My rule of thumb for taking any rp in SL serious is to just avoid mandatory huds.

I'm pretty sure every time a hud was introduced into a community I was already a part of, it became immediately divisive. There's always one person who uses it as a tool to force everyone into the position he wants them to be in, and now suddenly he's the star of the story or something.

Heres what I find funny. The fox is obviously wearing full space armor, but look at that tail. Now, unless that tail is fake and is just attached to the suit, then I'd be fine with it. Otherwise, that tail is a compromise in the suit and would make the entire suit pointless for space travel and environments. Only way to appease my autism in that fact is to have the tail "cased" or something, otherwise it's a furry breaking the immersion.

Their main problem is that they've started what are basically mini-faction groups for each of the playable races. The leaders of these groups get staff positions.

There's a lovely little sim i'm getting into pretty lately(or at least, trying to), called mesa 5. it's a really weird sci-fi sim and the place is oozing with lots of care and detail. It makes my computer cry tears when I first load in, but hey. whatever. They're pretty realistic, heavy sci-fi, though I cannot say much about the RP there since i'm only just trying to get started lately. I do know that they don't allow giant floaty green robots, and they have some weird in-lore reason as to why you could be a furry, a gremlin, or a damn shark. hint, it's a cop-out. "A sub species of a sub species", etc etc. I'm not much of a fan of it. the sim is really nice though, and could do with more population.

Yes Mesa5 is nice. Furries are sadly allowed, likely for the reason that any RP sim is dead if you don't allow ugly cartoon dog men.

Not that it really helps, Mesa5 is for the most part dead when it comes to RP, but at least Ifrit is still building and adding stuff so it is nice to explore and take screenshots.

Make it turn-based and completely based on D&D 3.5 or 5th. If you're really good at scripting add "party" support for more than 1on1 combat.

Roleplay is fine with me as long as it's not with furries.

I consider myself a very tolerant person in general but there is something about furries that just rubs me the wrong way.

It's usually because they're some DeviantArt-level Mary Sue special snowflake character, and those are no fun to play with regardless of whether they're furry or human or robot or otherwise. It's just a billion times more common with furries in my experience, for whatever reason. Has anyone tried any incest roleplay? I'm really interested to hear about your experiences. I wouldn't call it a fetish of mine but looking at it from a pragmatic pov it would make a lot of sense if you're a fan of any sexual roleplay at all.

- you get a converging point to gather around (usually a house) with the same people which allows you to chat & build a relationship outside of just sex

- you roleplay a fixed character in a relatively small scene so everyone gets to know everyone in depth, likes dislikes etc

- you have a built-in support group, someone to relax or explore with, someone you can instantly talk to as soon as you fire up SL

- you can still do other things and listen to others experience of doing other things, a sort of group stimulation to find new interests

the major downside would obviously be running into people that you don't click with or risk getting emotionally invested for a long period of time then have someone drop out and never come back which is a pretty common occurrence in SL

Semi-generic Medi Fantasy sim I play at is called Ashbourne.

Very new and is the latest bastard child of a long line of BDI, COV, EOR etc. sims who seem to keep getting shit tier admins.

I like the admins in this one though, and if you don't mind cliche Med fantasy then I would recommend it.

I wish I could find a fur-friendly RP sim that is not completely dead and not full of boobfoxes.

Just started playing in a sim called Revenland myself, seems cool.

Lots of old Mystara players on the admin team, setting feels a lot like it too. Big city with only humans in it, underground with whatever, bandit groups. You can start your own group too, and I'm trying to pull one together with my own friends.

It's small right now, but it's growing pretty nicely.

They allow believable furries too, so people are playing kobolds and shit. Prettygud.

There's been dozens of furry/anime RP sims but they always seem to go under due to lack of interest in the community.

That's always surprised me. Seeing as how furries are always looking for RP sims and the non-furry RP sims didn't much care for furries and anime avs showing up and shoving theme out the window. Break City and Brave Battlers were really nice sims but almost always empty before they closed. Milk & Cream is still around and always welcomed furry avs, but it's more of a hangout with some fantasy areas these days.

Someone in the /d/ group was making a furry fantasy RP sim with an underground sex dungeon. I don't know if it's open to the public yet.

Most new sims rely on having a big enough group of friends to hang out at the sim for it to even build interest in the first place, but sadly, any new clubs or RP sims you do find tend to be abandoned quickly as there isn't enough sustainable interest. When most randoms go to a sim, the people they see there are the basis for their opinions, if there's only 1/2 people about, said people will usually deem it as dead and not give it a second glance.

I've yet to find any good RP sims that are primarily anime oriented (key word being good, don't bring up HH) and any I do stumble across have an absolutely abysmal traffic score and nobody populating the place for the good part of a day.

Brave Battlers seemed to ride on the BARE fad. It had a fighting game theme to it and used BARE instead of a typical RP sim combat HUD. Yeah, SL's engine and LSL just isn't good for any kind of action game, it's always gonna be crippled. Turnbased games allow you to have the most shitty framerates and sim performance and the game would still be playable, because it doesn't rely on timing.

I wonder, if you could make the game be processed completely off-world on your own server, and just let the HUD be a command input (think Final Fantasy 6/7's battle menu) and have it play animations, if it would allow having large parties of at least 4. I know Jas limited GoT to only have 2 player coop mostly because he's already straining the limits of LSL.

Regarding the shitty framerates, that has less to do with a bad rendering engine, and everything to do with the fact that nobody optimizes the content they make for SL.

If you were able to yank all the content from an SL sim and put it in the best game engine out there, you'd probably actually get worse framerates than you see in SL.

Yes and no. Everything is cached (as we know) and the viewer juggles with fetching textures from the HDD as everything on your screen is streamed.

(Including the loading time for each texture. Having a faster connection doesn't speed up that process past a certain point, let alone memory restrictions.)

It's the access times that cause the horrible lag more so than just displaying what's already there. (Though there's no denying that some mesh is pretty heavy even for a modern GPU. The way a viewer renders "selection highlights" makes the problem even worse if you right-click some mesh body/heads for example.)

But it IS textures, at least to a point. (It's not the only issue of course.)

Reduce texture use in a sim and you will see framerates skyrocket. When I optimize textures in a build (shrinking textures, getting rid of redundant textures, etcetera) I often see my framerates double or triple.

Unless you're saying I have the ability to bend reality with my mind, texture misuse is clearly a big part of the performance equation.

Anyone who has game design experience with texturing will tell you too much texture data is going to slow down framerates. It's not just SL. That's why, unless you have a beefy videocard, you're going to see framerates drop if you download a high res texture pack for games like TES or Fallout.

what would the perfect rp sim be? I was considering a sci-fi sim set in a post-apocalyptic setting after the eruption of a super-volcano plunging the world into near-eternal winter, humans survived for a while but eventually went extinct and the only sentient beings inhabiting earth are robots that build more robots, try to survive/rebuild ect. there would be multiple factions including a cult that saw the humans as gods and attempt to emulate the natural life style as much as a construct can, scavengers and bandits murdering others for parts, and a city powered by non-renewable resources that is running out of said resources which will plunge the population into a world of biofuel that's difficult to cultivate in the freezing environment and likely wouldn't be able to support everyone.

There's no such thing as a perfect RP sim theme, but I'd mainly recommend avoiding generic fantasy since there's so many sims that do that already.

I'd also recommend starting small. You don't need a full sim, start with something more affordable like a 4096sq.m. parcel, or even a 2048. That way you can grow your land with your playerbase.

Another thing I recommend: Don't split your players up. Sure have factions, but don't force those factions to keep to themselves.A lot of RP sims have died out because the admin didn't let faction members mix freely. If there's only 2 people in your RP sim, you want them to be able to get together and RP, even if it's not "realistic".

You want to build a community first and let the RP flow from that. Hold OOC events just to get players together and mingling. Dance parties, avatar contests, town hall meetings, whatever will get your players coming together and chatting out of character in the sim. People prefer to RP with people they know, so help get your community to know each other.

Speaking of, people hate feeling like outsiders in an RP sim. A lot of people will avoid RP sims for fear of running into the locals and interrupting something. One way to get around this is to have OOC "Open House" days, like once a month, where people know they can come check out the sim without interrupting RP, having to wear an OOC HUD, or following a notecard full of OOC rules.

And speaking of the rules, keep it simple, stupid. No one likes wading through multiple notecards of droning text.

There's other ideas out there too. If you need player support to help cover land costs, maybe consider the "themed rental sim" approach. The Wastelands, Caledon, New Babbage and others each began as a single sim with some themed infrastructure and theme rules regarding tenant builds. Nowadays they're their own continents, supported by the rentals. You give up some control over the build and build quality, but it can be a great way to build a community. Just be sure to check out the RP rules of those sims, they often do not make RP mandatory, letting outsiders come and explore, that's key to how they've lasted so long and grown so much.

Speaking of the Wastelands, an IC game system, like the Wastelands "Salvage" game, can give people a reason to come back and hang around even when the sim is empty.

The Wastelands also hosts regular OOC and IC events like movie nights, Fight Night at the pit, dance parties, etcetera.

Depends on the scale. Probably have a GM or mod play the 'big bad' or whatever everyone had to fight against. Ideally it'd be something large, not human sized, so it forced cooperation within the sim. I'd probably have a group chat for intercom things, but allow people to act on their own free will outside that. The only forseeable issue would be chat range and such, but I believe huds can adjust that.

Also everyone would have specific 'turns' and freeform would be thrown out the window in favor of a dice roll battle system. Just to keep things from getting to complex if, say, you had 10 people fighting one thing at once. Could also try to have it so one person posted, then the GM, then another, then GM, etc.

A large issue would be post order and such.

A group could be used to mention any world changing things. For example, if the main enemy smashed over a building, people inside could be alerted to try and escape or something.

I tried following some advice on here that seemed good so I'm on a small plot of land, I have some concise rules, and didn't put too much restrictions on characters.

The thing is, we had a vague set of rules to follow in RP combat by way of Materia. Each Materia had different levels and strengths. So you could have a Level 1 Fire which was a basic fireball, causing mild impact and burns at best, but a Level 4 Fire (called 'Firaja' iirc) is a heavily damaging inferno.

The issue is that different players had different interpretations of what level of power these abilities should have, and if it's a physical ability, how they would effect and/or stack up to a superhuman character being struck by/using the same ability.

We've got a very popular Materia called Slash All. Level 1 and 2 is a multi-target, omnidirectional attack for mild damage at best. Level 3, Blast Wave, is a literal 'shockwave' that deals moderate damage, whereas Level 4, Flash, is a lightning-fast strike that is very severe.

The problem is how you interpret just how much damage it is dealt to your character and vice versa. It got very frustrating to use Slash All 4 and have your target barely react to it because they have a higher level HUD and/or are a SOLDIER/Raven, the superhumans I mentioned.

exactly, that is the exact point where freeform breaks down. how strong is strong? how fast is fast? or hardy? or dexterous? whatever metrics you judge these transitory concepts by, chances are very good the person next to you judges them differently. this is why actual rules are important if your rp sim is going to have any sort of conflict between players AT ALL. and since conflict is what actually makes stories interesting, without it you don't really have an rp sim, you've got a themed chatroom. it is also part of the reason why nothing ever happens in freeform RP sims, because nothing CAN happen. without a vehicle for characters to perform and fairly resolve actions taken against other characters you wind up with everyone standing around waiting for something to happen because otherwise anything they could think to try to do can be shot down in an instant so why bother trying to do anything at all

I liked the sim mostly for the story, but the combat aspect, while interesting initially, definitely did not sit well with me when it comes to 'balance'. Because we have characters that are supposed to be stronger than others, whatever flimsy metric we already have doesn't really mean anything.

It's the same with Star Wars RP, actually. SWRP is infamous for having a million different HUDs and complex conflict resolution systems aside from the typical real-time combat HUDs (which is basically SLMC, aka crap at that point), all of which are crap. Even the Star Wars Tactics system that's now popularly used in the most populated Star Wars sim, Fourth Dimension, is crap. More power levels, although damage calculations and such are handled through the HUD and thereby not requiring much guess-work, but its infuriatingly complex rules that take away from the actual roleplay is asinine.

We're focusing more on trying to build a damn tabletop wargame than a roleplaying simulation. A D20 or D100 is a perfectly reasonable way to resolve conflicts. Alternate rolling for attack and defense, ties automatically go to the defender, and keep going until someone's health pool reaches 0 and they are defeated, not dead, defeated. It's simple, straight-forward, and elegant.

Beyond that I don't think the sim owner is too uptight about the dress code. So as long as it looks generally Greek/Roman/Persian you should be ok as far as outfits. I know Dark Prohpet Designs and Pucca Firecaster Creations have some good options along those lines.

If you're into "modern Japanese-themed Harry Potter-ish school with adult elements complete with forbidden forest", Hentai High is fairly popular, and - despite the name, is depicted as an academy for adult students on a private island. The school there had received an update sometime in 2016, and the town is currently getting updates planned - they already updated the bar and the police station. Since a certain person there had chose to step down from their position, some people also known in /d/ who have had previous experience with it have started to show interest in it again.

Due to its popularity, there is the potential to get idiots, which sometimes does encourage the regulars there to shy away from new people and stick to their cliques, but generally if you're a good enough roleplayer, you can probably break the ice. Participating in social events can help you get to know some people there better.

I've seen people try to do things to get people out of their cliques. I've also heard people repeatedly say "stop being cliquey" in their discord. I think it's just difficult to have people break the ice in general.

The administrative staff has been lately trying to avoid the whole militarization of the whole HHPD. This tends to happen though to begin with because there's oftentimes a bunch of attacks going on, especially by the forest yokai. Hasn't been happening lately though.

The person who runs Hajime City used to go to Hentai High. If you ever talked to them about it, they'll probably say differently from what I'm about to say. I'm personally convinced that they went through with the city because they were limited in what they could do as the "Blue Skulls" faction they were running at HH. While she wasn't the owner of the blue skulls, she had some sort of obsession with it. The owner of the Blue Skulls on the other hand, wasn't trying to run a gang in HH, they were trying to run a *mafia*. On a school island.

If you look at HC's backstory at all on their website, you'll notice that the Blue Skulls are pretty much depicted as snowflakes.

I personally don't trust the owner in any case.

HH in its former days on another sim was just a flat out sex sim and had no rp to begin with. Then a crowd of rpers slowly formed and took the helm. Honestly i think they should change the name, but Hentai High is an established, not perfect, but known name around SL.

If you look at the groups population and how they use roles to determine advancement, changing the name would entail reinviting several thousand people into the right roles, too, and for what looks to be at least 20+ groups for all their factions and stuff.

If it's just for the retarded group title, you can offer people more than one title per group, as a group can have multiple roles.

If you really need a hundred groups that are manually given away by admins because they are way too lazy to check in if someone has the correct "job" title, there's moderated titler systems available and they are easily creatable if they need some special snowflake system.

Honestly, there's been a lot going on with both a majority of the faction leaders and the other staff members outside of second life, which in turn affects traffic. We've discussed this issue among ourselves and a possible solution is more frequent events.

Keep in mind, we also allow player-run events and the community is always our priority. Feel free to contact one of us if you have any ideas. We hope with the new underground city in the works will usher in both old and new players. The dungeon crawl being worked on will also be an interesting experiment to reel more players in. But, who knows?

HC and HH both work under the concept of factions are seperate from the main group. Each faction has its own hierarchy separate from the admins that are ran by a faction head. It allows for people to still be a student and then join a faction and work their way up so they can feel they earned their role and are rewarded for their efforts. I have positions on both sims, it is not required to have any other group other than the main, if you choose to join a faction thats your choice.
