allows to reduce the enemy's ability to focus them down. It almost feels unfair, but then again the remnant do have much bigger ships and several times the planets so I don't feel that bad.
I don't know if there's a lore reason to back this up but Empire of the Hand are all about numbers.

Got an answer back:
>EtoH is pretty strong
>I feel like their fleets are the best against almost everything
>It's just how you use your ships
>Syndics and phalanx's are your shields
>Then have have some ascendancies and peltasts in the back to give some support with fighters and long range firepower
>Your ships Are glass cannons
>EotH also gets the most out of the station turning ability
>You can optimize your Visvia shots that way

I still remember seeing the trailer for Empire at War on the 2003 Clone Wars DVDs. What is it about those old game trailers that does a better job of actually selling the product than anything companies have put out these days?

I had the misfortune of playing about 10 hours of this game over the past weekend.
Even after a fucking year of development this game is one-hundred-percent garbage. Absolute shit. The P2W aspects are largely removed but it doesn't even matter because the gameplay is so fucking shallow and repetitive. The TTK is so short that in most cases who wins a firefight relies entirely on who gets the first shot in. The balance is completely off. Character progression gives higher level players flat stat bonuses that set them above new players. Some star cards and abilities are explicitly better than others and some of them are overpowered to the point where you feel bad using them.
In many ways it feels worse than the last shitty Battlefront that EA put out, which is really fucking saying something. There is virtually nothing redeeming about this game.
People just want a Star Wars version of Battlefield - solid gunplay, fun vehicles, and huge combined arms maps that faithfully recreate the Star Wars setting - but that apparently is beyond the grasp of EA/DICE. Instead what they deliver is a visually appealing but completely soulless 70GB monstrosity with worse gameplay than a F2P Korean shooter from 2003. It plays and feels like a mobile game that somebody put in a PC game's skin.
Oh, I almost forgot - there's also the singleplayer campaign. EA/DICE, in their infinite wisdom, looked at their mostly-white-male customer demographic and decided that what the players REALLY want is to play as a distractingly ugly mystery-meat minority woman, whose dialogue and character development are frustratingly simplistic and entirely uncompelling. What's worse, they advertised the campaign as allowing players to experience the struggle between the Rebellion and the Empire from the Imperial perspective - which turns out to be a fucking lie because you switch sides about four missions in (proving once again that blacks, women, and especially black women are chronically disloyal and cannot be trusted). Racial concerns aside, the plot of the campaign is stupid beyond words and whoever wrote it should be fired. It makes no sense, feels rushed and is disappointing.
In closing, fuck EA and fuck DICE. They haven't made a good game in almost a decade and I expect all subsequent games from them to be even worse.

That campaign is one of the more insulting things that came out dealing with the Galactic Empire…is what I would say when nu-Wars is shit across the board. Even so, Operation Cinder made no fucking sense at every point in the decision-making process.
