I use formant synthesizers in my musical doodles all the time.
It sounds like a human's voice, but it's not...
All it says is VOWELS...
Formant synthesis creates vowel sounds in a human-esque tone, usually switching mid-tone from one vowel to another...
As in : """ahhh---eeeeh"
or "ooohh wah"
I use them as instruments, like a fucked up baseline...
It sounds trippy as fuck

I made music for a long while but I never achieved the sound I wanted. I liked Justice's sound, as is why my shirt is Justice's Cross t-shirt. I tried to come up with something new and original and could never find something unique, so I gave up on music. Closest I got was this music for a game I was going to make but gave up on that also, because video games suck.

To get that particular sound took many combings over of all the reverb throughout and took many, many hours and days just for that, but it was also experimentation. Lots and lots of automation

None of these are actual songs or intended to be anything other than musical doodles... A sketch pad for sound instead of Pen & Paper
They are all created using nothing more than an Android phone

Consider it an experiment

If you're using an iPhone, there are actually some even better apps available...
But if you're using Android, I'm going to tell you exactly which apps to download....
CAUSTIC 3
and AUDIO EVOLUTION
Don't waste your time with FL studio mobile.. it is horrible.. it's garbage..
Even though image line created fruity loops many many years ago, and in so doing, created the single most effective user-friendly sequencer experience ever created... They really dropped the ball when it came to mobile... They fucked up bad... They created a useless horrible piece of crap mobile app that serves no purpose...
So... I've tried all of them, and you can take my advice to heart :
CAUSTIC 3 = the one to use
It's such a simple, elementary and quite honestly aesthetically unappealing app....
It doesn't have the badass graphics
but what it DOES have isThe most powerful and effective audio sequencer available for Android devices
Disclaimer: this post and the subject matter and contents thereof - text, media, or otherwise - do not necessarily reflect the views of the 8kun administration.
No.100831
==CAUSTIC 3 :; a straight up sequencer app, with horrible flat graphics and a powerful dynamic sequencer engine... It comes bare bones out of the box
If you want to modify it, you'll have to import your own samples and begin modifying the waveforms yourself
But it's got everything you need to get the job done effectively and quickly
I find it to be an invaluable element to creating my musical doodles that pop into my head
I value it so much because I can create the main structure of my doodlesquickly, before I have a chance to forget them
As you know, creative ideas are often fleeting, coming out of nowhere with no warning, and disappearing just as quickly...
That's when the next creative idea comes flowing in... That's the way it works...
So if you want the ability to turn one of your fleeting musical ideas into an actual tangible audio file, the quickest route isCAUSTIC 3
EVERYTHING I'VE PLAYED FOR YOU WAS CREATED USING CAUSTIC 3, USING ONLY AN ANDROID DEVICE IN THE PALM OF MY HAND
I was already producing music and in a band back in the old days, when the first digital samplers and sequencers were invented...
I lucked out, because I actually got to work in a professional recording studio.. Axis studios in Atlanta, where my friend owned the entire fucking place...
So I was lucky enough to teach myself how to use the very first emulators, and the fairlight... And the emax emulator
The old 303s... The 808 drum machines.. Roland and boss... I got to teach myself how to use the actual outboard devices...
How to sequence music...
Back then, it was entire keyboards... These days it's all just digital graphics, but I was cutting my teeth using the actual hardware devices, complete with physical keyboards...
(The very first ones had NO GRAPHIC USER INTERFACE, other than a small square LCD window with some numbers on it to tell you where you were)
There was no visual interface to rely on.. you had to understand how the menu operated, how the sequencer functioned mathematically
You had to understand how to build patterns and loops and link them into songs, all without the aid of a visual interface
So when my friends parents bought them really expensive musical production equipment and sequencers, it was always ME who was asked to come teach them how to use the equipment...
That's how I learned the different interfaces of all the different sequencers by the different manufacturers
So when the first fruity loops came out, it was kind of a toy... Complete with the name fruity loops
But it wasn't a toy.... It just looked like a toy
As the years past, imageliine continued to upgrade fruity loops, eventually dropping the name fruity loops, because people associated it with being a toy...
I remember when the first FL studio version was released
And every year it's gotten better and better and better and better. In fact it's the best, no matter what anybody says
The very best is FL studio for a PC
And I've always used computers to sequence and produce my musical ideas.. until several years ago when I decided to start experimenting with handheld music production

CAUSTIC 3 :
THE MOST EFFECTIVE, SIMPLE, USER FRIENDLY, FUNCTIONAL, QUICK, AND AESTHETICALLY UNAPPEALING SEQUENCER created for Android devices I've ever seen
It's where you build all of your music from scratch, even importing samples from other songs if that's your cup of tea...
Or creating it completely from scratch, building your own original song piece by piece...
It's really the best if you're fucking with Android. You can save a lot of time by trying it out, because you won't be needing any other sequencer app after that...
That's your sequencer... But you're going to need one more app to finish your work... You need a production suite...
AN EDITING SUITE
AUDIO EVOLUTION:
Beyond any shadow of a doubt, hands down, easily THE MOST TECHNICALLY PRECISE AUDIO EDITOR FOR ANDROID
In fact, every phone has its owninherent latency... IPhone or Android, it doesn't matter... And it's not specific to the particular model of phone...
It's not like all Samsung Galaxy s21 phones have the same audio latency
It's actually inherent to each individual device itself
Every mobile phone has an inherent millisecond variable audio latency...
Where the audio is off, out of sync by a matter of milliseconds...
AUDIO EVOLUTION CORRECTS THIS
Before you even start using audio evolution, it allows you to do an audio latency test on your own particular phone..
It will play a series of tones, then calculate your phone's inherent audio latency down to the particular microsecond
And it will correct your phones audio latency...
At that point, AUDIO EVOLUTION is calibrated down to the millisecond, and ready to make any special effects or audio editing needs a pleasant experience...
It's super technical
It's where you would join different patterns together, and link them into a sequential song, add effects like reverb and delay attack and decay
Add all your special effects like phase shifters and tone adjustment
It does speed adjustment down to the micrometer, and allows you the option of changing the pitch or keeping the pitch the same
It does all of the full-blown recording studio post-production work in quick order
Use caustic 3 as your sequencer
And use audio evolution as your outboard editor and effects suite

Just fuck around with those apps and familiarize yourself with them, and you're already aware... Bye familiarizing yourself, you'll end up with actual tangible audio files afterwards...
And that will inspire you to continue
And these don't have to be finished songs
It's not about creating masterpieces
It's about occupying your mind
It's the opposite of boredom
In fact, it's the ultimate cure for boredom
Just to entertain yourself, and for no other reason

Believe it or not, I created this song using a video editing app on Android
Not even a sequencer
I created the audio files myself, and compiled them using A VIDEO EDITOR
It was an experiment where I was testing the limits of a particular video editor's audio functions
I just wanted to see if it could handle audio as well as it handled video
And it did
Just another experiment

Honestly, I'm not sure if I like this song or not... I was super super high when I sequenced it one night, totally high out of my mind... I really don't remember any of the circumstances behind it...
And I've listened to it only a handful of times...
And quite honestly, I can't really remember whether I like it or not
I think there's a good possibility I don't like it
But it kept me occupied one night, because I was high as fuck, and I was a little bit bored perhaps, so within a few minutes this song had been born, even though it's not really a song
Calling this a song would be a misnomer
It's more just like a musical doodle..
An audio sketch pad
And it's perfectly fine to create doodles in the sketch pad.. it doesn't always have to be a complete project

Yeah... It would be good to use a brief segment out of that last doodle, as an insert into a different song, a quick 32 measure break....
This particular song was created using FL studio mobile for Android, on a Samsung Galaxy S3 back in the day
I had not yet discovered caustic 3 at this point...
Actually, come to think of it that's not right
I actually DID discover caustic 3, butThe graphic user interface of caustic 3 is so flat and unappealing, I assumed it was a piece of garbage
Little did I realize caustic 3 was a much better sequencer than imageline FL Studio mobile for Android
I was simply turned off by the lack of visual graphic appeal when I looked at caustic three, so I assumed it must not be a very good app
Boy was I wrong
Nevertheless, I used a paid version of FL Studio Mobile for Android to create this "song"
(and of course it's NOT a "song"... it's just an experimental test I was performing, and this audio file is the end result)
And of course I create the videos using a handheld device as well
Just an experiment

On this song, five electro DJ robots, not only am I using FL studios version of format synthesizer voicing, but I'm mainly experimenting with sound effects like chambering around into a gun, and water noises, and far-fetched interdimensional elevator journeys
I was just fucking around with sound effects, but mainly I wanted to include the sound of chambering rounds into a pistol as percussion
But you can hear the difference between FL studios formant synth & caustic 3s formant synths

Hey, Hoe!!
Whaddya know?
You turn around
And 10 years have
Slipped right by you
Oh, I've never needed reasons
For believing in things
That I couldn't see
Or feel
I'm sure in your own good time
You'll probably find
your peace of mind
Meanwhile,
You did it in style....
I've been feeling crucified....
PIECE OF MIND!!!
(again, this isn't a "song")
I was simply experimenting with a particular chord structure I developed
No matter how many times I followed the scale down the keyboard, it never looped around and played the same sequence of notes twice...
The human brain can't realize it when listening, but the chords never repeat themselves...
It continually moves all over the keyboard, but never begins on the same note twice
It's basically a perpetual chord progression I created, that never loops around again...
That's what I was experimenting with

Years ago I had this idea about creating a song that involved a couple who got completely shot out on drugs, and their relationship fell to pieces...
It was in the height of the quality methamphetamine days, back in the old days
My reasonable idea was to create a phone call between a man and a woman, where he's begging her to please give him a chance that he will get clean off the drugs he promises
And you can hear her new boyfriend yelling at her in the background over the phone
The former dope dealer has now started fucking this guy's girlfriend
And it's a failed attempt to reconcile over a brief phone call, in which he gets hung up on after he hears his former drug dealer telling his girlfriend to hang up the phone and suck his dick some more...
At the end I was going to include a brief snippet of a radio broadcast I wanted to create...
In which the news announcer tells the local headlines, about the man they found in the local park with a self-inflicted gun shot wound... A suicide in the park.. and then straight into local weather and sports...
My idea was called ONLY ONE
Because the loser on the phone keeps telling her she's the only one he's ever wanted... Blah blah blah... Blah blah blah I love you baby, you're the only one for me blah blah blah
And then the loser shoots himself because his ex drug dealer is now fucking his girlfriend
After hearing this idea, you might assume I was in a situation like that, in a breakup caused by drugs, feeling suicidal.....
I wasn't.... That had nothing to do with anything personal in my life at the time... It was just an idea I came up with because everybody was doing methamphetamine and destroying their lives
This is just another experiment I was working on, and I never even completed it
I never recorded the phone call, I never created the radio broadcast content for the end of the song...
It was just a musical doodle in my head, and I left it unfinished
I wanted it to have a cold empty desolate feel
I was imagining a guy walking through the sleet and snow with no place to go, putting his last quarter into a payphone, and begging his whore girlfriend to please take him back...
So I tried to create a cold frozen sleet feeling to the song.. I envisioned having cars driving past in the sleet
That type of desolate cold feel

"And she's the only one whoever gave me just what I needed.. yeah, she's the only one who stuck around to see"
(After that intro, I was going to insert the phone call into the song, a back and forth bickering manic frantic drug induced phone call between a loser and his ex-girlfriend who's now fucking the meth dealer)
And I was going to close the song with the fake radio broadcast I meant to create.. A local news announcer giving a brief detail of the suicide after this phone call occurred....
ONLY ONE
Come to think of it, I might even ask Wendy if she would play along with me, and allow me to record a phone call where she plays the role of a woman who broke up with her drug addict loser boyfriend, and I will play the role of the blubbering begging idiot douchebag drug addict boyfriend, begging her to please take me back....
And it would be really easy for me to create the radio broadcast section
Then the song would be complete
