Britain has condemned the arrest of its ambassador to Iran as "a flagrant violation of international law" after the diplomat was detained after attending a vigil for victims of the Ukraine International Airlines plane crash.

The UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office said in a statement that the ambassador, Rob Macaire, was released after a "brief detention."

Crowds gathered on Saturday in at least four locations in Tehran, chanting 'death to liars' and calling for the country's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to step down over the missile blunder, according to local reporters.

Video shared on social media showed angry protests followed by police intervention and clouds of tear gas. None of the video could be immediately verified by Euronews.

Posts to social media showed protesters take to the streets on Sunday as pressure mounted on the Iranian government to hold those responsible for shooting down the plane responsible.

Later on Saturday, US President Donald Trump sent a message of solidarity to Iranian protesters by tweeting in English and Farsi.

"To the brave, long-suffering people of Iran: I've stood with you since the beginning of my Presidency, and my Administration will continue to stand with you," he tweeted. "We are following your protests closely, and are inspired by your courage.

"The government of Iran must allow human rights groups to monitor and report facts from the ground on the ongoing protests by the Iranian people. There can not be another massacre of peaceful protesters, nor an internet shutdown. The world is watching."

Florida man charged with impersonating a security member for Trump's Marine One

A former Marine allegedly impersonated a security team member for Marine One, the helicopter that transports President Trump on short trips, and breached two checkpoints last week at Palm Beach International Airport, according to authorities, The New York Times first reported.

Brandon Magnan, 37, is charged with false personation of an officer or employee of the United States, according to federal court documents.

The helicopter unit, known as HMX-1, takes Trump to and from his residence in Florida. Trump was spending his winter vacation at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach at the time of the incident. Magnan approached a security checkpoint near where the helicopter was housed and showed credentials that indicated he was a law enforcement officer with the United States Marine Corps.

He made it past another checkpoint before a sheriff’s deputy there noticed that Magnan was not wearing a Marine Corps uniform. When confronted, Magnan told officers he was a retired member of HMX-1. However, the court documents show Magnan was dishonorably discharged about 10 years ago after being convicted at a court-martial for “serious offenses.”

According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Magnan was convicted of “abusive sexual conduct” and sodomy during his time in the military. It’s unclear what the details of those offenses are.

Magnan was arrested Jan. 6 and was released on a $100,000 bond, according to court documents.

If convicted of posing as a U.S. Secret Service officer, Magnan faces up to three years in prison. He is set to appear in a Florida federal court on Jan. 27.

BREAKING: Journalist Alleging Obama Admin Spied on Her Seeks to Reopen Case

TheHill reports Media figure Sharyl Attkisson is seeking to reopen her case against Obama administration Justice Department officials over claims they illegally spied on her.

A previous lawsuit Attkisson filed in 2015 alleging civil liberties and other violations was ultimately dismissed. Since then, she claims, new information about the identity of those involved in surveilling her computers and phones from 2011 to 2014 has come to light that warrant new litigation.

“The plaintiffs first acquired the details regarding key individuals involved in the surveillance in August 2019 from a person involved in the wrongdoing who has come forward to provide information,” Attkisson said in a complaint filed on behalf of herself and her family on Friday in federal court in Maryland.

Attkisson also filed similar litigation in federal court in Virginia, where the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit last year affirmed her lawsuit’s dismissal upon appeal.

Attkisson, who worked as a journalist at CBS News during the relevant period, now hosts a Sinclair television show. She also contributes opinion columns to The Hill.

While at CBS, Attkisson garnered acclaim for investigative reporting on Operation Fast and Furious, an Obama-era program meant to crack down on illegal arms trafficking but which went awry.

Among the defendants named in her suit is Rod Rosenstein, who was a U.S. Attorney under Presidents George W. Bush and Obama, before serving out a controversial two-year tenure as deputy attorney general under President Trump.

Attkisson alleges her Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable search and seizure was violated by government intrusions into her electronic devices while she reported on controversial issues like the 2012 attack on U.S. facilities in Benghazi, Libya.

The government of France plays a major role in retirement pensions - both providing and guaranteeing funds and overseeing the entire system.

The bid to boost the retirement age infuriated moderate unions Macron relies on, despite his insistence that French citizens need to work longer in order to keep the pension system - which may be facing a $19 billion deficit - financially sound.

In a Saturday letter from Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, the Macron administration said that it would "withdraw" the new age limit, and postpone major decisions on how to keep the system solvent until it can better assess the situation "between now and the end of April."

Macron described it as a "constructive compromise," which French union CFDT applauded. The CGT union called the measure "a smokescreen," however, which protesters agreed with as they took to the streets on Saturday.

Right-wing French politician Marine Le Pen called the Macron administration's move a "dishonest" negotiating tactic.

"You introduce something that’s unacceptable, and then you withdraw it," she said, adding "Nothing justifies this reform."

Mr. Macron has insisted that his retirement plan represents a fair, rational response to the new world of work, where careers are interrupted and French citizens no longer stay in the same job for life.

The plan would replace the current system of 42 different pension regimes, most tailored to match individual professions, with a single, points-based system that will be the same for everybody. Workers would accumulate points, then cash them in at the end. Bus drivers in Toulouse would get the same retirement benefits as those in Paris — not now the case, as the Paris system has some of the country’s most generous benefits. -NYT

As the New York Times notes, "the government’s concession is unlikely to end either the strike or the demonstrations," as "The more militant unions — and the ones most heavily represented in the railways and the Paris subway — are demanding that Mr. Macron abandon his entire reform plan."

"We’ve got to continue to mobilize, until they pull the whole plan, pure and simple," said French Parliamentarian Eric Coquerel from the far-left France Unbowed Party.

In terms of something more dramatic, Francis could steal a page from St. John Paul II’s playbook and dispatch personal emissaries to both Tehran and Washington, urging them to show restraint, just as the Polish pope did with Baghdad and Washington in 2003 in an effort to prevent war in Iraq. Obviously that effort failed, but the fact it didn’t work once doesn’t mean it never will.

Even bolder, Francis could announce his intention to visit the Middle East, with the idea being to convene Iranian and U.S. officials along with other regional players in an effort to promote dialogue and peaceful solutions. One option for a venue would be Lebanon, a country Francis promised to visit as far back as 2017, which has close ties to Iran but also a decent working relationship with the U.S. Lebanon also features one of the largest Catholic populations in the Middle East, making it a natural for a papal foray.

More than a dozen Saudi servicemen training at US military installations will be expelled from the United States after a review that followed the deadly shooting last month at a Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida, multiple sources told CNN.

The Saudis are not accused of aiding the 21-year-old Saudi Air Force second lieutenant who killed three American sailors in the December shooting, two sources said, but some are said to have connections to extremist movements, according to a person familiar with the situation.

A number are also accused of possessing child pornography, according to a defense official and the person familiar with the situation. Spokespeople for the FBI and Justice Department declined to comment.

About a dozen Saudi trainees at the Pensacola base had been confined to their quarters as the FBI investigated the shooting as a potential terror attack, and the Pentagon initiated a review of all Saudi military trainees in the country, numbering around 850 students.

The Justice Department is expected to conclude that the Pensacola shooting was in fact an act of terrorism, according to a US official.
