How many teams do you think will compete in the tournament? I think it will be four teams per kingdom. For example:

Teams representing Vale:

RWBY

JNPR

CFVY

???? (CFVY's fellow non-freshmen friends and classmates. Entered in the same year as CFVY.)

Please discuss.

I think you are right on the 4 teams each bit, but I think that, to save on the modeling budget, Team CRDL will be the other entrant.

What about Penny? Didn't she say she was competing in the tournament too, or am I imagining things?

OP here. I can see the logic behind that. But I really hope that that won't be the case because having a second non-freshman hunter team whose friends with CFVY would satisfy my preference for patterns. (i.e. RWBY is friends with JNPR, so CFVY being friends with a team from the same year as them would complete a pattern.)

The only way I see CRDL taking part in the tournament is through the initiation stages to decide who competes in the tournament, only to get their asses kicked and not qualify for the tournament. Which I could see Cinder using this as a way to turn CRDL to the Dark Side.

Not to mention that if they go with the "four teams per kingdom" route, they're going to have to create a shit load of new characters anyways. Might as well create a new Beacon team that would serve as the JNPR to CFVY's RWBY. Though I can see why that might not be a possibility. [spoiler]I just wish CFVY wasn't alone in their status as non-freshmen who aren't nameless background characters. ;_;[spoiler]

I assume Penny would be part of a hunter team from the School in Atlas.

Apparently this is how the tournament is going to work according to the RTX 2015 leaks. The first round of the tournament is going to be a four-man-team vs four-man-team basis, the second round of the tournament is going to be a two-man-team vs two-man-team basis, then the semi-finals/finals will be a single fighter vs single fighter basis. So far we know that the characters who are either confirmed or most likely to partake in the tournament are as follows.

1. Kingdom of Vale/Beacon Academy:

>Team RWBY

>Team JNPR

>Team CFVY

>Team CRDL? (or a different team if they can't/won't fight for whatever reason)

2. Kingdom of Mistral/Haven Academy:

>Team SSSN

>Team ABRN

>Cinder's Team? (or a different team if they can't/won't fight for whatever reason)

>Mistral/Haven Team #4

3. Kingdom of Atlas/Unnamed Atlas Academy:

>Penny's Team

>Atlas Team #2

>Atlas Team #3

>Atlas Team #4

4. Kingdom of Vacuo/Unnamed Vacuo Academy:

>Vacuo Team #1

>Vacuo Team #2

>Vacuo Team #3

>Vacuo Team #4

That just leaves us with either nine or eleven slots worth of new characters in a four man team type of structure. I imagine that the two vs two round will create many pairings by the hands of shippers everywhere. Hopefully Volume 3 is long enough to showcase all these fights even if they end up short. I don't want to see any characters win or lose off-screen.

I doubt any of the main cast will lose off screen, but I doubt they will spend the time designing 9 new teams worth of character and equipment. I'd expect maybe 3 new teams, and then for added drama the finals will be in-house, maybe Ruby versus Penny for the final and Yang versus Coco as a play off.

>create many pairings by the hands of shippers

The only ship I want to see is RubyxMe.

>Cinder's Team

I could have sworn that they just sneaked in as students to hack into Beacon's computers or something. I don't think the Academy is so incompetent that they'd let them fight in the tournament too. Who would even be their fourth team member? Certainly not Neo…

That's why I said that these fights might end up short. Because the fights between more important characters will obviously be longer than the fights between less important characters. (For example, RWBY vs ABRN will be longer than Team FUCK vs Team SHIT by virtue of having major characters as one of the competitors.)

The way I see it, some fights will last for 2-3 episodes if the fight contains important characters while some fights will be so short that you could cram 2-3 short fights within a single episode. What I hope will happen if Rooster Teeth goes this route is that even if the fights are short, we'll still get a basic idea of the personalities and fighting styles of the potential shit-load of new characters that this volume would introduce.

>>1280

That's why I added the parentheses next to Cinder's Team in the first place. To clarify that they might not compete in the tournament at all.

And to be quite frank, I agree with you anon. I don't want Cinder's Faction or Team CRDL to compete in the tournament. Mainly because Cinder will be less likely to get caught by Glynda if she doesn't fight.

As for Team CRDL, I don't see them as being good enough to qualify for the tournament themselves. I'd rather have the fourth Beacon/Vale slot be filled by a second non-freshman team who is friends with CFVY like how JNPR is friends with RWBY. (And, you know, Team Cinder's slot being filled by a legitimate team from Haven Academy who aren't posing as students but are actual students there.)

Plus I could see Cinder exploiting Cardin's anger and resentment to the point where he'll turn to the bad guy's side.

An evil sorceress exploiting the emotions of a young male student? Sounds familiar…

Cardin even looks a little like Seifer.

Your right, he kind of does look like a little bit like Seifer.

Just to make a quick update on this post/list based on feedback from this thread, here's what the potential tournament roster could look like.

1. Vale/Beacon:

>Team RWBY

>Team JNPR

>Team CFVY

>Vale/Beacon Team #4

2. Mistral/Haven:

>Team SSSN

>Team ABRN

>Mistral/Haven Team #3

>Mistral/Haven Team #4

3. Atlas:

>Penny's Team

>Atlas Team #2

>Atlas Team #3

>Atlas Team #4

4. Vacuo:

>Vacuo Team #1

>Vacuo Team #2

>Vacuo Team #3

>Vacuo Team #4

That's about 43 potential new characters that could be introduced during the tournament. I highly doubt that students from lower grade schools like Signal or Sanctum would compete in the tournament to begin with. They'd most likely get crushed in the first round like lambs to the slaughter.

I'm thinking that they'll just be unimportant background characters that hardly get mentioned or shown for the most part. We might have another Velvet on our hands though since one of these throwaway characters is bound to attract the interest of the fans. Though that's just my guess.

I don't know, RWBY is heavily influenced by anime, and from what I've seen, they tend to introduce a shitload of new characters whenever an anime goes into a tournament arc. If they were to show each of the 16 teams fighting each other, they might be able to cram two fights as a minimum for the least important characters.

The first round would give the new characters enough screen time to give us a basic understanding of their personalities, fighting styles, and team dynamics at best. The RWBY vs ABRN fight looked short, but then again, it was unfinished footage that they'll most likely expand upon.

As for the second round, I can see whoever advances to that stage of the tournament get the second highest amount of character development. Mainly because the second round will be on a duo vs duo basis. Which means that any currently unseen team (not revealed at RTX 2015) that gets to round two could send two of their team members to fight on said team's behalf. The duos from any potential unseen team lucky enough to advance would be seen as the most developed members of their team by virtue of having more chances to shine.
