Add Marie Yovanovitch to the long — and growing — list of Trump haters who cash in on their TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome).

The former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, who was so toxic President Trump had to fire her, testified against the president at House impeachment hearings. Now, she’s getting more than a million dollars from publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, according to a New York Post report.

The book, a memoir that is not yet titled, is set for release in spring 2021.

“Yovanovitch’s book will deliver pointed reflections on the issues confronting America today, and thoughts on how we can shore up our democracy,” Houghton Mifflin Harcourt said in a statement.

Yovanovitch is represented by the Javelin literary agency, which has handled books for other #resistance icons such as ex-FBI director James Comey and former national security adviser John Bolton.

Yovanovitch’s long career in the U.S. Foreign Service came to an abrupt end in May 2019 when President Trump had her recalled from Ukraine.

Saudi King Salman hosts rabbi in official residence for first time

King tells group of leaders from five religions that Saudia Arabia is returning to the era of Islamic openness of earlier ages.

For the first time ever, the King of Saudi Arabia has met with and hosted a rabbi in his formal residence during an annual meeting of the KAICIID inter-religious dialogue organization’s last week.

Rabbi David Rosen, a leading figure in interfaith cooperation, is one of the eight members of the KAICIID board of governors representing the Jewish faith, and was one of those hosted by Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud at his royal palace in Riyadh last Thursday.

Rosen is also an Israeli citizen living in Israel, making his meeting with the king even more remarkable.

Rosen was one of seven of the board members who met with King Salman, including KAICIID’s representatives for Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, and Hinduism.

According to Rosen, King Salman talked about the changes which Saudi Arabia is undergoing of late and asserted that the Islamic kingdom was adopting a more open form of Islam than that which it has observed in recent decades.

Rosen said that the king argued that political Islam and extreme nationalism had forced the country into a more protective and reactive position in regard to its attitude to the Islamic faith, and that Saudi Arabia had been unduly influenced by extremist ideologies.

King Salman said that the country was now going about the process of restoring it culture to that of its original, enlightened Islamic orientation, a part of which was an openness to other religions, Rosen said.

“He invoked the historical and authentic character of Islam as the openness of Islam that was shut down in recent times by political factors,” said the rabbi.

“My visit does not create a new reality, but reflects a new reality, and it is testimony to a new openness in Saudi Arabia,” Rosen told The Jerusalem Post.

The rabbi said that this new so-called openness was “relative,” given that the country still has far different values than the West on issues such as the status of women and other matters, but insisted that Saudi Arabia had undergone a “dramatic transformation,” compared to where it has been just a few years ago.

Rosen described King Salman’s description of how Saudi Arabia had adopted the more fundamentalist and extremist form of Islam that was prevalent in the country until recently as “revisionist history,” but said that “We don’t have to accept his historical analysis in order to accept his contemporary approach.”

Four-Way Summit On Idlib Signals Turkey’s Inability To Turn Military Threats Into Reality

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan confirmed his intention to meet with the leaders of Russia and France Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron, as well as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, on March 5th in Istanbul to discuss the situation in Idlib.

On February 23rd, Erdogan said that Macron and Merkel suggested that Putin hold a four-sided summit on Syria in early March.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Turkey was unable to fulfill several key commitments to solve the problems around Syrian Idlib. In particular, she did not dissociate the armed opposition from the terrorists, ready for negotiations with the government of Bashar al-Assad in the framework of the political process.

On the evening of February 22nd, Erdogan made his customary warning that large-scale military action may be undertaken by the Turkish army if the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) doesn’t stop its offensive in Idlib.

He has vowed such action several times so far, and the SAA appears to be undeterred, all the while Turkey is deploying large numbers of military vehicles and equipment to Idlib, but they appear to be leading to little effect.

But, Erdogan admitting that such a meeting would take place means that a large-scale Turkish operation is unlikely to take place before that day, if at all.

The Russian and Turkish military are in constant contact on the situation in Syria, the Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.

If the necessity rises, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin will get into contact over the situation.

According to him, due to the aggravation of the situation in Syria, the past week “turned out to be extremely restless.”

“Naturally, the offensive actions of the terrorists could not go unanswered. The Syrian military, being in their own country, on their territory, naturally responded, which led to extreme tension. Thank God, our military, Russian and Turkish, are in constant contact , and, as we see, if necessary, the presidents will join in the discussion of this topic,” Peskov said.

Earlier, the Russian Reconciliation Center said that pro-Turkish militants, with the support of Turkish artillery, broke through the defenses of the Syrian army in the area of Kminas and al-Nayrab. Russian Su-24 fighter jets attacked the terrorists and destroyed one tank, six infantry fighting vehicles and five pickups. Turkey stopped its artillery attacks after Russia spotted them.

Peskov also noted that the President of Russia paid great attention to this issue.

“The situation remains tense. You know that this week the president devoted a lot of time to the situation in Syria. And, let’s say, the crisis situation around Idlib, in particular,” Peskov explained.

Separately, Peskov also, once again, underlined that Turkey was not fulfilling any of its commitments under the Sochi agreements.

Financial markets on Monday ratcheted up bets the U.S. Federal Reserve will be pressed to cut interest rates to cushion a feared hit to economic growth from the spread of the coronavirus. U.S. interest rates futures surged to their highest levels since last fall as evidence the virus was spreading further outside its original epicenter of China spurred a global sell-off in stocks and panicked buying of government bonds.

The federal funds futures contract tied to the Fed’s July policy meeting FFN0 reflected a greater than 85% probability the central bank’s benchmark overnight lending rate would be at least a quarter percentage point lower after that meeting’s conclusion, according to the CME FedWatch tool. A month ago that was seen as a roughly 50-50 prospect.

Contracts expiring in early 2021 FFF1FFG1 were priced for a Fed policy rate of around 1% or lower, compared with the current level of between 1.50% to 1.75%, where it sits after three rate cuts last year.

Top U.S. central bank officials have signaled repeatedly that they see no need to cut rates further any time soon because they see the American economy performing well and it is too soon to judge the risk from coronavirus.

Still, as the virus spreads, their resolve is likely to be tested in the weeks ahead. Monday’s stocks swoon followed a sharp increase in the number of cases reported in Italy, South Korea and Iran. A month ago it was generally aligned with the fed funds rate. As concerns about the coronavirus have grown, however, the gap between the two has widened at roughly the pace seen last spring before the Fed’s run of three rate cuts between July and October.

On Friday, a survey of U.S. purchasing managers indicated that activity in both the services and manufacturing sectors appeared to have stalled this month because of the outbreak, which upended global supply networks when goods production in China ground to a halt.

Apart from that report from IHS Markit, little evidence has yet to emerge of the virus denting U.S. growth, although economists have begun predicting it will.

Goldman Sachs on Sunday cut its estimate for first-quarter gross domestic product growth to 1.2% from 1.4% because of the disruption to supply chains.

A convicted murderer is on the loose after escaping from a work-release facility in Alabama, officials said.

Daniel Miner, 43, was reported missing from his bed on Saturday night during a count of inmates at the state-run facility in the town of Alpine, about 40 miles southeast of Birmingham, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections. It's unclear how the inmate escaped.

That’s a cheap insurance policy for the economy that the Fed shouldn’t pass up" even though as he says in the same op-ed "it isn't clear how much economic damage the virus will do. "

It was on something of a lark that Keith Urbahn and Matt Latimer found themselves working as literary agents. They had a client: their former boss, Donald Rumsfeld. They had a book: Rumsfeld’s follow-up to his 2011 memoir Known and Unknown. There was just one problem: they didn’t know very much about publishing.

In the end, it didn’t matter. The duo, who had worked for Rumsfeld in the White House—Latimer as a speechwriter and Urbahn as his chief of staff—wound up selling the nonfiction work, which came to be called Rumsfeld’s Rules, to Broadside Books for a healthy six-figure sum (it was published in 2012). Now Urbahn and Latimer are no longer the new kids on the block. They have an 11-person-agency called Javelin in Arlington, Va., that has been behind some of the biggest nonfiction deals of the summer, including rumored seven-figure agreements for James Comey (who sold a currently untitled work to Flatiron Books in early August) and Tucker Carlson (who landed at Threshold with a two-book agreement).

FARRELL: It Ain’t Over For Andy McCabe

Is Andrew McCabe off the hook? Don’t count on it. The former FBI deputy director has been one of the central figures in the various anti-Trump coup plots that have unfolded over the last four years. He was well placed to do it, serving as deputy director 2016-2018, and briefly as acting director in 2017. He had means, motive and opportunity to abuse his power to the hilt.

McCabe’s downfall was rapid. He stepped down from the deputy directorship in January 2018, ahead of findings from the DOJ Office of the Inspector General that he “lacked candor,” a.k.a lied, to investigators, on several occasions, even under oath. He was fired in March 2018, just days before he would have been eligible to retire with full pension, and in April it was revealed that the IG had made a criminal referral to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. The IG report that was made public that month detailed how McCabe systematically transmitted sensitive information to the media while lying to investigators and his boss about the matter and publicly condemning the leaks. is a useful case study in the type of duplicity that thrives in Washington’s government/media complex.

In the last few days, the Justice Department announced that McCabe would not face trial for these particular crimes. McCabe, of course, declared vindication. He told his media employer CNN that being branded a liar was “one of the most sickening and demeaning experiences of [his] life” and that it was “just an absolute disgrace that they let this thing drag on as long as they did and put my family through what we’ve gone through over the last two years.” He said he was “just disgusted at the way the whole thing has been handled.”

McCabe isn’t the only one who is disgusted. The disparity of prosecutorial judgment and treatment infecting Washington, DC, has a corrosive effect on the American publics’ faith in justice. There is no legitimate reason why McCabe should elude justice. The inspector general’s report clearly established the basis for a criminal indictment. The fact that he was not arrested comes across as yet another example of a sickening double standard.

As for his objections to the process dragging on, McCabe should have a little more self-awareness. He was hardly subjected to the full force of harassment, intimidation, leaking and other tools at the disposal of the government when waging war on a political target, which frequently lead to bankruptcy, extreme stress and other consequences. He should know, since that has been the type of treatment meted out to people like Roger Stone, General Michael Flynn and others with far less evidence of wrongdoing.

McCabe says that he expects more mistreatment from the “vindictive” Trump, echoing the post-acquittal media lie that the president will go on a vengeance tour against his political enemies. Here’s what McCabe is really afraid of: accountability.

Outrage in Croatia after effigy of same-sex couple burned

ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) – Croatia’s president and government joined activists Monday in expressing outrage at the burning during a carnival of an effigy showing a same-sex couple with their child.

The incident occurred Sunday in the southern town of Imotski. A large effigy showing two men embracing each other was torched in front of cheering festival-goers to the sound of the funeral music.

President Zoran Milanovic condemned the incident as an “inhumane, totally unacceptable act.” He demanded that the organizers apologize, while an LGBT group announced legal action.

“The event was observed by many children who could witness the spreading of hatred and inciting to violence,” Milanovic said in a statement.

Croatia’s government also said it is opposed to “any form of hate speech of aggression … and any act that insults the feelings of the Croatian people and contributes to the divisions within society,” the official Hina news agency reported.

Burning of effigies is a satirical tradition at Croatia’s carnivals, often representing public figures or politicians. Past incidents included the burning of a children’s book about same-sex families in 2018 and last year’s torching of an effigy of a Croatian Serb politician.

Sunday’s move follows a recent ruling by Croatia’s top court against discrimination of same-sex couples when it comes to acting as foster parents.

The Constitutional Court ruling in January was hailed as a major step forward in boosting gay rights in Croatia. But it also angered many in the predominantly conservative Catholic nation.

Croatia, which currently holds the six-month, rotating presidency of the European Union, has allowed same-sex partnerships since 2014, but gay couples are not allowed to adopt children. Milanovic, a liberal, was Croatia’s prime minister at the time. He beat a conservative former president in a runoff vote last month to become Croatia’s new head of state.
