Political tensions unravel plan to convert Iranian nuclear site to civilian uses

A complicated effort to convert an Iranian military site into a civilian research center has hit a major snag. On 5 December, Russia’s TVEL nuclear fuel company announced it has suspended work to produce stable isotopes for medicine and research at the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant, a once-clandestine nuclear site near Iran’s holy city of Qom.

The project’s suspension is the latest casualty of the gradual unraveling of the nuclear deal that world powers struck with Iran in 2015 to deter it from pursuing nuclear weapons. After the United States pulled out of the agreement in May 2018, the other parties sought to preserve the accord, formally called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). But discussions foundered, prompting Iran to resume some nuclear activities the agreement had curtailed.

The JCPOA had prohibited using equipment at Fordow to enrich uranium for 15 years. The deal called for developing one wing of the two-wing, bunkerlike facility, which sits under a mountain, as an international physics center. But that concept that gained little traction as signatories puzzled over what might be installed in the cramped space. Ultimately, Iran moved on its own to install instrumentation for an analytical laboratory dubbed the Material Engineering Development and National Research Center.

Work in the other wing has hewed more closely to the JCPOA’s terms, which called for reconfiguring 348 IR-1 centrifuges at Fordow to produce stable isotopes. In a pilot effort that began in 2017, TVEL experts in recent months had converted 11 centrifuges to enrich isotopes of two elements: xenon and tellurium. “It was running under the radar, but progress was being made,” says Richard Johnson, an analyst with the Nuclear Threat Initiative in Washington, D.C., who previously worked on JCPOA implementation at the U.S. Department of State. Slowing TVEL’s painstaking work was uranium contamination leftover from the enrichment activities predating the nuclear deal. Nevertheless, Johnson says, in JCPOA partner meetings Russia had shared ambitious plans to convert IR-1’s to produce a range of stable isotopes that could be used in research and disease treatment.

Those plans are now on hold. In its latest move to distance itself from the JCPOA, Iran on 6 November resumed enriching uranium hexafluoride gas at Fordow, producing material with a level of the fissile isotope uranium-235 suitable for commercial power reactors. (Weapons require a higher level of enrichment.) The U.S. State Department then declared that starting 15 December, civilian projects at Fordow—for now only the stable isotope production—would no longer be exempt from punitive sanctions.

In announcing the project’s suspension, TVEL declared that it was “technologically impossible” to carry out stable isotope production in the same room as uranium enrichment. “We are taking a break now,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told TASS, the government news agency, on 7 December. He explained that experts are reexamining how the project might yet be revived—and what sanction-related penalties Russia might incur if it were to resume. “We don’t abandon the project,” he said.

An Indian counter-terrorism unit has named 11 suspects it says were involved in organizing religious courses which called for “jihad” to establish “Islamic rule” in India, carrying out a wave of arrests in the state of Tamil Nadu.

The suspects “conspired and conducted religious classes with the objective of establishing Islamic rule in India, through violent jihad and promoting unlawful activities,” India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) said in a statement on Wednesday.

The accused were charged with criminal conspiracy for their role in the religious courses, and most have already been taken into custody as part of an ongoing investigation, the agency added.

Dubbed the “Ansarullah case” – or “Supporters of God” in Arabic – the probe was first opened last July, when investigators uncovered a burgeoning terror cell with links to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The cell proselytized a violent message through courses on how to wage “jihad” and create an Islamic “caliphate.” The group was also thought to have collected funds to finance a terror operation in India.

Police raids in both India and the UAE last year led to the arrest of 16 suspects, five of which were thought to have ties to the notorious Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorist outfit. It is unclear whether any of the 11 named in Wednesday’s charge sheet were affiliated with any other known militant groups.

Don’t fall for the propaganda, though: America’s military forces aren’t being deployed abroad to protect our freedoms here at home. Rather, they’re being used to guard oil fields, build foreign infrastructure and protect the financial interests of the corporate elite. In fact, the United States military spends about $81 billion a year just to protect oil supplies around the world.

The reach of America’s military empire includes close to 800 bases in as many as 160 countries, operated at a cost of more than $156 billion annually. As Vine reports, “Even US military resorts and recreation areas in places like the Bavarian Alps and Seoul, South Korea, are bases of a kind. Worldwide, the military runs more than 170 golf courses.”

This is how a military empire occupies the globe.

Already, American military servicepeople are being deployed to far-flung places in the Middle East and elsewhere in anticipation of the war drums being sounded over Iran.

This Iran crisis, salivated over by the neocons since prior to the Iraq War and manufactured by war hawks who want to jumpstart the next world war, has been a long time coming.

On New Year’s Day 2020, Twitter account @HindsightFiles began posting documents from data firm Cambridge Analytica (CA) which expose the extensive infrastructure used to manipulate voters on a global scale.

More than 100,000 documents are said to be released in the coming months, revealing Cambridge Analytica’s activity in a shocking 68 countries, including elections in Malaysia, Kenya, and Brazil. The Guardian reported that the documents come from Brittany Kaiser, a former employee of Cambridge Analytica who turned whistleblower and star of the documentary The Great Hack.

Kaiser told the Guardian:

“I’m very fearful about what is going to happen in the U.S. election later this year, and I think one of the few ways of protecting ourselves is to get as much information out there as possible.”

The latest CA whistleblower has said the dumps will contain previously unreleased emails, project plans, case studies, and negotiations. The HindsightFiles twitter account has posted data on the relationship between Cambridge Analytica and John Bolton, former National Security Adviser to the Trump administration. In 2013, the John Bolton Super PAC paid Cambridge Analytica $650,000 for voter data analysis and digital video ad targeting.

The documents provide more details on that relationship, including using psychographics to play on voters hopes and fears. Psychographics is a methodology which focuses on consumers psychological attributes. Research firms attempt to develop a psychographic profile on various segments of the population by studying personality, opinions, interests, attitudes, values, and behaviors.

The FBI has asked Apple for assistance unlocking two iPhones that belonged to the Saudi gunman who killed three U.S. sailors at Naval Air Station Pensacola last month. A letter from FBI General Counsel Dana Boente to Apple on Monday said that the agency has been unable to access the phones owned by Mohammed Saeed Alshamrani, NBC News reported.

'Investigators are actively engaging in efforts to 'guess' the relevant passcodes but so far have been unsuccessful,' the letter said. Apple's encryption software is written so that the company itself is unable to access locked iPhones without the passcode in most cases, and the company has clashed with the FBI in previous high-profile cases. Apple on Monday said the company had been working with the government.

'We have the greatest respect for law enforcement and have always worked cooperatively to help in their investigations,' Apple said in a statement. 'When the FBI requested information from us relating to this case a month ago, we gave them all of the data in our possession and we will continue to support them with the data we have available.'

Alshamrani was killed by a sheriff's deputy during the attack on December 6. Complicating matters for investigators, he apparently fired a round from his Glock 9mm into one of his phones before he was taken down. The gun was legally purchased using a loophole that allows foreign nationals to purchase guns for hunting. The FBI most famously clashed with Apple over iPhone encryption in the case of the 2016 San Bernadino shooting. The FBI sought and obtained a court order demanding that Apple write software that would crack into the shooter Syed Farook's phone. Then at the last minute, the bureau announced that it had cracked into the phone with the help of an unnamed third party vendor. 'In that case, the iPhone was found only to contain mundane work information, and nothing related to the shooting.'

In the letter on Monday, the FBI said its agents have sought help from other federal agencies, as well as from experts in foreign countries and 'familiar contacts in the third-party vendor community.' That is possibly a reference to the undisclosed company that helped crack the San Bernadino shooter's phone.

U.S. officials have intercepted chatter and received confirmation that terrorist leaders in Iraq have been fleeing the region and have gone into hiding fearing United States intelligence capabilities after the successful airstrike that killed Iranian Quds Force leader Qassem Soleimani, according to multiple sources that spoke to SaraACarter.com. Soleimani, the leader of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force, was killed early Friday morning as he stepped off his plane and headed to the SUV at the Baghdad Airport in Iraq. The U.S. developed extraordinary actionable intelligence to target the most wanted terrorist in the world and it was a ‘precision strike’ that caught the Iranian government off guard, said a White House official, who spoke on background due to the sensitive nature of their work.

For the past two decades, U.S. and Western intelligence officials have worked to monitor Soleimani’s movements, as well as his planned attacks on overseas assets, U.S. troops and civilians. He was a designated terrorist by the United States but previous administrations, including both Obama and the Bush administrations, stayed clear of targeting him directly fearing possible retaliation from Iran or escalation of war. For twenty years Soleimani operated with impunity directing Iran’s financial purse to terrorist proxies around the world, while also planning Iranian military strategy in the region. His death was an extraordinary blow to the Iranian regime.

During the Obama administration he was frequently reported to be traveling throughout the Iraqi region despite sanctions limiting his travel and was working closely with Iranian allies in the Iraq government, said a U.S. official, who works in the region. Under President Donald Trump the tables have turned. It was apparent that the president was ready to take the action necessary when U.S. intelligence officials informed him that Soleimani was in the planning stages of a strategic attack targeting Americans that was expected to come within days, said a White House official, with knowledge of the airstrike. Trump’s decisive decision to act on the intelligence he was given and to target Soleimani saved countless American lives, the official added. The White House official added that shortly after the airstrike that killed Soleimani information began to surface that other terrorist leaders in the region were ‘fleeing,’ and others had gone into hiding. And on Wednesday, as Trump addressed the nation, woven into his words was the warning to terrorists in the region that Soleimani was only one of many terror leaders U.S. officials are monitoring in effort to prevent attacks on U.S. assets, the homeland and Americans overseas.
