Barr and 'Five Eyes' pledge unity on 'emerging threats' — but questions on Huawei and ISIS remain

The so-called "Five Eyes" nations agreed on a lot coming out of their security summit in London this week, but didn't end up with concrete plans for two major challenges: the security threat posed by Chinese tech firm Huawei, and the stalemate over how to deal with thousands of foreign-born Islamic State fighters held in Syria.

The five English-speaking member nations that comprise the intelligence-sharing alliance agreed on “emerging threats” including child exploitation, web encryption, extremist recruitment online, and terrorism. They agreed the exploitation of children online must be addressed more effectively, that violent extremists must not be allowed to exploit the internet, that tech firm encryption designed to keep law enforcement out could threaten public safety, and that they must remain vigilant against ISIS.

And the countries committed to combating foreign election interference, ensuring drones aren’t misused, improving information sharing, and cooperating on cyber threats.

“The Five Eyes partnership is vital. Throughout this week, we have had substantive, frank, and positive discussions surrounding our shared duty to protect public safety,” said Attorney General William Barr, who represented the United States in the summit with officials from the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

But comprehensive solutions for dealing with ISIS and Huawei appeared elusive.

The alliance pledged to deal with ISIS detainees, noting the collapse of the caliphate and recognizing that “some of its members continue to pose a threat both in the region and more widely, whilst others are detained and best efforts must be made to bring them to justice.” There were some specifics: capacity building through the United Nations and the Counter Terrorism Forum; information sharing through Interpol and other databases to assist with terrorist identification; and the promotion of Battlefield Evidence best practices for investigations and cases.

But these efforts did not specifically address what to do with the thousands of foreign born ISIS fighters held in Iraq and Syria. Earlier this year, President Trump tweeted that the U.S. was asking countries like the U.K. to “to take back over 800 ISIS fighters that we captured in Syria and put them on trial.”

This photo is taken from Ky. 2141 in Moreland. The explotion shook the viewer's house and people in the area could feel the heat. (Naomi Hayes)

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office says the explosion happened in the are of Bowens Loop Road in the Moreland community near Junction City and Hustonville. U.S. 127 was closed in the area as a result, as emergency directors have set up a command center. At its peak, the flames reached approximately 300 feet in the air.

"It was impressive. It's tragic. We hope it doesn't get worse," Lincoln County Emergency Management Director Don Gilliam said.

The Lincoln County Coroner's Office confirms at least one person is dead. Several structures caught fire in the area of the Indian Camp subdivision. Those flames were extinguished Emergency managers say five others are injured, and up to seven people are still unaccounted for.

Emergency managers say a ruptured gas line was the cause of the explosion. Crews have been able to shut off the gas. Crews evacuated 75 people from the scene, and several others voluntarily evacuated. Some of those displaced went to New Hope Baptist Church for shelter. Some have since left the shelter and returned to their homes. Authorities are asking those who live in the area of Indian Camp who have not been accounted for to check in at the church.

GOP power play clears path to approve asylum crackdown in Senate committee

The Senate Judiciary Committee exploded in acrimony Thursday ahead of a major vote on a GOP bill to try to solve the border crisis, with Democrats accusing Republicans of defying the rules to force the vote.

Chairman Lindsey Graham kicked off the meeting by chiding Democrats for refusing to step up with solutions. He then immediately forced a showdown to set a firm time for holding a vote, short-circuiting Democrats’ chances to use parliamentary tactics to try to stop a vote.

He was compelled to act after Democrats used a boycott last week to halt action on the bill.

Democrats proclaimed outrage over the moves.

“Why even have rules if they can be broken whenever it’s expedient to do so?” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the ranking Democrat on the committee.

Mr. Graham wasn’t phased, saying he wouldn’t allow Democratic tricks to derail his effort to find a solution to the border crisis.

A fellow patriot just had an "ah-ha" moment and shared some thoughts with me. These are all theories and there's no sauce but for memories of historical events, so take this as you will.

If Comey, McCabe, and company are not getting charged by the DOJ leading to a case in civilian criminal courts, then why? Is it to stay out of the way for military tribunals? Q told us to expect such actions. If military tribunals are the preferred venue and action, then the origins of all this must involve an enemy to the US, perhaps a foreign power? Who has actively worked against us in the world - but under the radar, behind the scenes. If it's not Soros, then could it be China?

Think about the things we do know about China.

Feinstein seems to have a cozier than kosher relationship with them.

Google seems to have a close relationship with them (and if Google does, could other tech companies be cooperating?).

Apple gets most of it's manufacturing done in China. How can their proprietary tech stay secret in Chinese factories and not make it to other Chinese research facilities.

What about Huawei putting spy chips in tech gear sold around the world?
