Jesus Christ his new book is basically an elaborate response to people who try to put him down.
I'm starting to get sick of the rat community. The cult leaders no longer feel any shame regarding reaping the benefits.
It has become a shitpool of festering MIRI,CFAR,EA ( plus whatever meme organisation is affiliated with it today) pseudomarketing testing ground.

You may wish to review how LW came to be. The initial ban on talking about AI was there for a reason. MIRI/SIAI has been a community-defining presence from the start.

Nigger it's just the local vernacular for calling someone stupid. "You're stupid for thinking that" isn't a very deep and thoughtful argument, but as thought-terminating cliches go, "you use the wrong words and therefore what you say can be disregarded" beats it the fuck out.

>The argument goes: You’re more rational than average, so you shouldn’t adjust to the average. Instead, you should identify other people who are even more rational than you (on the matter at hand) and maybe Outside View with them, but no one else. Since you are already pretty rational, you can definitely trust your judgment about who the other rational people are.
I have not read Inadequate Equilibria, but I have read several reviews of it, including SA's and Robin Hanson's. They convinced me to read the book. If Scott adequately summarized EY's thesis in the quoted paragraph, then EY focuses on something highly relevant: if you think you have better-than-average judgment, you should defer to experts less than the average person should. It sounds like he does not spend enough time addressing the fundamental problem of how to assess your own judgment. If good fortune prevails, this will only encourage others to write more about it. (And could it just be the thing to focus on for those trying to revive LW? It's applied rationality and super important. The Nassim Taleb-like appeal is somewhat worrying, because irrational contrarians seem to love Taleb, but should help with the marketing.)

Why bother? A dumb person who fails because they didn't defer to experts will be a smaller loss than a smart person who fails because they're paralyzed by too much of the outside view. There's net benefit if both defer less. Just act anyway.

A smart person in that scenario would defer to experts, though, which gives a higher chance of failure than an autonomous decision but isn't that bad. And aren't there far more "dumb" people?

This is not as self-evident as your lack of justification implies. Encouraging dumb or merely average people to make mistakes may be a net loss, especially if your society is imperfectly sorted by IQ and important physical labor isn't fully automated. What is the IQ of the average nurse or the average car mechanic? I'll guess 107.5 and 100, respectively. Should they be more daring?
