The infamous Caligula from 1979 directed by Tinto Brass and starring Malcom McDowell, Teressa Ann Savoy, Helen Mirren & Peter O’Toole.

It is and at the same time it isn't Caligula. I mean it's been a few years since I saw it, but the gif looks like the inserts Bob Guccione produced. They bring nothing to the picture and are rather artless (Though I do admit to saving a couple of the lesbian centered webms. I can't say I watch them)

Brass did a really decent job with his great cast. Not as bad as Gore had imagined it would be… Until Guccione ruined it.

It is really. From what I recall, the actors did real well with Tinto Brass, it comes off as campy at times, but I, and no doubt you've, suffered through a lot worse. Really nice set direction. Too bad that tv adaptation of I, Claudius didn't have half as much. It's no Fellini's Satyricon, but it's not as bad as some say. The plot is just about a mad man, so what can one expect?

Shieeeet. I did try to watch the film way back, but the hardcore scenes were really annoying, so I gave up.

Forgot I found this bachelor‐thesis by Alexander Tuschinski, where he goes over the history of the film and tries to reconstruct Tinto’s original vision for the film…

Oh, I saw the "restored" version with all that crap taken out. Still plenty of nudity and implied sex, but more like some kind of Heavy Metal story.

Thanks for the essay, it looks great.

I always wanted to direct films, and though I've given up on that now, I keep these dream projects in my head. One of my favorites would be to adapt Marius the Epicurean to screen. Dreamy odd coming-of-age story set in emperor Aurelius' Rome.
