A hoax kidnapping scam originating in Mexico is targeting Western Pennsylvanians, FBI’s Pittsburgh office warned Tuesday.

Over the past week, the FBI said more than 450 calls were made by someone living in Mexico to people in the area who have 724 area codes.

The scam was recently uncovered during a joint investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies alerted to the numerous bogus calls, said FBI spokeswoman Catherine Policicchio.

The FBI said investigators have determined people in Mexico are scanning social media accounts for people traveling in the Southwest border area from this region.

“They are then calling the travelers’ loved ones in our area. During each of the calls, the caller states the person’s loved one is in danger or has been kidnapped,” the FBI said.

The caller then requests victims to send money as soon as possible.

Policicchio said the agency wants to remind people to never provide any financial information to strangers over the phone. The agency also asks the public to alert family members to the fraud.

The FBI noted the telephone scammers can be convincing but their actions are criminal.

The agency recommends anyone receiving such a call should remain calm and resist the pressure to act quickly. Residents should acquire as much information as possible, including the phone number, if possible, to forward to local authorities.

However, the FBI recommends no one should wire money, particularly overseas, based on requests or threats made by strangers over the phone or via email.

Policicchio said the local FBI office is continuing to work with other local, federal, state and international law enforcement agencies to locate and arrest the people involved in the ongoing scam.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) disclosed to a congressional office that migrants flying without proper identification can use an arrest warrant as an alternate form of identification when presenting to airport security, according to a letter the Daily Caller News Foundation exclusively obtained.

Responding to Republican Texas Rep. Lance Gooden’s Dec. 15 inquiry about migrants flying across the country, TSA Administrator David Pekoske explained that certain Department of Homeland Security (DHS) documents may be considered acceptable forms of alternate identification for non-citizens, including a “Warrant for Arrest of Alien” and a “Warrant of Removal/Deportation.”

“TSA’s response confirms the Biden Administration is knowingly putting our national security at risk,” Gooden told the DCNF. “Unknown and unvetted immigrants shouldn’t even be in the country, much less flying without proper identification.”

“TSA is committed to ensuring that all travelers, regardless of immigration status, are pre-screened before they arrive to the airport, have their pre-screening status and identification verified at security checkpoints, and receive appropriate screening based on risk before entering the sterile area of the airport,” Pekoske wrote.

Animal Sacrifice Sees Drunk Priest Allegedly Behead Man Instead of Goat

A drunk priest in India allegedly killed a man during an animal sacrifice for Sankranthi celebrations on Sunday (January 16.)

Local news outlets reported that the incident happened by mistake. The victim, a 35-year-old man named Suresh, was holding the goat meant for sacrifice in Valasapalli village, in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.

The accused, named Chalapathi, was supposed to carry out the animal sacrifice and cut off the goat's head.

However, the priest ended up using the knife to cut the throat of Suresh instead. Several local reports said the victim was beheaded.

The United News of India (UNI) news agency reported that Suresh left behind his wife and two children.

According to UNI, the sacrifice happened as part of the animal festival Kanuma, also known as Pasuvula Panduga, which happens on the third day of the Sankranthi in Andhra Pradesh.

It was organized at the local Yellamma temple, dedicated to the patron goddess of Andhra Pradesh.

Local reports said that according to the police, Chalapathi was drunk at the time of the sacrifice and missed his target.

Suresh was bleeding profusely and rushed to Madanpelle government hospital where he was declared dead. Local reports said that Chalapathi has been arrested by the police.

Newsweek has contacted Chittoor district police for a comment.

Sankranti is a Hindu festival dedicated to worship the Sun god, Lord Surya. The festival marks the day the sun transits into Makara Rashi or Capricorn zodiac.

According to the solar calendar, it falls on January 14 every year, however celebrations can continue over several days. The festival also marks the end of winter, marking longer sunlight hours, and the beginning of a new harvest season.

According to Asia Highlights, people tend to celebrate the festival by going to temples and taking a cleansing bath in the Ganges River.

According to local reports, some people in the village sacrifice animals during celebrations.

In India, unnecessary pain or harm inflicted on animals is a punishable offence, however this does not include the sacrificing of animals during religious festivals.

The sacrificing of animals in Hinduism however, is gradually becoming unpopular. The practise is beginning to be eliminated by some government policies and protests from animal welfare organizations.

The regions where animal sacrifice is still practised include states of North Eastern India such as Assam and surrounding states, West Bengal, Orissa and parts of Bihar.
