I think about this a lot as well. I've been browsing imageboards since 2007. One thing I'll always remember is that people have been saying that "4chan was never good," or "/b/ has always sucked," or something else along those lines, for as long as I've lurked.
I can't help but feel as though the pre-2012 days of 4chan/ED/SomethingAwful/Fark were so much better. People seemed to have more fun back then, but then again, it was just easier in those days to have fun in general. Now we have to put up with being under constant surveillance, glownigs and shills everywhere, ISP's collect your every keystroke, and imageboards have a lot more exposure than they used to, with rivals and enemies of these communities being far more organized and informed. It's hard to have fun, or even just a good thread, with these factors in play.
I think Discord has quickly become the new mode of communication for people who would have typically used 4chan over a decade ago. The fact that most discords are invite-only makes their service a much more viable alternative to 4chan or 8chan/kun, when the sites mentioned have been overrun by newfags and people who didn't spend enough time lurking.
