NATO ally warns US about ‘tarnished reputation’

Ankara has chastised Secretary of State Antony Blinken for Washington’s defense of Israel, Hurriyet has reported

Türkiye has told the US that its stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict has both tarnished its reputation and put the entire world community in a tough spot, Hurriyet reported on Tuesday.

According to the Turkish daily, Ankara conveyed that message during a meeting between Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday, which concerned the current crisis in the Middle East.

The sit-down came amid heightened tensions between Türkiye and Israel, Washington’s key ally in the region, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recentlyaccusing the Jewish state of “war crimes” in Gaza and denouncing its ground assault as “an open, vicious massacre.”

Israel maintains that it has no intention of harming the civilian population in the Palestinian enclave, stressing that its main objective is to defeat Hamas, which launched a surprise attack on the country on October 7.

Hurriyet claimed that Fidan and his delegation “clearly explained” to Blinken what was happening in Gaza, and that the US vow to stand by Israel while refusing to call for a ceasefire, was “putting everyone in trouble.”

“You are also putting your own image in trouble because you are seen as the patron of the crimes committed by Israel,” the delegation reportedly said.

Following the meeting, the two sides did not issue a joint statement or hold a joint press conference. Speaking to reporters, however, Blinken said that he had a very “productive” conversation with Fidan, including about the need to “significantly expand humanitarian assistance” to Gaza and avoid escalating the conflict.

His remarks came after US President Joe Biden called for a humanitarian “pause” in hostilities. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later signaled that his government was open to “little pauses” in the fighting.

After Hamas attacked Israel last month, the latter responded with air and missile strikes on Gaza while announcing a “complete siege” of the enclave. To date, the fighting has claimed the lives of more than 10,000 Palestinians, and more than 1,400 Israelis.

Meanwhile, Politico reported on Monday that a group of low- and mid-level US diplomats had urged the Biden administration to condemn Israel’s bombing of civilians and demand a ceasefire. They reportedly argued that failure to do so “contributes to regional public perceptions that the United States is a biased and dishonest actor.”

BREAKING - GLOBAL WAR: Russia withdraws from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), and the United States says it will also suspend the operation of all CFE Treaty obligations between itself and every other State Party, effective December 7.

In a statement minutes ago, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan wrote, "Today, the Russian Federation withdrew from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE). The combination of Russia’s withdrawal from the CFE Treaty and its continuing full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine – another CFE State Party – has fundamentally altered circumstances that were essential to the CFE States Parties’ consent to be bound by the treaty, and radically transformed the obligations under the treaty. In light of this fundamental change of circumstances, the United States will suspend the operation of all CFE Treaty obligations between itself and every other State Party, effective December 7, consistent with our rights under international law.

"This decision to suspend our obligations under the CFE Treaty was taken in close consultation and coordination with our NATO Allies, many of whom are also CFE Treaty States Parties. A number of our CFE partners that are not members of NATO also support suspension of CFE Treaty obligations in response to Russia’s actions.

"As reflected in the statement issued at NATO Headquarters today, our Allies unanimously share our view that a situation where the United States and our NATO Allies continue to be militarily constrained by the CFE Treaty, while Russia – whose armed forces are the largest in Europe, and who continues to actively wage a war of aggression against Ukraine using the very forces the treaty aims to constrain – is not, would be unacceptable. Suspension of CFE obligations will strengthen the Alliance’s deterrence and defense capacity by removing restrictions that impact planning, deployments, and exercises – restrictions that no longer bind Russia after Moscow’s withdrawal.

"While Russia’s withdrawal from the CFE Treaty further demonstrates Moscow’s continued disregard for arms control, the United States, our NATO Allies, and our responsible partners remain committed to effective conventional arms control as a critical element of Euro-Atlantic security. On a recent CNN’s State of The Union episode, Democrat Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) made a statement seen by many as suggesting black voters are “too dumb” to fully understand political matters.

This comment has drawn controversy, as the representative was interpreting a recent poll showcasing the surge in popularity for former President Donald Trump among Black voters, traditionally a Democratic stronghold.

The poll suggested that, if an election were held today, former President Donald Trump would defeat Joe Biden, securing over 300 electoral votes. Data shows a significant shift of support from Black voters toward Trump. This support now stands at 22 percent for Trump, a figure that no Republican has seen in modern presidential politics.

However, instead of reflecting on why such a shift might be occurring or considering what the Democratic Party could do to regain trust, Rep. Crockett’s response appeared to belittle the intelligence of Black voters. She said:

Here’s the deal. Perception is reality.

And so when you look at the data that was provided in this poll, it talks about how people feel and when people decide whether they’re going to the poll or whether they’re not going to the poll, it’s all about how you feel in that moment. And so while the facts may not align with their feelings, their feelings are dictating their reality. Their reality is that they said that they feel better or they felt better when Trump was in office. But we’ve been trying to push back.

We’ve got some very popular African-American artists that are out here saying things like, “Oh, I got checks when Trump was in office. I want those checks again,” not understanding that really came from Congress.

So we’ve got a couple of things the perception issue, and then we also have an issue as it relates to civics in this country and people not understanding exactly how any of this works.

Crockett is suggesting that Black voters might be making decisions based on misperceptions or a lack of understanding of the political process.

Prominent figures and political commentators weighed in regarding Crockett’s comment.

American commentator and television presenter Tomi Lahren commented, “Is she saying that black voters are too dumb to understand what’s going on? Wow! This is bad.”

Twitter user Brandon Saario commented, “Crockett is sayingpeople are not smart enough to know how good things are.”

Another user wrote, “It’s the economy Crockett that’s effecting black votersnot feelings, High food prices gas rent interest rates alot of people homeless families can’t go out restaurant prices have doubled.”

(As a politician the mistake she made was thinking, she was black, so she could set the “black folks” straight because “they be too dumb” to understand the poll. They will never learn will they?)

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said presidential elections will not be held in the country next year, saying thatit would be "irresponsible" to do so during the ongoing war.

"We all understand that now, in wartime, when there are many challenges, it is utterly irresponsible to engage in topics related to an election in such a frivolous manner," Zelensky said in his nightly video address to the nation on Monday.

Prior to the war, Ukraine's presidential elections were scheduled for March 2024, but the country's constitution mandates that they cannot go ahead until any declaration of martial law is lifted, which is unlikely to happen in the near future. Ukraine was due to hold a parliamentary election in October.

Martial law in Ukraine, which must be extended every 90 days, is next set to expire on November 15. Zelensky first declared martial law on February 24, 2022, the day Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of his country.

"We need to recognize that this is a time for defense, a time for battle, upon which the fate of the state and its people depend… I believe that elections are not appropriate at this time," Zelensky said.

Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council Secretary Alexey Danilov has also said that "no elections can be held" under martial law in the country.

Days earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said during an online appearance at the World Policy Conference in the United Arab Emirates that Zelensky was weighing the pros and cons of a presidential vote in spring 2024.

"We are not closing this page. The president of Ukraine is considering and weighing the different pros and cons," said Kuleba.

Zelensky has said he would run for second term if an election proceeds.

The Ukrainian leader's approval rating in Ukraine remains near the record-highs set shortly after Russia's full-scale invasion of the country began, data from Gallup shows.

Respondents were surveyed in July and August and the data was released on October 16. A year and half after Putin's invasion, 81 percent said they approve of Zelensky, the survey showed.

The latest Gallup result remains near to a record-high approval rating of84 percentfrom September 2022.The polling firm does not state how many people were polled, but said support for Zelensky remains strong "across all demographic groups, geographic regions and income groups."

Who could have seen that coming...

Much like the rest of the world, after exuberant run-ups in the first half of the year, Korean equity markets plunged over 20% in the past three months... Clearly this is unacceptable and so, over the weekend, South Korean regulators unleashed a "short-selling ban" on equity investors... because blaming those nasty un-patriotic short-ers is easier than admitting 1) perhaps the valuation was extreme to start with and/or 2) there is an actual economic problem here.

The Financial Services Commission’s order to prohibit new short-selling positions on stocks in the Kospi 200 Index and Kosdaq 150 Index through the end of June 2024 left many market watchers surprised, with some observers saying that broad outright bans like this only make the market less transparent and therefore less attractive.

Note that the decision doesn’t impact existing positions.

The kneejerk reaction was - of course - a buying frenzy on Monday (Kospi up 5.7% - the best day since March 2020).

But, the move raised questions as Huh Jae-Hwan, an analyst at Eugene Investment & Securities, pointed out, it is “unusual” as authorities are comprehensively prohibiting short selling at a time when there is no major external risk.

As Bloomberg reports, South Korea had banned short selling during the Global Financial Crisis in 2008, amid the euro-zone debt crisis and the US sovereign downgrade in 2011, and then again during the start of the pandemic in 2020.And so, overnight (Tuesday in Korea), the equity market crashed, with KASDAQ Futs plunging over 7% at one point. So what did Korean regulators do? You can't make this up... The Korea Exchange temporarily issued its “sidecar” limit to halt sell orders for program trading.

“The ban may boost prices of a few specific stocks for a few days, but over the longer haul it will increase overall price volatility, reduce market liquidity and make pricing less efficient,” said Hyosung Kwon, an economist at Bloomberg Economics.

“Even worse, it could discourage investment and further deepen the discount on South Korea’s stocks, hurting the retail investors it was supposed to protect.”

How many more times do we have to see this "short-selling-ban" plan fail for regulators to realize it makes things worse not better.

“Banning short-selling is like removing a lighthouse during a storm,” said Kher Sheng Lee, Asia-Pacific co-head of the Alternative Investment Management Association, a global industry body whose members oversee more than $2.5 trillion of assets in hedge and private credit funds.

“It not only strips the market of its vital pricing signals but also dries up liquidity - the very lifeblood of trading. Such bans should be a last resort.”

Of course, the real reason for this move is far more simple... South Korea is set to conduct general elections for the National Assembly in April. “The chance of this ban being part of a strategy to win votes couldn’t be ruled out, considering how unpopular short-selling is among retail investors,” said Hong Sung-gul, professor of public administration at Kookmin University in Seoul.

President Donald Trump was the man of the moment on Saturday evening in Kissimmee, Florida, where he gave headlining remarks at the Florida Freedom Summit, capping off a night of conservative speeches.

The president was greeted by huge applause and cheers. He announced cheerily that he had “moments ago” filed to appear on the 2024 primary ballot in the Sunshine State. “With your help we’re going to WIN the Florida primary for the third straight time,” he declared.

He promised that with Florida’s help, “We’re going to defeat Crooked Joe Biden and we’re going to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

The president’s comment drew widespread chants of “TRUMP! TRUMP! TRUMP!”

Trump also announced the endorsement of seven additional Florida legislators and welcomed them to the stage, flexing his support and reminding Floridians how many representatives and state lawmakers have put their support behind his reelection campaign.

“For seven years you and I have been fighting side by side to rescue our nation from the evil and sinister forces who hate it and want to destroy it,” he continued.

He called the upcoming 2024 presidential election the “most important” election in the history of our lifetime. “We’re going to finish the job we started,” he said.

President Donald Trump called on the “Republican establishment” on Saturday evening in Kissimmee, Florida, to unite behind his reelection bid and abandon support for “weak RINOs and Never-Trumpers that nobody wants on the ballot.”

During remarks at the Florida Freedom Summit, he encouraged unity, stating that GOP voters and the establishment itself needed to coalesce behind one candidate “that can withstand the attacks from the left.”

“Every dollar that we spend on these Never-Trump PACS is a dollar that’s being donated to reelect Joe Biden,” he explained.

He urged conservatives to pull together, stating, “We need to put EVERY dollar and EVERY bit of energy” into supporting one candidate.

Trump also pointed out that during the third GOP presidential debate, he would be holding a signature rally in Hialeah, Florida, telling the crowd that he hoped everyone would be there.

Although Florida is Gov. Ron DeSantis’s, R-Fla., home state, Trump pulled no punches in going after his GOP opponent, noting that the governor’s position in the polling was fading fast. He likened Gov. DeSantis’s downward spiral in the polls to “a wounded, falling bird from the sky.”

He insisted that GOP voters did indeed care about what he saw as DeSantis’s political disloyalty – considering the fact that Trump’s endorsement boosted the Florida governor’s initial election bid in the Sunshine State.

“THEY DO CARE,” he said.

In Florida, President Donald Trump has a sizeable lead over Gov. DeSantis, leading by 35 points in a GOP primary poll conducted in early October by Fabrizio, Lee & Associates.

After last month's dismal 3Y auction, which priced with one of the highest tails on record, some rates traders had a foreboding sense of deja vu ahead of today;s $48 billion sale of 3 year paper dreading a repeat of October. Luckily, it was not meant to be because after last week's bondgasm which sent yields sharply lower across the curve, today's 3Y auction not one came off without a hitch, but saw the highest demand since August.

Here are the details: the high yield of 4.701% was not only below last month's near-record stop of 4.723%, it also stopped through the 4.702% When Issued by the smallest of increments, of 0.1bps. This was the first stop following two tails of which last month's 1.7bps was especially harrowing and was the third highest in the past decade.

The bid to cover was nothing special: at 2.668 it was above last month's 2.562 but excluding that, it was the lowest since April and well below the six-auction average of 2.787.

The internals were far better, with Indirects spiking from last month's 56.0% to 64.6%, the highest since August, and in line with the recent average of 65.319. Overall, this was a very impressive auction, and certainly stellar compared to last month's dismal 3Y offering. No surprise that moments after the results, yields across the curve and especially at the 10Y tenor slid to session lows just below 4.57% as the rollercoaster in TSY yields continues.

Foreign National Pleads Guilty to Role in Immigration Fraud and Money Laundering Scheme

An Israeli national pleaded guilty today to his role in a conspiracy to launder money and facilitate the illegal entry, harboring, and transporting of noncitizens in the United States for the purpose of their employment.

According to court documents, Shai Cohen, 39, admitted to organizing and working with others to recruit and facilitate the illegal entry of Israeli citizens into the United States under false pretenses. From approximately 2011 through December 2013, Cohen and his co-conspirators assisted noncitizens in fraudulently obtaining B-1/B-2 tourist/visitor visas by misrepresenting the true purpose of their travel to the United States, which was illegal employment. Cohen and his co-conspirators then assisted the noncitizens in traveling to the United States. Upon arrival, the noncitizens were employed at various kiosks owned and operated by Cohen and his co-conspirators in malls in Virginia and Maryland, despite entering the United States in a visa status that did not allow them to work. The noncitizens who engaged in illegal employment were primarily compensated for their work by under-the-table cash payments or the transfer of money to stored value payment cards, rather than through a legitimate payroll system. Cohen also provided housing and transportation for the noncitizens to and from work in the United States. Cohen and his co-conspirators also used foreign and domestic bank accounts for financial transactions to pay for leased office space, apartments, airline tickets, vehicles, and other business costs in furtherance of and to promote the criminal scheme.

Cohen was arrested in Israel pursuant to a U.S. request for his extradition. In August, he was extradited to the Eastern District of Virginia.

Former North Dakota State Senator Charged for Traveling with the Intent to Engage in Illicit Sexual Conduct with a Minor and Receiving Child Pornography

A former North Dakota state senator made his initial appearance in the U.S. District Court for the District of North Dakota yesterday to face charges for traveling to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor and receipt and attempted receipt of child pornography.

According to court documents, from June 2011 through November 2016, Raymon Holmberg, 79, of Grand Forks, is alleged to have repeatedly traveled from North Dakota to Prague, Czech Republic, for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex acts with a person under the age of 18 years. Holmberg is also charged with receiving material depicting a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct.

If convicted, Holmberg faces a maximum penalty of 50 years in prison.

Optus outage: millions across Australia without mobile or internet as network goes down

Optus has been hit by a nationwide outage, with its mobile phone and internet services down for millions of Australian customers and businesses.

On its website early on Wednesday, Optus said its engineers were investigating a network fault affecting customers.

Mobile phone users were unable to make or receive calls and mobile internet services were down.

According to the website DownDetector, users started reporting issues around 4am on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for Optus said the company was aware of the issue affecting mobile and internet customers and was working to identify the cause.

“In case of an emergency, customers can still call 000,” the spokesperson said.

Train services were also interrupted in Melbourne due to the Optus outage, with ongoing delays of up to 45 minutes, and cancellations expected.

Northern Health in Melbourne said all phone lines into its hospitals were affected by the outage.

“This includes phone lines into Northern Hospital Epping, Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre, Craigieburn Centre, Kilmore District Hospital, and Victorian Virtual Emergency Department (VVED),” it said in a statement.

Sydney’s Westmead Private Hospital is also affected by the Optus outage, with phone lines down.

The outage has also affected companies that resell Optus services, according to DownDetector, with users reporting issues for Amaysim, Dodo and CatchConnect mobile services.

Today, the Russian Federation withdrew from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE). The combination of Russia’s withdrawal from the CFE Treaty and its continuing full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine – another CFE State Party – has fundamentally altered circumstances that were essential to the CFE States Parties’ consent to be bound by the treaty, and radically transformed the obligations under the treaty. In light of this fundamental change of circumstances, the United States will suspend the operation of all CFE Treaty obligations between itself and every other State Party, effective December 7, consistent with our rights under international law.

This decision to suspend our obligations under the CFE Treaty was taken in close consultation and coordination with our NATO Allies, many of whom are also CFE Treaty States Parties. A number of our CFE partners that are not members of NATO also support suspension of CFE Treaty obligations in response to Russia’s actions.

As reflected in the statement issued at NATO Headquarters today, our Allies unanimously share our view that a situation where the United States and our NATO Allies continue to be militarily constrained by the CFE Treaty, while Russia – whose armed forces are the largest in Europe, and who continues to actively wage a war of aggression against Ukraine using the very forces the treaty aims to constrain – is not, would be unacceptable. Suspension of CFE obligations will strengthen the Alliance’s deterrence and defense capacity by removing restrictions that impact planning, deployments, and exercises – restrictions that no longer bind Russia after Moscow’s withdrawal.

While Russia’s withdrawal from the CFE Treaty further demonstrates Moscow’s continued disregard for arms control, the United States, our NATO Allies, and our responsible partners remain committed to effective conventional arms control as a critical element of Euro-Atlantic security. We will continue to pursue measures that aim to bolster stability and security in Europe by reducing risk, preventing misperceptions, avoiding conflicts, and building trust.

Federal Agency Urges Court to Rule for Mayo Clinic Workers Fired for Refusing COVID Vaccines

A U.S judge erred in ruling against Christians, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said.

Workers fired by the Mayo Clinic for refusing COVID-19 vaccines were wrongly turned down by a federal court, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) said in a new filing.

Nurse Shelly Kiel and paramedic Kenneth Ringhofer plausibly made their cases that they held a religious belief that requires accommodation under federal law, the EEOC said in an Oct. 31 amicus brief to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit.

U.S. District Judge John Tunheim wrongly rejected the claims from the former Mayo Clinic workers, the EEOC said.

"As the burden to plausibly plead a religious belief is light, courts should not resolve the nature of such beliefs on a motion to dismiss unless they cannot reasonably infer that the relevant belief is religious," the executive branch agency said.

Judge Tunheim, appointed under President Bill Clinton, ruled in August that Ms. Kiel's belief that her body is a temple and that vaccination was impure was not sufficiently tied to religion and that Mr. Ringhofer's position represented personal judgment, not a religious belief.

"The Mayo Clinic plaintiffs are absolutely thrilled with the EEOC’s decision to intervene," Gregory Erickson, a lawyer representing the former workers, told The Epoch Times in an email. ...

Voting machines went down in Palmer Township, Bethany Wesleyan Church in Lehigh Township, College Hill Presbyterian Church in Easton, and at the Allen Township Fire Hall.

The voting machines only flipped votes in the retention race between Judge Jack Panella and Judge Victor Stabile for the Pennsylvania Superior Court.

In a press release, the Northampton County Elections Office stated: “It appears that when a voter selects a “Yes” or a “No” for one of the candidates for retention to the Pennsylvania Superior Court, the selection is recorded on the paper ballot and on the machine for the other candidate.”

The statement continued, “The issue is limited to the retention of Superior Court Judges and is only an issue when recording the votes for when a voter selected a “Yes” for one candidate and a “No” for another candidate.”

Election Day got off to a rough start in the Lehigh Valley, with major problems at multiple districts across Northampton County.

Voters were filling out paper ballots — seemingly because some machines were not being used due to a flaw with the recording of votes for one race.

A statement from the county said the issue affected the votes for retention to the Pennsylvania Superior Court, affecting Judge Jack Panella and Judge Victor P. Stabile.

Some of the votes were getting flipped and not recorded properly, according to the county.

BREAKING: I just got word that two officers are due to be fired over the the release of the #NashvilleManifesto pages.

Allegedly, the documents were sold by one of the officers.

Yesterday I said that I wanted to wait to report on the released pages because while it was a major break, I felt the documents were incomplete and did not paint an accurate picture of what transpired given the amount of evidence we know was collected in the aftermath of the horrific shooting.

I am glad I waited. Yesterday evening I was contacted by a source with more concrete information regarding all of details on #AudreyHale ‘s many notebooks and what her true motive was. I will be breaking this on my podcast today.

Thanks to a new settlement between Pennsylvania and a coalition of election security groups, the commonwealth’s Department of State will soon require counties to publicly report voting machine malfunctions — a measure that election experts say could be the first of its kind.

Counties are still awaiting details on what the program — which begins with this November’s municipal election — will look like. But experts saythe new reports, which must be posted publicly, could present a unique opportunity to improve efficiency while combating the kind of election misinformation that has become routine in recent cycles.

The settlement caps a longstanding lawsuit, in which the election groups sued the state after a few counties adopted new voting machines that the groups argued were flawed.

“As fringe conspiracy theories and false claims about election results aboundin our civil discourse, this case is a win-win for voters and for election officials who wish to protect both the transparency and the credibility of election results,” said Ben-Zion Ptashnik, president of the bipartisan National Election Defense Coalition, one of the plaintiffs. “It allows future elections to be safer from manipulations, and inoculates election technology from those wishing to undermine the credibility of our democratic institutions.”

Along with having the state direct counties to report malfunctions, the settlement agreement requires the department to give the public better opportunities to witness its voting equipment examination process and requires that the three counties using the voting machine, called the ExpressVote XL, upgrade to its latest software.

Along with the National Election Defense Coalition, the groups involved in the suit against the Department of State include the Pennsylvania-based Citizens for Better Elections, the election equality nonprofit Free Speech for People, and a cohort of several Pennsylvania voters.

Their dispute with Pennsylvania began in July 2019, following Philadelphia’s controversial selection of the ExpressVote XL as its voting system of choice.

Massive fire destroys landmark World War II-era blimp hangar in California

A massive fire ripped through a historic blimp hangar at a former air base in Southern California, where several TV shows and movies have been shot, including “Pearl Harbor” and “Star Trek.”

The blaze broke out about 1 a.m. Tuesday at the Marine Corps Air Station in Tustin, according to the Orange County Fire Authority, which posted dramatic video of the giant landmark going up in flames.

No injuries were immediately reported.

Parts of the roof collapsed to the ground as dozens of firefighters took up positions outside the hanger, which is usually empty, NBC Los Angeles reported.

The structure, also known as Hangar 1, was still burning hours later.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

“It’s definitely not a normal fire, but today because of the complex fire operation, our incident commanders decided that they are going to use helicopters along with the truck companies,” fire Capt. Thanh Nguyen said, according to KTLA.

The Chinook helicopters are usually used to fight wildfires.

“Our firefighters are situated outside [the hangar] and they are placing their units in the most advantageous spots to get water into the structure. Then, should the building collapse, they are not in the line of fire,” he added.

The conflagration also risked spreading to a second blimp hangar.

The twin hangars — which measure 17 stories tall, over 1,000 feet long and about 300 feet wide — are two of the world’s largest freestanding wooden structures and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, according to KTLA.

They have been at Warner Avenue since World War II and were the home port of a dozen blimps used for submarine patrol and later helicopters before being decommissioned in 1999.

Several blockbuster movies and prominent TV shows have been shot in the hangars, including “Pearl Harbor, “Star Trek,” “JAG” and “The X Files,” NBC LA reported.

In addition, the Tustin Hangar 5K race has been held there.

“It’s a sad day for the city of Tustin, for all of Orange County,” Orange County Fire Chief Brian Fennessy told reporters.

Seventy firefighters on 11 engines and five firetrucks responded, along with the choppers, the LA Times reported.

“That’s unheard of,” Fennessy said about using aerial resources. “But we thought we would throw everything we could at it just in case we could stop it midway.”

Debbie Baker, 70, was awakened about 1:30 a.m. by the sounds of helicopters flying above her nearby home.

“It’s so sad. For years those hangars welcomed us home. It’s what made this community special,” she told the newspaper as her voice broke with emotion.

The hangars, which were erected by the military in 1942 as part of the now-defunct Tustin Naval Air Station, were built mostly from Oregon Douglas fir, according to the LA Times.

Metallic salts were used in the wood as a fire retardant.

Tustin Mayor Austin Lumbard said many residents had personal connections to the hangars by working on the base.

“This is not the end for what we call the north hangar that was envisioned,” Lumbard told the LA Times. “It’s not the dignified treatment that it deserves.”

A man found parked near the United States Capitol, who had an AR-15 rifle in his possession, has been arrested.

“USCP Officers just arrested a man with a gun in the park across from Union Station,” U.S. Capitol Police wrote on X just before 1 p.m. local time. “At this time we have no reason to believe there is an ongoing threat. We are working to gather more information and will put out more details when they are confirmed.”

Police confirmed that the suspect was stopped on the Senate side of the Capitol and was put in custody after receiving an emergency call.

According to videos from the scene, the suspect was a Black man wearing a bright orange sweat suit.

He was arrested and loaded into an ambulance after police tased the suspect following a standoff with an officer.

Additionally, Capitol Police said they were also responding to calls of a “suspicious package” in the park area near the building.

With the suspect in custody, authorities have said the investigation is still ongoing, but the area of the park has since been secured.

St. Louis man tries to steal baby out of mother’s arms, camera captures

Surveillance cameras operated by the Central West End Security Initiative captured the dramatic moments Sunday morning when a mother carrying her child was attacked in St. Louis.

The child’s father is seen pushing back the attacker while the mother carries the child away near Euclid Avenue and West Pine Boulevard.

St. Louis police reported the series of attacks that took place near that intersection in a short period of time. Anthony McGee, 19, was quickly taken into custody after witnesses called the police.

McGee is facing multiple charges, including first-degree assault, first-degree kidnapping, and resisting arrest. Police allege McGee attacked the mother and daughter, struck another woman in the head with a bottle, and chocked an 82-year-old woman on a sidewalk, resulting in both her arms being broken.

Clayton Police recently arrested McGee and allege he punched a woman walking south along Big Bend Boulevard. Washington University police reported the victim was a Washington University Student.

“He’s obviously a danger to the community and could be a danger to himself as well,” said Jim Whyte, the executive director of the Central West End Neighborhood Security Initiative. He said security cameras in the neighborhood are continuously reviewed and have been an effective tool in helping with investigations.

“We do a wonderful job, I think, helping police identify and capture those that commit crimes in this neighborhood,” Whyte said.

DENVER (KDVR) — Former CBI scientist Yvonne “Missy” Woods is now under investigation for “anomalies” found in her DNA testing at the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Woods worked with CBI for 29 years but is no longer employed there. A review of her work is underway internally and criminally, the bureau said.

Over the years, Woods was connected to some high-profile cases, including the Kobe Bryant sex assault case that was eventually dropped, the Susannah Chase murder case and the Alex Ewing hammer killings case.

CBI said the anomalies were found while reviewing a sampling of cases as part of an internal process. “We just don’t know how big of a deal this is. The report gives me the heebie-jeebies, but I really want to see what exactly an anomaly is,” FOX31 legal analyst George Brauchler, a former district attorney, said. “As a prosecutor, this is the kind of thing that freaks you out because you don’t want to send anybody to prison that shouldn’t go to prison,” he said.

If problems with Woods’ DNA testing are confirmed, that could potentially have serious implications. “If I’m a defense attorney and I’ve had a client sent to prison or convicted with this kind of evidence with this witness, my antenna is up,” Brauchler said.

Ryan Brackley, Woods’ attorney, sent a statement that said: “Ms Woods has been a loyal, dedicated and well-respected forensic scientist with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation for close to 30 years. She’s worked with and trained generations of prosecutors, scientists and law enforcement agents over those years. Ms Woods expects nothing less than a full, complete and professional investigation into these allegations and has already communicated her intent to cooperate with CBI’s inquiry. Ms Woods will have no further statement at this time.”

CBI is conducting an internal affairs investigation along with experts from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, and CBI is looking for an outside state agency to conduct the criminal investigation.

CBI is also conducting a review of testing procedures and processes and said it will notify public safety partners as it reviews cases that are potentially impacted.
