Excess mortality rates go unexplained in Nova Scotia

'Unexpectedly high numbers of people are dying in an untimely fashion,' infectious diseases researcher Tara Moriarty told CBC.

Recently released, although long overdue, data from Statistics Canada shows a marked increase in deaths from the expected number, known as excess mortality.

Statistics Canada's excess mortality tracker was updated with data for Nova Scotia and a handful of other provinces for September and October 2022.

During those two months, data indicates 304 more deaths than expected in NS.

However, though unable to explain the high number of extra deaths, Moriarty told CBC she is sure what didn't cause them, telling CBC that "without an explanation, purveyors of COVID-19 misinformation will argue that COVID-19 vaccines are to blame."

Moriarty suspects opioids as a cause of the extra deaths.

The province claimed just 63 cases of opioid poisoning in 2022.

Motion to dismiss three Ontario doctors from regulatory stranglehold proceeds

An Ontario lawyer is rebuking the unrelenting grip governing bodies have on private medical practices in the province, condemning their recommendations as not being backed by the force of the law.

Michael Alexander, legal counsel for three Ontario doctors currently facing prosecution by their medical regulator, has put forward a motion to argue that continued investigation into his clients must end.

The hearing will be publicly streamed via YouTube on March 10 at noon ET.

The refusal of these physicians “to follow recommendations is not an offence under the Medicine Act,” a recent press release by Alexander states.

The release further details how the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) placed three COVID-related restrictions on medical practice in the province:

Backed by the threat of discipline action, doctors were forbidden from saying anything that conflicted with public health policies and recommendations, writing medical exemptions for Covid-19 injections and prescribing alternative medications approved by Health Canada for the prevention and treatment of Covid-19.

The CPSO admitted during a previous motion hearing that these guidelines and recommendations were never legislated laws or regulations. Alexander argues in favour of a dismissal of his clients, stating that the “College had no right to enforce its Covid-19 recommendations as if they had the force of law.”

Alexander further condemns the actions of the CPSO in the release:

The College has been the enforcement arm of the provincial government during the so-called pandemic, and has been preventing Ontario's 31,000 doctors from providing over 14 million patients with crucial health information and cutting-edge treatments relating to Covid-19. If we are successful in the upcoming motion hearing, we will break the harmful and oppressive stranglehold the College has had on the practice of medicine in Ontario. And we will assist other health care professionals, such as Jordan Peterson, who have been fighting similar battles against their own regulatory bodies.

Alexander expressed the importance of public scrutiny in how the college conducts itself in a previous interview with Rebel News.

787 excess deaths in BC during November 2022

Recent data published by Statistics Canada shows excess deaths during three of four weeks between November 5 and November 26, 2022.

Excess mortality is observed when there are more deaths than expected during a specific period.

The province of Alberta experienced a similar spike in deaths over nearly the same period. Alberta's data, however, included five weeks ending December 3, 2022.

British Columbia, meanwhile, reported 787 excess deaths during the same five-week time frame as Alberta.

Nova Scotia's most recent data, reflective of the first 10 months of 2022, indicates 840 more deaths than expected. The rise in excess deaths in Nova Scotia remains officially unexplained.

Canada’s state broadcaster paid staff $16 million in bonuses during a year of economic struggle for many Canadians, says a new report.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation reported on Thursday that CBC paid annual bonuses to more than 1,100 staff last year – adding up to an average of roughly $14,000 per bonus.

“Canadians are missing meals while many CBC staffers aren’t even missing bonuses,” said federation director Franco Terrazzano.

In the report, 1,142 bonuses added up to more than $16,000,000 – and the number of CBC employees being paid annual bonuses reportedly doubled since 2015.

According to The Canadian Taxpayer Federation (CTF), these bonuses were inappropriate because taxpayers – facing economic pressure – are forced to foot the bill.

The CTF also said that during the first nine months of CBC’s 2022-2023 fiscal year, roughly 80% of its workforce received a pay raise.

The news comes weeks after the CTF reported the number of CBC employees earning more than $100,000 doubled since 2015.

The Jesuits of Canada have released a list of priests and brothers they say were credibly accused of sexually abusing minors over the past 70 years.

The Jesuits, a religious order of the Roman Catholic Church, released the list of 27 names Monday following an audit that began in 2020 that looked at documents going back to the 1950s.

Of the men named, all but three are dead.

The order says in a statement that the release of the names is part of the Jesuits’ effort to promote transparency, accountability, justice and healing for survivors of abuse.

In most cases, the abuse came to light after the alleged abuser had died, with some cases never reaching criminal or civil litigation.

In a statement, Rev. Erik Oland says despite the exhaustive review, other names may be added to the list in the future.

In a statement, spokesperson Adrienne Vaupshas says Freeland met on Monday with Superintendent of Financial Institutions Peter Routledge.

According to the statement, Freeland has also convened meetings with the heads of national and regional Canadian financial institutions, which were attended by Routledge and Bank of Canada representatives.

Vaupshas says "significant structural and regulatory safeguards" are in place and that Canadian financial institutions "are stable and resilient."

Routledge has emphasized the limited nature of the crisis in Canada and that Silicon Valley Bank doesn't hold commercial or individual deposits in Canada.

Calgary city council has approved two administrative recommendations to limit drag queen story hours protests, citing an increase in “transphobia and homophobia.”

City administration’s urgent recommendations were discussed at a lengthy city council meeting on Tuesday — days after a Calgary pastor was arrested and charged for protesting a drag queen story hour at a public library and following another protest held after a trans woman allegedly exposed male genitals to a teenage girl at a public pool.

Calgary City Manager David Duckworth said “the conduct of a few” are creating an environment where access to publicly available services is compromised due to safety concerns. He said the bylaw is not intending to prohibit protests.

Calgarians could begin recalling municipal politicians this Spring

A motion before Calgary City Hall could allow residents to issue petitions to recall municipal politicians as soon as April 22, 2023.

The policy, which was devised to meet obligations outlines by Alberta’s Recall Act, would allow Calgarians to launch petitions to have specific City Council members, including the mayor removed from office.

The process would require the filing of a $500 application by organizers of a petition. To successfully recall a politician, 40% of the voter population of a specific ward would be required.

In the case of removing a mayor, that would mean 40% of the city would have to be a signatory on the petition. Continue…

The Conservatives have rejected a pro-life candidate seeking the party’s nomination in the Ontario Conservative stronghold of Oxford, True North has learned.

Gerrit Van Dorland, a long-time Conservative activist from Otterville, Ontario, was disqualified in a 3-2 vote by the Conservatives’ National Candidate Selection Committee Tuesday evening.

According to a statement from pro-life political action group RightNow, Van Dorland was targeted for his beliefs.

“The party gave no reason for Gerrit’s disqualification,” said an email sent by RightNow co-founder Scott Hayward to the organization’s supporters. “The real issue is that Gerrit is pro-life and more than likely to win the nomination.”
