how the fuck do stardates work?

one time we've got something like 4000, other times we've jumped over 5000 even though it's only been like 10 years at most

I think the TNG-DS9-VOY era tried to get something coherent going, but with the reboot and the games, it seems like its just a clusterfuck.

I read somewhere that for TNG, the second digit in their stardates was the season number, but that doesn't explain the rest.

I thought it was based off Vulcan years or some shit like that?

Nu-Trek coordinate system, how the fuck is "23-17-46-11" detailed enough to lead anyone anywhere? Jesus christ. They don't even try.

From Memory Alpha

<instructions to writers

We invented "Stardate" to avoid continually mentioning Star Trek's century (actually, about two hundred years from now), and getting into arguments about whether this or that would have developed by then. Pick any combination of four numbers plus a percentage point, use it as your story's stardate. For example, 1313.5 is twelve o'clock noon of one day and 1314.5 would be noon of the next day. Each percentage point (sic) is roughly equivalent to one-tenth of one day. The progression of stardates in your script should remain constant but don't worry about whether or not there is a progression from other scripts. Stardates are a mathematical formula which varies depending on location in the galaxy, velocity of travel, and other factors, can vary widely from episode to episode.

That being pastaed, 4000 is 24th century and 5000 is 25th. That happens roughly 3 years into DS9.

I don't think they expected a huge fan base of rabid artists to rise up and start analyzing every frame of the show individually and replay audio tracks on a loop looking for patterns. If they had, there might have been consistency, but they didn't so it did not matter.

Honestly, though, how could they have hoped to predict it? It's not like a lot of that was happening with Dragnet or Maverick.

>They don't even try.

There was an episode of DS9 where O'Brien or Bashir calls out 3D coordinates for an incoming attack. He says something like 380° starboard or something instead of 20°, basically having the runabout turn 360° and walk away.

By the way, you can still catch summerfags with that old chestnut. Caught two of them in June with it.

They should have learned their lesson early on in TNG. Star Trek autists are some devoted losers.

That's why ENT>all

I liked them using actual Earth years, but I must admit, something seemed a little jarring every time Archer said "Captain's log, January 11th."
