i read the post before it got taken down. it didn't fail quite as badly as i thought it would, but then we're only hearing about it from Duncan's perspective and there's no way he would admit 100% defeat when he could get away with claiming it was only like 90% defeat. there have been successful examples of intentional communities with hierarchy, but the main examples i'm familiar with are explicitly religious and i suspect part of their success is due to aspects of religious belief that rationalists are unwilling to adopt (if only instrumentally).
