You're probably thinking of the HF/Shortwave side of things where the rigs are really expensive. Mostly I hang out on the 2 meter band/VHF/146 MHz, which is more local community of Old Dudes (but interesting old dudes--retired engineers who built radio and tv stations from scratch, former got-shot-at-in-Nam Army Signalers, etc.), and getting on that band can be done with $35 Baofengs. Being a technical hobby gives me something to do. Not for everyone, of course.
