I recently saw a big pile of Star Trek novels looking depressed and alone in the corner of a charity shop, probably the former belongings of some Boomer nerd who's dead now, and it got me wondering, are any of these things actually worth reading?

Unless it's the tech manuals, no. Supposedly they are mostly trash.

Yeah, that's what I expected. Even Doctor Who novels have a dedicated following, but no one mentions these things ever,

If they aren't too expensive, the Marshak and Culbrath ones are hilariously horrible. Shatner's bio is also worth a read.

People say the Alan Dean Foster stuff is good, but I didn't care for it.

Weirdly, I've found most of the people who were really into Star Trek books were women, but that's just anecdotal data.

I used to read trek novels when I was like 14, but it was TNG era mostly.

I enjoyed them for the most part, for what it's worth.

Funfact: A Stich In Time is the only Star Trek novel not written with a ghost writer.

Partly it’s because there’s no point. All ST novels and comic books are not canon, so I think it makes it hard to invest in a book when there isn’t even a guarantee what was mentioned in it will matter in the next one you read.

As opposed to SW back when Lucas was in charge where everything was considered canon when you wish half of it wasn't.

I don't think it matters if the material is good. The Red Dwarf novels aren't canon, but they're better than the show in a lot of ways.
