Seems like Cardassians would've been the best ally. They're the only non-Federation that comes to mind where you have an actually diverse society in terms of personalities and occupations, rather than just a bunch of single-motive autists. You know, sometimes being a ST fan is really confusing for me. It always feels like I'm praising the writers for the world Roddenberry put together and they fleshed out, then out of the other side of my mouth I'm cursing Roddenberry as the socialist idiot that he is, as well as Behr and Berman for following in his footsteps.

I think that's a perfectly valid stance to take. Roddenberry did create an interesting universe, albeit one that tends towards being very two dimensional, which a lot of people like because it's very easy to grasp, but the addition of depth, of sedition and malcontent that came in DS9, depth of the characters and their ability to hold personal ideals over their defining racial traits that tended to make the prior series flat at times is absolutely something to be applauded.
