First I heard of gor was at a sl club where 50% of the answers to a trivial pursuit game were "goran". Everyone there saw it as a big joke. I just thought it was funny because it sounded like "korean".
After looking it up; finding out that the lifestyle was, looking at some forums and reading some choice excerpts from one of Norman's novels, it didn't seem all that bad. It's not something I'd ever get into, even in the RP sense. I'm down for a little bit of slave rp but I don't want to have them cling onto me afterwards, offering their hair as a leash and saying that they belong to me forevermore. Assuming they can articulate that wish, as English doesn't appear to be the first language.
I do appreciate the abundance of goran furniture though. Having such a community makes finding rustic, wooden tables and such a lot easier.

This is pretty much the only benefit of Gor existing, yeah.
Every Gorean I've met has been fucking terrible, and fundamentally broken in some way, and the ones who seem okay are even worse in the end because it just means they've learned how to lie better. The source material is dreck, the philosophy it inspires is aggressively stupid, Gorean SL sims are primmy shitholes with a design sense only slightly better than all the edgy BDSM churches covered in pentagrams, and the community is a bunch of impotent betamaxes (much like Norman himself) engaged in desperate dick-waving contests for which they're underequipped, or braindead Germans and various other Eastern Eurotrash playing the submissive equivalent of a wet dishrag, assuming you can even discern that much from the wordbarf that they miscall writing.
The whole thing can go die in the dumpster fire it already is, but until then, I'll at least enjoy fucking non-Goreans (read: people who can ERP worth half a damn) on their furniture. It's probably the best action it's ever gotten, and that's not even bragging, because it's not a particularly high hurdle to clear.

I used to do light gorean RP in chatrooms back in the 90s, but I’d never really checked it out in second life (despite having played SL on and off more or less since it started). I like a lot of the trappings of it, collars, leashes, serving drinks, dressing up, dancing and so on. I love bdsm, but I wasn’t having much luck dealing with the limp wristed daddy doms that infest the rest of second life. I can’t stand the one on one d&s scene either. I want to be able to show off how great my master is and take part in stupid events.
I went in knowing I’d have to be open minded, willing to learn and perhaps willing to drop my roleplay expectations while I get back into it, but when I was met with a wave of “STOP SLUT! U FW? U FW?” I knew it probably wasn’t going to work out. I’m by no means doctoral or an elitist with English, but when the height of literacy is ‘/me smiles’, there’s a problem.
I met one free woman who could actually speak English, and she was helpful enough, though warned me ooc that a bunch of the masters were planning on just capturing me through some game mechanics on the sim. As fun a thing that may have been to play, I’d already seen their mastery of English and winky faces. You can bet they all had that one Hamlet quote on their profiles too! Truly intellectual giants.
Another time I spoke to a slave who was supposedly a guide for new players. She couldn’t answer a single question. Not even super simple ‘what is you’re opinion on X?’. I got dumped on a master the first chance she got. Sadly he was pretty useless too, but at least he was kind enough to show me around the sim, and got into a conversation with another master about how neither of them knew what Gor was. I wasn’t shocked by that point.
I spoke to an old master of mine afterwards, and he confirmed that my experience wasn’t unusual. He also warned me that unless I was willing to get into the dumpster fire that is a ‘second and first life daddy-daughter relationship’, I’d probably not get picked up by a master in the first place.
I just want to wear the leashes, dance and serve drinks with a bit of well written description on the side in a small community. Fuck SL goreons for consistently crushing my dreams.

The meter itself needs some SERIOUS modern updates, but otherwise isn't the worst meter out there. That'd be CCS
The biggest problem with Gor is the theme itself. Having TRIED (a few times) to RP in some Gor sims in the past, I simply cannot fathom what is so fun or interesting about the lore and theme. Basically it's watered-down pre-medieval fantasy with a sci-fi element tossed in there somewhere but with NONE of the interesting bits from fantasy or sci fi. Either be a meathead warrior or a sex slave. These are literally your options. There's little to no in-between or alternatives. It ALWAYS comes down to being a meathead warrior or a sex slave. ALWAYS. That's not fun.
Given what I've already said in the first comment about the meter, and then how bad the lore/theme of Gor is, I find the Gorean Meter to be wasted potential. Personally I feel as though it should have started and maintained itself as a generic fantasy meter that allows people to move around various fantasy sims with the same meter, thereby streamlining it far more than it currently is AND allowing other fantasy sims to NOT have to make their own meters. Just my opinion.

The fufag pitched a fit about the whole thing and DEMANDED furries be allowed as furries in a DnD themed sim that doesn't allow for animal avatars. End result: The furry was banned and the staff gave the population a blank check to tell furries to fuck off without incurring any penalties from the RP staff.
