Angry Birds, Stack: Israeli ads showing Hamas atrocities pop up in children’s video games
London: Maria Julia Assis was sitting down to a meal in her terraced home in north London when her six-year-old son ran into the dining room, his face pale.
The puzzle game on his Android phone had been interrupted by a video showing Hamas militants, terrified Israeli families and blurred graphic footage.
Over a black screen, messages in capital letters from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs told the first-year student: “We’re being murdered in our homes, executed in our beds … We will make sure that those who harm us pay a heavy price.”
Assis, a 28-year-old barista from Brazil, said that the ad left her son shaken and she quickly deleted the game.
“He was shocked,” she said in a telephone interview. “He literally said, ‘What is this bloody ad doing in my game?’”
Reuters has not been able to establish how the ad came to her son’s video game, but her family isn’t alone. The news agency has documented at least five other cases across Europe where the same pro-Israel video, which carried footage of rocket attacks, a fiery explosion, and masked gunmen, was shown to gamers, including several children.
In at least one case, the ads were played inside the popular Angry Birds game made by SEGA-owned developer Rovio.
Rovio confirmed that “somehow these ads with disturbing content have in error made it through to our game” and were now being blocked manually. Spokesperson Lotta Backlund did not provide details on which of its “dozen or so ad partners” had supplied it with the ad.
Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ head of digital, David Saranga, confirmed that the video was a government-promoted ad but said he had “no idea” how it ended up inside various games.
He said the footage was part of a larger advocacy drive by the Israeli Foreign Ministry, which has spent $US1.5 million ($2.4 million) on internet ads since Hamas’ October 7 attack on civilians in southern Israel ignited war in Gaza.
Saranga said officials had specifically instructed advertisers “to block it for people under 18” and defended the graphic nature of the ad campaign.
“We want the world to understand that what happened here in Israel,” he said. “It’s a massacre.”
Reuters contacted 43 advertising firms that Rovio listed on its website as “third-party data partners” to try to ascertain who placed the ad in the games.

Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip killed three Palestinian journalists on October 25 in one of the deadliest days for local reporters since the military’s bombing campaign began nearly three weeks before. As the hours passed, footage appeared showing the moment Ramallah-based journalist Mohammed Farra learned that his wife and children were all killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza’s Khan Younes neighborhood.
Similarly heart-rending scenes would play out more than once over the course of the day. Elsewhere in the besieged coastal enclave, an Israeli airstrike killed the wife, son, daughter and infant grandson of Al Jazeera Arabic’s Gaza bureau chief, Wael Dahdouh.
Israel’s attacks on Palestinian journalists came hours after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken assured “American Jewish community leaders” that he urged Qatar’s government “to tone down Al Jazeera’s rhetoric about the war in Gaza” during a recent trip to Doha.
Suspicions that Israeli forces deliberately targeted Dahdouh’s family were quickly bolstered by comments from News 13 journalist Zvi Yehezkeli.
“Generally we know the target,” Yehezkeli told audiences within hours of the strike, adding, “for example, today there was a target: the family of an Al Jazeera reporter.”
“In general, we know,” he concluded.

The NYPD will be on high alert at next week’s Greenwich Village Halloween Parade — where costumes can provide cover for extremists looking for “targets of opportunity” as the Israel-Hamas war rages, a cop memo says.
The warning notice, obtained by The Post on Friday, notes that there are no specific or credible threats targeting Tuesday’s parade, which runs from 7 to 11 p.m. along Sixth Avenue between Canal and West 15th streets in Manhattan.
But the gathering – known to draw about 60,000 people decked out in their spookiest and wildest get-ups – could be an easy target for “malicious actors” looking to do harm, the department said.
“The large numbers of costumed participants and spectators present a unique challenge for law enforcement authorities providing crowd security, as bulky clothing, masks and props could aid in the concealment of weapons and identities,” the memo says.

As an example of violent extremists striking on Halloween, the memo pointed to the Oct. 31, 2017, attack in which ISIS fanatic Sayfullo Saipov allegedly plowed a van over a crowded bike path along the West Side Highway, killing eight people and injuring at least 11 others, including three children.
He was sentenced earlier this year to more than eight lifetimes in prison.

Driver Charged With Killing 4 Pepperdine Students Released After Posting $4M Bond

A California baseball player who was charged with the killing of four Pepperdine University students after he allegedly lost control of his BMW on the Pacific Coast Highway, has been set free after posting a $4 million bond.
22-year-old Fraser Bohm posted bond on Friday. He pleaded not guilty to killing Pepperdine seniors Niamh Rolsten, 20, Peyton Stewart, 21, Asha Weir, 21, and Deslyn Williams, 21.
On October 17th Bohm was allegedly darting his red BMW down the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu at about 104 mph when he lost control and crashed into multiple parked vehicles, striking the four sorority sisters who were walking nearby.
22-year-old Bohm was arrested at the scene for gross vehicular manslaughter, but was released from custody just hours later as officers investigated further.
He was rearrested on murder and vehicular manslaughter charges but only spent three days in jail before posting bond.
“The investigation revealed the defendant knew his actions were dangerous to human life and directly acted with conscious disregard for human life,” said L.A. County District Attorney George Gascon.
Bohm’s defense attorney, Michael Kraut, argues he was a victim of road rage and that the crash occurred because Bohm was being chased by another driver.
“We have evidence that the sheriff’s department did not want to take that clearly shows that there was a road rage incident… this person chased him and tried to push him off the side of the road, and when he accelerated to get away from him that’s when the accident occurred,” said Kraut.
Officers said there’s no evidence suggesting road rage played a role in the crash.
Both left the crash site scratch-freed and witnesses even claim he tried to flee the scene but was stopped by onlookers.
The District Attorney’s office said if convicted, Bohm could face multiple life sentences.
The crash site is reportedly known to locals as “Dead Man’s Curve.” Advocates for traffic safety recently held demonstrations calling for the dangerous roadway to undergo improvements, such as installing speed cameras or increasing police presence in the area.
Michael Shane, whose daughter was killed on PCH in 2010, told KTTV not much has changed since his daughter’s death and it’s sad that four students had to die in order for city officials to act on making improvements.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is refusing to recall Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine, promoting the view that the inclusion of a previously-undisclosed DNA sequence that leaves behind fragments is not of concern.
The FDA is not required to take Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine, or other COVID-19 shots, off the market, an agency spokeswoman told The Epoch Times via email.
"With over a billion doses of the mRNA vaccines administered, no safety concerns related to the sequence of, or amount of, residual DNA have been identified. With regard to the FDA-approved mRNA vaccines, available scientific evidence supports the conclusion that they are safe and effective," the spokeswoman added.
The FDA did not provide any evidence to back up its position.
The email came in response to 10 questions about the inclusion of the Simian Virus 40 (SV40) DNA sequence in the Pfizer-BioNTech shot.
The Epoch Times has submitted a Freedom of Information Act query to try to unlock when the FDA learned about the sequence, and from whom. The FDA denied expedited processing for the request, claiming there is not a "compelling need" to quickly provide the information.Several foreign agencies, including Health Canada, have confirmed outside scientists' assessment that the vaccine contains the DNA sequence. They've also said Pfizer did not highlight the inclusion in regulatory filings.
The FDA would not answer a number of questions about the sequence, including when the agency learned about its inclusion and whether it learned about it from Pfizer.
Pfizer and its partner, BioNTech, have not responded to inquiries.
The inclusion was first identified by Kevin McKernan, a former researcher and team leader for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Human Genome Project.
"Nothing will be identified if they continue to choose not to look," Mr. McKernan told The Epoch Times via email.

- The group departed Monday from the Chiapas city of Tapachula, which borders Guatemala, where they grew tired of waiting for refugee and visa approval
- It's believed to be the largest caravan since 6,000 people left Tapachula for the U.S. border in June 2022
As many as 5,000 migrants are marching from the southern Mexico state of Chiapas in hopes of reaching the northern border region with the United States.
Migrants from Central America, Venezuela, Cuba and Haiti initiated the trek Monday after they had grown frustrated with the long wait times the Mexican government was taking to process their refugee or exit visa applications at the main immigration processing center in the Chiapas town of Tapachula, near the Guatemala border.
Mexico's National Migration Institute, which is tasked with approving or denying the applications, has been backed up with requests. Migrants normally wait weeks or months to have their status legalized, which allows them to work and move freely in the country.
The march is said to be the largest since June 2022 when 6,000 people, many from Venezuela, took off from Tapachula.
Single adults and family units were seen traveling along the highway under the sun Monday as police served as escorts.
The group stopped traveled close to nine miles, reaching the municipality of Alvaro Obregón, where they camped out overnight, according to Mexican-American activist Irineo Mújica, one of the caravan organizers.
They were back on the road on Tuesday by 5am and planned to advance another 15 miles, according to Univision.
Venezuelan national Daniel González said that he had been on the road for three months and is not planning on returning because of the dire economic situation back home.

Oscar Gutiérrez also abandoned Venezuela with his wife and two daughters and hopes the administration of President Joe Biden will allow them to resettle there.
'In Venezuela things are very tough, we can't live with the money we get, it's not enough for us, and that's why we're going to the United States,' he said.
'We're going to keep going,' he said. 'In Tapachula, nobody helps us.'
Honduras native Leonel Olveras said: 'The don't give out papers here. They ask us to wait for months. It's too long.'
Irineo Mújica, who in the past has been at the forefront of mass migrant, called for transit visas that will permit migrants to cross Mexico on their way to the U.S. border.
Some of the migrants in Tapachula had expressed interest to work for the government and help with the recovery efforts in the resort city of Acapulco, which was ravaged last week by Hurricane Otis.
'We are trying to save lives with this kind of actions,' Mújica said. 'They (Mexican authorities) have ignored the problem and left the migrants stranded.'
The latest caravan comes at a time when President Biden is facing intense pressure to shut down the entre of undocumented immigrants at the southwestern United States border.
U.S. Customs Border and Protection recorded 269,735 encounters along the southern border region in September, the most since December 2022 when 252,315 interdictions were registered.
Overall, CBP reported 2,475,669 interdictions in fiscal year 2023 (October 2022 to September 2022), surpassing the previous fiscal year when 2,378,944 encounters were recorded.
'In response to high rates of encounters across the southwest border in September, CBP surged resources and personnel,' CBP acting commissioner Troy A. Miller said in an October 21 statement. 'We are continually engaging with domestic and foreign partners to address historic hemispheric migration, including large migrant groups traveling on freight trains, and to enforce consequences including by preparing for direct repatriations to Venezuela.'

Oil prices tumbled to 2 month lows as the war premium ebbed amid a (somewhat surprising) belief that the Israel-Hamas conflict will remain contained, bringing demand fears back amid higher rates and a slowing global economy.
Oil’s downward trajectory over the past few days “continues to point to market expectations of a localized conflict,” said Dan Ghali, a commodity strategist at TD Securities.
A bank analysis of geopolitical risk events shows that the premium from a war “tends to fade as soon as one month following the onset of the conflict.”
On the Middle East front, oil traders have "likely shifted into efficient market mode, waiting for signs of a definitive escalation that imperils supply before taking prices higher," Stephen Innes, managing partner at SPI Asset Management, said in market commentary.

An Energy Department study released Monday finds Biden administration to achieve its clean energy goals must at least double the existing regional power line capacity by 2035.
An announcement on the study says existing power line capacity isn’t adequate to carry electricity from an increasing number of wind and solar farms, nor can it handle increased charging demand from electric vehicles.
“Today’s grid cannot adequately support 21st century challenges – including the integration of new clean-energy sources and growing transportation and building electrification – while remaining resilient in the face of extreme weather exacerbated by climate change,” the announcement stated.
The study divides the U.S. grid into 15 different regions. Alaska, California, Florida, Hawaii, New York and Texas are treated as separate regions. Other regions such as the Northwest, which includes Idaho, Oregon, Washington and parts of Montana, are composed of multiple states.
The “National Transmission Needs Study” found that transmission lines that join the regions will need to increase five fold to meet the president’s clean energy goals.
A recent report from the International Energy Agency estimated the world would need to build or refurbish 50 million miles of transmission lines in the next 17 years to meet the goals of the international emissions reduction targets of the Paris Agreement.
Besides the capital costs, which run into the millions of dollars per mile, experts warn that transmission line construction runs up against supply chain issues, land use conflicts and labor shortages, making the goals difficult, if not impossible, to achieve.

US should commit 100 nuclear weapons to defend South Korea – lobbyists
The North’s own atomic arsenal could number 300 by the end of the decade, two pressure groups have claimed
The US and South Korea should collaborate to modernize about 100 tactical nuclear weapons to bolster Seoul’s defenses against an alleged growing threat from Pyongyang, according to a recommendation fromtwo defense industry-linked think tanks on Monday.
North Korea has “already established a nuclear weapon force that could pose an existential threat” to South Korea’s security and is “on the verge” of establishing a similar threat to the US, theAsan Institute for Policy Studiesclaimed in a report titled ‘Options for Strengthening ROK (Republic of Korea) Nuclear Assurance’. The study was conducted in conjunction with American military industry lobby group, theRAND Corporation.
Approximately 100 US nuclear weapons should be modernized at South Korea's expense, the study recommended, adding that they should be housed on US soil but be rapidly deployable to support Seoul’s defensive requirements.
“[North Korean leader] Kim Jong-un appears to be planning a force of at least 300 to 500 nuclear weapons,” the authors of the study claimed, suggesting that Pyongyang could break the 300-weapon threshold by around 2030.
The report stated that North Korea’s current nuclear capabilities include weapons that could kill about 2 million people if launched towards its southern neighbor. Pyongyang has ambitions of using its nuclear arsenal in order to test Washington’s resolve towards its alliance with Seoul, it added, also alleging that the North hopes to “dominate South Korea without having to invade it.”
It further recommended a process to pressure North Korea to relent in its nuclear weapons program by storing some US weapons in South Korea “for both symbolic and operational purposes,” and having “all or part of the nuclear weapons on a US ballistic missile submarine operating in the Pacific to target North Korea.”
In April, US President Joe Biden and his South Korean counterpart, Yoon Suk Yeol, signed the Washington Declaration, in which the US agreed to extend its military deterrence partnership with Seoul amid an increase in North Korean ballistic missile testing.
Pyongyang has conducted numerous missile tests this year, including an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that traveled for almost 1,000km (620 miles) before splashing down in waters west of Japan. This led to increased US and South Korean naval drills in the area.
Last month, North Korea also held a simulation of a tactical nuclear strike that included two long-range missiles. The exercise was intended to “warn enemies,” North Korea’s KCNA news agency said.
The Asan Institute of Policy Studies describes itself as a “non-partisan think tank” dedicated to “undertaking policy-relevant research to foster domestic, regional and international environments” regarding peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. (There is no such thing as a non-partisan think tank, they are all funded by their favorite political creatures)

Once the weakness, seams and gaps are discovered, they bring in the parts of the main body of the assault.”
“Over time, we could see the entire ground force in Gaza fully engaged in fighting Hamas by this effort,” Mulroy continued.
The former head of the U.S. Central Command, retired Marine Gen. Frank McKenzie, said that purposeful movements into Gaza — as opposed to a full-scale invasion — also ensure the IDF doesn’t get stretched thin.
“This is an infantry fight,” he said. “A lot is going to be put on people on the ground, not just on the front lines, but behind the front lines, ensuring that you are secure [and] that Hamas is not going to pop up in your rear and attack your command posts, your medical aid stations and your all your logistics elements.”
Hamas is equipped with thousands of gallons of fuel that can be used for vehicles and rockets, ammunition, plenty of food and water and medicine — an indication of just how long it has had to prepare for a fight like this. Before this new phase, the Gaza health ministry claimed nearly 8,000 Palestinians had been killed during Israeli retributory strikes and the siege of Gaza, which followed Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack that saw 1,400 Israelis slain.
In his own remarks Saturday, Gallant couched the operation in stark terms, saying, “This will not be a short war. It is a long war that will require us to be strong, as individuals, as a society, as leaders. Above all, our security forces will be strong. This is a war on our home. This is a war we didn’t choose. It’s either us or them.”

Walmart has unveiled over 100 revamped stores - as part of a $9 billion investment over the past two years to upgrade more than 1,400 of its 4,700 locations nationwide.
The chain is devoting more of its floor and retail space to online grocery pickup and delivery in its modernized stores, and has added new 'dollar shops' next to checkout.
Walmart pharmacies have been moved towards the front of the remodeled stores, the company said in a statement Monday, with new private screening rooms for pharmacist consultations and services.
The retail giant reopened 117 stores in 30 states at a cost of half a billion dollars, in a bid to boost sales.
Hunter Hart, senior vice president at Walmart Realty said: 'Each store is designed to deliver a more modern shopping experience and improve the lives of our associates and customers from the moment they step into the new space.'
Alongside fresh exteriors, signs, more shopping carts and more grab-and-go food and beverage options, other changes include touch-and-feel displays for home goods such as bedding.
The retailer said it was pulling big and bulky merchandise from boxes and onto corner displays so shoppers can imagine how it could fit into their home.
Digital touchpoints have also been placed throughout the store to provide more information on products and services, the company said.
Walmart also said customers will benefit from more checkout options, including both staffed registers and self-checkouts, in the new stores.
The retailer is making more room for online grocery pickup and delivery in the new stores, as its e-commerce business is growing.
As of figures from August, the company's US e-commerce sales grew 24 percent from the year before.
This is compared to growth of 6.4 percent for comparable in-store sales.
It comes after it emerged Walmart rival Target was testing a major self-checkout change at some of its stores in a bid to speed up the shopping process for customers.
The retailer is limiting the self-service lanes to customers who are purchasing 10 items or fewer - to try and reduce lengthy lines that can build up in store.
The company confirmed to DailyMail.com that it was testing the limit on items in order to reduce wait times and better understand guest preferences.
It did not confirm the specific Target locations where the trial was taking place, or whether the policy would later be rolled out nationwide.
Many big-name retailers are making changes to store layouts as companies across the US are battling against a rising wave of crime - forcing many outlets to close.
A recent report from the National Retail Federation said the sector is under an 'unprecedented' threat from crime and violence, with store owners fearing for their livelihoods as well as their safety.
It found that shrink, the total losses incurred by retailers, rose by $20 billion in a year to an eye-watering $112.2 billion in 2022.
And with up to 70 percent of shrink accounted for by theft, it means retailers lost approximately $78.4 billion to shoplifters.
