the scene where we see a holodeck message from Wesley's father Jack and the one where Q ages up Wes tells you everything you need to know (albeit comically over-the-top with the casting of this lunky Chad-caricature for adult Wes). Wes/Wil became a lightning rod for instinctual repulsion of grown men with soy syndrome since he clearly appears to have childhood-sex-abuse-survivor-tier suspended adolescence combined with a certain effeminate and unbecoming neurotic bitchiness and emotional instability with low-grade depression.
The "Shut Up Wesley" contingent aren't wrong, per se, and it's a valid meme, but he (both the character and the actor) were supposed to grow out of it to something like pic related. An older Wes would have transmuted his early boyishness into retaining a young man's zeal and vigor throughout his life, thus transforming what was early on a source of bullying into an asset later in life. Men are supposed to age like wine and Wil Weaton fucked it up because he hasn't. He's a middle-aged soyboy.
In retrospect, Wes should have left with his mom after Season 1 but not come back in Season 3, instead being accepted to the Academy early. Then, they bring the character back in Season 6 or 7 as a full Ensign, with a new actor who doesn't look and act like a faggot - and who will become a new central character for a future Trek series.
