it's not that being nice is bad, it's that this sentimentality stuff rings false to the people at whom it's aimed. if everyone's special, nobody is and all that crap. if you want it to sound personal there need to be some sort of identifying features, it's got to be over something more than being sad.

not sure sincerity's the issue i have, more the patronizing "you're here because you're sad and lonely" thing. i've got a gut reaction against caring that emphasises unhappiness, so the other stuff might be rationalizations, but it seems like it's the social equivalent of a poverty trap.
