I held on watching this for the longest time thinking it would simply be inferior to TOS, but I think it surpassed it in some ways. I assume it's been talked about on this board before, but I felt like bringing it up, it shows how hard STD has failed when a kickstarter does a better job than them.
The writing is on par with TOS, but without any of its lows, STC manages to keep a certain level of quality with its writing, never really sinking to the abysmal lows of episodes like "The Alternative Factor" in the original.
The casting choices are decent, I was suprised they got Scotty's son to play the role of Scotty, he actually nails the role, likely because of him being the son of the original. The guy playing Kirk actually grows into the character overtime, same could be said for McCoy's actor. With Spock, I'd say it's the weakest link, but that's only because it's a high bar to reach.
The sets and so on are pretty much on point, I was suprised they didn't just use the original sets, but after all these years since TOS, it'd be unreasonable to think they'd still be usable.

It may be the greatest thing since sliced bacon, but I won't watch anything tied to Vic Mignogna. Even if the whole lawsuit thing has made me respect him more, it's not enough to make me willing to partake in his work.

Only thing I could find is that Vic has apparently been accused of sexual harassment. The lawsuit refers to him taking legal action against Funimation and others for defamation.
Personally I think 216d37 is being a butthurt tumblrite and assuming he's guilty despite the fact that the suit hasn't even commenced yet, much less ruled in favor of him or Funimation, so ignore them

Oh no. You've got it totally backwards. As a weeb, I've known about Vic Mignogna for years. He's a prominent Funimation voice actor, most well known for playing Tamaki in Ouran High School Hosts Club. He's also a massive douchebag with an even more massive ego. I won't go into the specifics, but I've experienced his douchebaggery personally, as well as some of my friends.
Despite how much I hate him, I hate PC culture more. I think he is getting fucked over by Funimation and the cunts who work there, and actually support him in his lawsuit. I hope he is victorious.

>english-language anime voice actors
without a doubt the least talented, incestuous fanboys club I have ever seen, outside of video games journalism.
how, with the increasing mainstreaming of anime in north america, have these voice "actors" not been displaced and replaced with actual trained, talented actors from the mainline cartoon industry?

>without a doubt the least talented, incestuous fanboys club I have ever seen, outside of video games journalism.
I couldn't agree more. I think a large part of it is the dubbing companies being lazy and/or too risk averse. Why hire somebody who might not do a good job, when they could just hire the people that have done a "good" job over 9000 times already.
>how, with the increasing mainstreaming of anime in north america, have these voice "actors" not been displaced and replaced with actual trained, talented actors from the mainline cartoon industry?
I'd like to see more open auditions and talented nobodies getting a chance. I'm tired of being able to instantly recognize the same voice actors, even when they work under pseudonyms. I forgot what I was watching a few years ago I think it was Knights of Sidonia, when I totally picked out Tiffany Grant's voice. When I googled the name in the credits, the only credit to that name was that anime. I'm sure she was just Grant doing non-union work under a pseudonym. I do have a bit of a gift for recognizing voices, though. I remember when I first heard the Geico commercials with Charlie Schlatter, and said to the person in the car with me, "It's good to know Charlie Schlatter is getting work." They had no idea what I was even talking about. I know him as the guy who replaced Scott Baio on Diagnosis Murder. I also heard him do voiceovers for some cable show called, Americas's Funniest Pets And People.

Did he refuse to sign one of your gay drawings? Is this why you're upset?

I've also met him a few times in real life in greenrooms and parties. He totally radiates an aura of douchness even if he doesn't actually do anything that overtly makes him a complete asshole. But I'm fairly sure he's not an actual sex offender or any of the shit he's been accused of.

Yes! How did you guess? It was a drawing I had commissioned from an artist in artists' alley. It's me sucking Tamaki's dick. I'm giving him a real sloppy slobbery one. There's saliva and pre-cum everywhere. Meanwhile, Honey-sempai is licking my asshole while crying and jerking his little uncircumsized cock off with one hand and fingering Tamaki's asshole with the other. In the background Haruhi is wearing a huuuge strap-on and holding a whip, asking when she's going to get her turn to fuck my "naughty asshole." It cost me two grand to get the commission done in time for the autograph session.
When It was my turn to get an autograph from Vic, I handed it to him and asked him to make it out to "The boy with the naughty asshole." He didn't say anything for a few seconds. He just kind of sat there and stared at it. His brow started to furl, and he handed it back to me saying, "I'm sorry sir, but I can't sign this."
"Why not?" I asked, "I had this commissioned especially for today, just for you to sign. Tamaki is quite possibly my favorite anime character of all time, and he's also a damn sexy young man. Is this because I put Honey in the picture too? He's not meant to steal Tamaki's glory or anything."
"Sir," he replied, "I just saw you sitting in the front row of the Q&A earlier, and you heard me mention my Christian faith. I just can't sign something so sexual, much less something homosexual, much much less something that's just so gross and deviant. If you have something else for me to sign that isn't so offensive I'll sign it, but I can't sign this."
"What the fuck?" I said, full of righteous indignation, "You can't do this to me! I paid over two thousand dollars for this. Look at the detail on the pre-cum!. You have to sign it, IT'S YOUR JOB! Don't be such a homophobe. WE ARE THE NEXT STEP IN HUMAN EVOLUTION. FUCK YOU AND YOUR PRIMITIVE NOTIONS OF RELIGION AND MORALITY. I'M GOING TO POST ABOUT THIS ON REDDIT! YOU'LL RUE THE FUCKING DAY YOU MESSED WITH ME VINCENT"
Before I knew it, a couple of fascist goons from the convention center bent my arm and pushed me outside. They cut off of my wristband and told me I was banned from the convention center for five years. I knew they weren't serious because they never even asked my name. I went back the next year and when I saw them I made strong eye contact and they didn't do shit.
Anyway. That's why Vic Mignogna is a total douchebag piece of shit.

There's a revolving door of /leftypol/ and redditor retards who wander their way into here and make stupid posts before getting scared away by the cardassianposting. It's an unfortunate consequence of normies adopting the "star trek is socialist utopia" meme.

So I watched this shit, and I like Vic, but damn that dude needs to learn how to speak in a lower register. I thought he'd at least try to mimic the way Captain Kirk talks but he still sounds like a massive homo, I'm sorry to say. Anyone have any idea why he's like this?
>how, with the increasing mainstreaming of anime in north america, have these voice "actors" not been displaced and replaced with actual trained, talented actors from the mainline cartoon industry?
Because dubbing Anime is made on a massive budget. These people who run these companies realize that all they have to do is hire voice actors. That's it. They're penny pinchers. So the logical follow through is that they don't hire better actors who are more expensive.

I really confused. What makes me come off as a tumblrite? Hating Vic? Most people that aren't teenage girls hate Vic. He gets at least one proposal from a young girl at every con. Does defending him despite not liking him make me a tumblrite? He's a prideful obnoxious douchebag, but he's not guilty of any kind of sexual harassment. It's not his style.
Either way, I'm definitely not from /leftypol/ nor reddit. I've been here since /strek/ won the first attention hungry games, and am actually one of the more active cardassianposters.
