Were they autistic?

Thought that scene predicted the future to be honest.

Tell me how to properly work an antique phone and then you can make fun of Mr. Scott.

What's so difficult about it? you just put your finger in the proper digit and rotate to select it, until you have composed the number

You crank it, then tell the operator who you want to call.

Stop it with this /b/ / /tv/ shitposting. Stop ruining other boards like you have /tv/ and are trying to do with /v/ and now /strek/.

I think it's more so they've grown up with computers having some sort of human element.

Bare in mind back then computer prompts would look like this.

And bare in mind Scotty's an engineer so complicated machines are his strong suit it's more so it's just very alien to him to interact with a computer that doesn't at least answer his questions.

He also probably doesn't have the history of computers memorized so he probably thought during the 20th century they already had talking computers. Bare in mind he lives a few hundred years in the future.

Who are you talking to?

One thing that DOES bother me about that scene, and the other one in Voyager, is that both Scotty and B'ellana can touch-type at 60 words a minute.

Didn't they also have to deal with non-talking computers during TOS?

>teleports behind you

Nice stuff, kiddo, but here're a few tricks you may not have learned from the movies. Hard mode (Nothing personnel):

Scenario 1. You're inside of a business phone network and need to dial out—on long distance.

Scenario 2. You're in a hotel and need to place a long-distance call but without incurring the hotel's long-distance tolls.

We got a phone phreak in the house? I never heard about that scene until it was too late, but I would have been in there if I could have.

Same here, I have the pdf, those analog hijinks sound interesting. Meant to specify the challenge involves more conventional means.

>Scenario 1. You're inside of a business phone network and need to dial out—on long distance.

Dial 9 to get an outside line, then dial 1 then the area code, then the number.

>Scenario 2. You're in a hotel and need to place a long-distance call but without incurring the hotel's long-distance tolls.

There are two non phreak options.

1. Dial 9 to get an outside line. Then dial the 1-800 number for the phone card you bought before leaving home and follow the prompts to place your call.

2. Dial 9 to get an outside line. Dial 0 to speak to an operator and place a collect call.

Collect calls were cool. We used to work out fake names as code to use payphones for free. So if your friend needed a ride they'd tell the operator their name was Harold Thompson. So then when you friend gets a call from the operator and she says,"This is an operator from MCI. You have a collect call from Harold Thompson, do you accept the charges?" He just says, "no, screw that asshole," and hops in his car to pick you up.

Also, both of the above could be circumvented with either a blue box or a well placed gold box. A well placed gold box can solve just about any phone problem.

Ok I totally screwed up who was who in that collect call scenario. I got interrupted halfway through. Hopefully everyone still gets the point.

I'm surprised by his knowledge of mid 1980s software, but then again he could sit down at a Klingon engineering control panel and start punching away too.

>Were they autistic?

I believe I know one character we should all consider a canon autist: Dr. Richard Daystrom.

>brilliant

>arrogant

>doesn't play well with others

>only understood and appreciated by Spock

>considers his invention to be his child

>watched helplessly as Captain Chad Thundercock raped his life's work over something as petty and inconsequential as the lives of human beings

Goldbox is almost cheating.

Motels are easy just unscrew the phone cable receptacle from the wall. Usually the neighboring rooms wires can be snagged with bare fingers and you can place your call using the other line.
