NSA contractor sentenced to prison for huge theft of classified U.S. data

(Reuters) - A former National Security Agency contractor was sentenced in Maryland to nine years in prison on Friday for stealing huge amounts of classified material from U.S. intelligence agencies over two decades though officials never found proof he shared it with anyone.

Harold Martin, 54, also received three years of supervised release from U.S. District Judge Richard Bennett in Baltimore after pleading guilty to willful retention of national defense information, the Justice Department said in a statement.

In what officials have called perhaps the biggest breach of U.S. classified information on record, Martin was accused of stealing from the NSA, CIA, U.S. Cyber Command and National Reconnaissance Office starting in 1996. The data he was accused of stealing included 2014 NSA reports detailing intelligence information “regarding foreign cyber issues” that contained targeting information and “foreign cyber intrusion techniques.”

The list of pilfered documents also included an NSA user’s guide for an intelligence-gathering tool and a 2007 file with details about specific daily operations, the indictment against him said.

“Instead of respecting the trust given to him by the American people, Martin violated that trust and put our nation’s security at risk,” Assistant Attorney General John Demers said. “This sentence will hold Mr. Martin accountable for his dangerous and unlawful actions.”

Prosecutors have said Martin’s actions risked the disclosure of top secret information to America’s enemies. One of their allegations was that Martin talked online with people in Russian and other languages but they never found proof he shared stolen information with anyone.

His defense team portrayed him as an eccentric hoarder. Martin’s attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.

From 1993 to 2016, Martin was employed with at least seven firms and was assigned as a contractor to work in several government agencies, the Justice Department said.

His positions, which involved work on highly classified projects involving government computer systems, gave him various security clearances that routinely provided him access to top-secret information, it said.

The government has not said what, if anything, Martin did with the highly sensitive material that, according to the court documents, he hoarded at his home in Glen Burnie, Maryland and his vehicle.

Martin was working for Booz Allen Hamilton Holding Corp when he was taken into custody in 2016. Booz Allen also had employed Edward Snowden, who leaked a trove of secret files to news organizations in 2013 that exposed vast domestic and international surveillance operations carried out by the NSA.

When FBI agents raided Martin’s home south of Baltimore they found stacks of documents and electronic storage devices amounting to 50 terabytes of files, according to prosecutors.

Three muh white supremacists sentenced to prison over Charlottesville rally violence

Three members of a white supremacist group were sentenced on Friday to prison time over violence at a 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., as well as other rallies in California.

Benjamin Daley, Michael Miselis and Thomas Gillen each received a sentence between two and three years, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia said in a statement Friday.

Daley was sentenced to 37 months in prison, while Gillen received 33 months and Miselis received 27 months. Each man is between the ages of 25 and 30. A fourth defendant, Cole Evan White, will be sentenced at a later date, the statement said.

“These defendants, motivated by hateful ideology, incited and committed acts of violence in Charlottesville, as well at other purported political rallies in California,” U.S. Attorney Thomas Cullen said in the statement. “They were not interested in peaceful protest or lawful First Amendment expression; instead, they intended to provoke and engage in street battles with those that they perceived as their enemies.”

The men were members of the Rise Above Movement, a white supremacist group that no longer exists, according to officials. The men attended two rallies in California as well as the August 2017 Charlottesville rally, where Daley and Miselis were found to have assaulted protesters and other individuals, the Justice Department said.

“Violence erupted among the crowd, with some punching, kicking, spraying chemical irritants and swinging torches,” the attorney’s office said. They “collectively pushed, punched, kicked, chocked, head-butted, and otherwise assaulted several individuals, resulting in a riot.”

Special Agent in Charge David Archey of the FBI said the sentences “demonstrate the U.S. Government’s intolerance of the use of violence, by anyone, to infringe upon the right of others to assemble peacefully.”

Earlier this month, the man already sentenced to life in prison on federal hate crime charges for killing one person and injuring dozens more during the Charlottesville rally was further sentenced to life plus 419 years on state murder and wounding charges.

Equifax exec's inside trade shame: Software boss sentenced for mega-hack stock profit.

An Equifax executive – who knew the biz had been hacked before it was made public and banked over $75,000 in stock trades using this inside knowledge – has avoided jail.

Sudhakar Reddy Bonthu, formerly a software product development manager for Equifax’s Global Consumer Services team, admitted to learning that hackers have made off with the personal records of 46 million people in August 2017, and days later exploited that information in share trades.

The 44-year-old was sentenced by a US federal district court in Georgia this week to eight months of home confinement, fined $50,000, and made to give back his ill-gotten gains.

Bonthu, of Atlanta, had been asked to develop an online portal where people could check if their data had been swiped by miscreants from an unnamed company, but he figured out it was his employer that had been ransacked by cyber-crooks. He was told the announcement about the security breach would be made on September 6, and decided to see if he couldn't turn a quick buck from this insider info.

Bonthu confessed to buying put options on Equifax stock on September 1, something he knew to be dodgy because Equifax forbids its employees from buying options on corporate stock. Two weeks later, when he sold the options after details of the hack were disclosed to the public, the falling stock price had netted him more than $75,000 in profit.

“Bonthu intentionally took advantage of information entrusted to him in order to make a quick profit,” said US Attorney Byung Pak. “The integrity of the stock markets and the confidence of investors are impaired by those who use nonpublic information for personal gain.”

Almost as soon as the announcement of the cyber-heist was made, there were rumors of insider trading. The firm's chief financial officer and three others in senior management sold $1.8m in shares shortly before the disclosure, although Equifax said an internal investigation showed that there was no collusion or insider trading on their part.

The US Department of Justice is also probing the matter, and charges have been brought against Jun Ying, CIO of the US information solutions unit at Equifax, accusing him of dumping nearly a million dollars worth of stock just before the announcement.

“If we don’t hold company insiders to the same rules that govern regular investors, the public’s confidence in the stock market erodes,” said Chris Hacker, special agent in charge of FBI Atlanta. “The FBI will do everything in its power to hold accountable those who choose to take advantage of their inside knowledge.” ®

Former National Security Agency contractor Harold ‘Hal’ Martin was sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty in March to willful retention of national defense information.

Martin admitted to stealing top-secret documents over a 20-year period and storing them at his Glen Burnie home- some, in an unlocked storage shed.

Woman Gets 2 Years for Spending $300,000 in City Money for Hex on Ex

A former New York City human resources worker was sentenced to two years in prison Wednesday for allegedly stealing $300,000 to put a voodoo hex on her ex-boyfriend.

Eliana Bauta, 36, was sentenced in a Manhattan Federal Court this week after she was caught stealing taxpayer funds from a program to help “needy New Yorkers,” reports state.

Bauta reportedly gave a portion of the stolen money to friends and family and also allegedly paid a “supernatural specialist” to put a spell on her ex-boyfriend, prosecutors said.

Bauta said she blames her actions on “mental illness.”

However, after about ten feet, the man loses his grip and plummets to the ground some 20 feet below him.

El Chapo Disappeared for Two Days. Now He’s at the Supermax

After being sentenced to life in prison, the drug lord was whisked away in secret. Two days later, he arrived at the United States’ highest security prison.

Throughout his long and bloody career, the drug kingpin known as El Chapo has proved to be a master of escape, breaking out of two Mexican prisons to continue his reign leading the Sinaloa cartel.

Within hours of being sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday, the notorious Mexican crime lord, Joaquín Guzmán Loera, was whisked away from a federal jail in Manhattan and transferred to an undisclosed location, his lawyers said.

Mr. Guzman’s whereabouts remained a mystery for two days, even for his lawyers. But late Friday afternoon, the Bureau of Prisons confirmed that Mr. Guzmán had been taken to the nation’s most forbidding federal prison, the United States Penitentiary Administrative Maximum Facility, or ADX, in Florence, Colo.

The intense secrecy surrounding Mr. Guzmán’s transfer to another prison reflected the anxiety over his Houdini-like ability to engineer escapes in the past and the deep financial resources at the disposal of the cartel. (Prosecutors say a “conservative” estimate of Mr. Guzmán’s career earnings is about $12.7 billion.)

Mr. Guzmán had been last seen being escorted from Federal District Court in Brooklyn by United States marshals at about 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday, after Judge Brian M. Cogan sentenced him to life in prison plus 30 years on murder, drug and money laundering charges.

NSA contractor sentenced to prison for huge theft of classified U.S. data

A former National Security Agency contractor was sentenced in Maryland to nine years in prison on Friday for stealing huge amounts of classified material from U.S. intelligence agencies over two decades though officials never found proof he shared it with anyone.

Harold Martin, 54, also received three years of supervised release from U.S. District Judge Richard Bennett in Baltimore after pleading guilty to willful retention of national defense information, the Justice Department said in a statement.

In what officials have called perhaps the biggest breach of U.S. classified information on record, Martin was accused of stealing from the NSA, CIA, U.S. Cyber Command and National Reconnaissance Office starting in 1996. The data he was accused of stealing included 2014 NSA reports detailing intelligence information “regarding foreign cyber issues” that contained targeting information and “foreign cyber intrusion techniques.”

The list of pilfered documents also included an NSA user’s guide for an intelligence-gathering tool and a 2007 file with details about specific daily operations, the indictment against him said.

“Instead of respecting the trust given to him by the American people, Martin violated that trust and put our nation’s security at risk,” Assistant Attorney General John Demers said. “This sentence will hold Mr. Martin accountable for his dangerous and unlawful actions.”

Prosecutors have said Martin’s actions risked the disclosure of top secret information to America’s enemies. One of their allegations was that Martin talked online with people in Russian and other languages but they never found proof he shared stolen information with anyone.

His defense team portrayed him as an eccentric hoarder. Martin’s attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.

From 1993 to 2016, Martin was employed with at least seven firms and was assigned as a contractor to work in several government agencies, the Justice Department said.

His positions, which involved work on highly classified projects involving government computer systems, gave him various security clearances that routinely provided him access to top-secret information, it said.
