back in the old days, every week SNL used to air a "bumper spot" between commercial reads, where the announcer would say, "Guests of Saturday Night Live stay at Th Essex House Hotel, New York's Finest Hotel Blah Blah Blah"...
and I thought to myself :
"Andy Kaufman is a Guest...
so he's staying at The Essex House Hotel?"
The show ended at 1:00 AM here on the east coast, so I waited an extra 15 minutes just to make sure Andy would have enough time to make it back to the hotel...
Back then, we didn't have smartphones or the internet.. back then, people dialed 511 and it connected you to a long distance information operator...
directory assistance, they called it..
A human, usually a woman answered the line, and this one gave me the number to the Essex House Hotel..
I dialed the New York exchange, and it rang... " thank you for calling the Essex House hotel, how may I direct your call?"
I didn't ask if Andy was staying there...
instead, I simply said, "Andy Kaufman's room, please"..
I wasn't even sure if my hunch was correct, or if Andy was staying at that hotel or not.. I was just winging it
"one moment please. I'm connecting you now, sir."
(I was delighted to discover my hunch was right !!)
the phone rang in the hotel room
