BLDGBLOG (http://www.bldgblog.com/) is a blog loosely about architecture. Most posts are about some small self-contained piece of trivial, often centered around some unexpected "physical" way of interacting with buildings. E.g. muon tomography to look inside ancient Mayan pyramids; or the way burglars (and IDF soildiers) prefer going through walls instead of doors; or seemingly ordinary boring houses which turn out to be a hidden air intake or seismological measuring station.

Nice file name.

It isn't about looking like a trap but behaving like one. Exaggerated performative femininity is a hot commodity.

I think you're right that putting on a performance is the key. The aesthetics of the video really emphasises its own artificial/constructed nature, which is also a central part of the aesthetic of drag queens/4chan traps.

This video really involves a remarkable number of conspicuous indirections. The frequent cuts draws attention to the fact that we are watching a video. She's lipsyncing instead of singing, she's wearing makeup and a wig and contact lenses and costume, and she is acting out exaggerated emotions which you could not sustain for more than a few seconds at a a time, all drawing attention to the fact that she's acting a role. And the costume she's wearing is of a girl-band idol (a genre which is all about building an artificial image), and Nico in particular is famous for the large gap between her stage persona and the "real" her, except in fact even Nico's real personality is constructed because she's an anime/video game character.

[Insert a paragraph about "precession of simulacra" here.]

Someone on Twitter posted [pic related], which seems pretty accurate. The video makes no pretense of being an accurate depiction of a real person, but we still can't help being entranced by the hologram girl. I was trying to think of what this reminded me of, and eventually realized it was the subplot from William Gibson's _Pattern Recognition_ when they photoshop a "better than real" girl in order to catfish some poor Japanese nerd. But I guess Gibson actually got this wrong; he thought they needed to use deception, while actually nerds on twitter fall in love even/especially with the openly artificial.

Insightful post.

Sci-fi writers who try to make a kind of humanist point against the artificial seem to refuse to admit just how much stronger as a stimulus the artificial can be. A faithful husband untemped by any human woman would leave his wife for a hologram girl, just like she would trade him for a handsome vampire, werewolf or worse. It doesn't even matter if one is moderately averse to artifice; the sheer magnitude of the superstimulus can overpower the aversion.

This point has completely been driven home by this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmkwaZzsk3U .

In here, some Asian women completely change their face by the use of a lot of makeup, artificial skin extensions, eyebrows, eyelashes, contact lenses… They look very artificial, but that doesn't make them unattractive either.

Also apparently >>13193 has more cosplays. Some people are upset about people calling the OP video a trap, look at the title here emphasising "HER" lol. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjX-asJ66WY

Seems like there's a case to be made for "trap" being a gender.

"Trap" is a word that has a generally accepted definition and also aesthetic baggage that goes beyond that definition. The definition of the word "trap" is something like "a passing AMAB cross-dresser who is probably attracted to males", which does involve gender and sexuality. The aesthetic baggage comes from the history of traps as a 4chan phenomenon. It was developed by AMABs but influenced by cis female camwhores both of whom performed for an audience they knew was mostly straight male. A 4chan trap is a fairly well-defined character if you try to imagine >her: slender, with no or small fake breasts, wearing striped socks and anime-inspired clothing and accessories like cat ears or actual cosplay. Trying to act like an anime schoolgirl is common. It's an act like being a goth at a goth party is an act. It would be helpful to have a separate term for this aesthetic and type of act but there is no obvious reason to lump the straight cis women who perform it with the various AMABs.

How did striped socks become associated with traps?

A good reason might be that they appeal to trap masters like >>13197 the same way regular traps do.

If being a trap is performative, and the performances are interchangeable, then why not lump them together? Doesn't your description fit?

That was only about considering "trap" a gender. You can lump cis/trans/etc. "traps" together in other ways. As I said, it would be good to have a separate word to refer to the aesthetic itself regardless of the gender of the performer.

also, I really like the format and I wish an 8chan-equivalent existed for its software style so ratanon could be a textboard instead of an imageboard.
