Time capsule buried at ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope

Last week, a time capsule commemorating ESO staff, science, technology and cooperation between ESO and Chile was buried in a ceremony at the construction site of ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), on Cerro Armazones in the Chilean Atacama Desert.
The capsule was sealed at the first stone ceremony in 2017, when construction on the soon-to-be “world’s biggest eye on the sky” began. Serving as a symbolic message to future generations, it contains mementos from Chilean authorities, including a plaque from the then President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet Jeria, about opening the skies of the country to the questions of an entire planet, as well as drawings from Chilean children featuring the Universe, ESO telescopes and northern Chile landscapes. The capsule also includes a mosaic of photographs of ESO staff and a copy of a book describing the future scientific goals of the telescope [1]. Covering it is an engraved hexagon made of Zerodur®, a one-fifth-scale model of one of the ELT’s primary mirror segments.
Last week, ESO Council members and staff visited the ELT site to bury the capsule in the wall of the ELT dome in an event led by ESO Council President Linda Tacconi (Germany) and Vice-President Mirjam Lieshout-Vijverberg (The Netherlands). In a separate event a few days later, a second group of Council members led by Rafael Bachiller (Spain) and Jan Buriánek (Czech Republic) installed a commemorative plaque on the wall where the capsule is buried.
Recently, construction of the ELT passed 50% completion, well on the way to beginning scientific operations later this decade. This milestone happens in the year ESO and Chile are commemorating their 60-year partnership, which has enabled the establishment of unique observatories in the Atacama Desert and the development of a strong scientific community.
As the largest optical and infrared telescope in the world, the ELT will shift our understanding of the Universe. Its scientific goals range from the Solar System to the edge of the observable universe, including exoplanets, black holes, and the first stars and galaxies. It will search for answers to some of the biggest open questions in astronomy: is there life elsewhere in the Universe? What is the nature of dark matter and dark energy? Are the laws of nature universal? It may also answer yet unknown questions — who knows what the ELT will have discovered by the time the capsule is opened?

An off-duty pilot accused of trying to shut off the engines on a packed-out Alaska Airlines passenger jet on Sunday has been charged with 83 counts of attempted murder. Joseph David Emerson, 44, faces the litany of homicide charges along with an additional 83 counts of reckless endangerment and one count of endangering an aircraft, police documents show. Emerson is believed to have been sat in the jump seat beside the operating pilot on board a Embraer 175 plane flying from Everett in suburban Seattle to San Francisco. He is accused of attempting to deploy the fire suppression system before crew members managed to 'subdue' him and remove him from the controls, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Alaska Airlines said the flight, which departed Washington state at 5.23pm, was diverted to Portland International Airport following the 'security threat'.

Tokyo, Oct. 23 (Jiji Press)-Japan's Fair Trade Commission said Monday that it has opened an investigation into Google LLC on suspicion of unreasonably demanding that smartphone makers favor its apps over rival products, in violation of the antimonopoly law.
It was the first time for the FTC to disclose an individual case at the initial stage of its probe.
U.S. and European regulatory authorities concluded through their investigations into the U.S. technology giant that the company unfairly restricted competition for more than a decade. The FTC suspects that Google may have tried to take an advantageous position in the Japanese smartphone market.
According to the FTC, Google allegedly asked Android mobile device makers to install on their devices its own search app Google Search and browser app Google Chrome in exchange for allowing their devices to feature its dedicated app store. Google also requested that the apps be given preferential treatment when makers decide where to place their icons on screen.
The U.S. firm also allegedly formed contracts with smartphone makers to provide them with part of advertising revenues in exchange for not preinstalling rival search engine apps on their devices, the FTC said.

In 2022, the World Health Assembly quietly agreed to reduce the period during which nations have to opt out of future amendments to the International Health Regulations. We didn’t agree to this, they just did it.
For nations to retain the longer 18-month period previously allowed for nations to opt out, countries need to send the World Health Organisation a short note that they are opting out of the amendments decided by the World Health Assembly in 2022.
This will slow down the “warp speed” at which WHO is trying to gain sovereignty over nations’ health and emergency management and send a message to the world that your nation is not happy about what WHO is doing.

On October 28, 2016, the New York Observer, owned by former President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, released a leaked audio clip from back in 2006 in which Hillary Clinton proposed rigging a foreign election to achieve the desired outcome that she wanted.
The media did not report on the audio clip when it was released in 2016 because it would have been extremely damaging to then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
The Gateway Pundit was one of the few news outlets in 2016 that covered this explosive report.
The audio, which is making rounds again on various news platforms due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, captured Hillary Clinton, during her tenure as a U.S. Senator, discussing the idea of rigging the Palestinian elections to ensure the “right” outcome.

On September 5, 2006, Eli Chomsky was an editor and staff writer for the Jewish Press, and Hillary Clinton was running for a shoo-in re-election as a U.S. senator. Her trip making the rounds of editorial boards brought her to Brooklyn to meet the editorial board of the Jewish Press.
The tape was never released and has only been heard by the small handful of Jewish Press staffers in the room. According to Chomsky, his old-school audiocassette is the only existent copy and no one has heard it since 2006, until today when he played it for the Observer.
Speaking to the Jewish Press about the January 25, 2006, election for the second Palestinian Legislative Council (the legislature of the Palestinian National Authority), Clinton weighed in about the result, which was a resounding victory for Hamas (74 seats) over the U.S.-preferred Fatah (45 seats).
One of the striking revelations from the tape is Senator Clinton’s critique of the U.S.’s push for elections in the Palestinian territories. Referring to the January 25, 2006, election for the second Palestinian Legislative Council, Clinton expressed regret over the U.S.’s encouragement for an election which eventually saw Hamas clinching a victory over the U.S.-preferred Fatah. She went on to suggest that had the U.S. decided to influence the elections, it should have ensured a favorable outcome.
This sentiment, as recalled by Chomsky, was shocking as it came from a national leader, implying a tolerance towards meddling in foreign elections.
In the audio, Clinton is heard saying, “I do not think we should have pushed for an election in the Palestinian territories. I think that was a big mistake. And if we were going to push for an election, then we should have made sure that we did something to determine who was going to win.”

Israel on Monday screened for some 200 foreign journalists 43 minutes of shocking crimes committed by Hamas savages during their October 7 onslaught on southern Israel, in which over 1,400 people were killed. Some of the presentation includes never-before-seen footage.
They decided to release this screening to counteract a “Holocaust-denial” phenomenon which is starting to permeate across the globe.
The Times of Israel and other outlets printed the gruesome details shared by the IDF. With very few exceptions, journalists were only allowed notepads and pens as the IDF forbade them form sharing the most terrifying footage to the public.
Here are some of the most shocking details revealed:
In one video, a man rolls around on the ground, bleeding from his stomach, as a Hamas terrorist tries in vain to chop his head off with farming equipment. In another clip, an Israeli woman is trying to determine if a partially burned corpse with a mutilated head is that of a family member.
The dead woman’s dress was pulled up to her waist with her underpants removed. She had been raped and torured by the medieval savages before being set ablaze.
In yet another video, a 19-year-old female Israeli soldier is seen wearing bloody sweatpants while being dragged out of the trunk of a car to a chorus of sickening cheers. One man yells in English, “You’re in Gaza!”
A male soldier is pulled from a car, tossed to the ground, and then beaten by a bloodthirsty Palestinian crowd.
Joel Pollak of Breitbart News then describes perhaps the most horrifying video of all: one child had been blinded by the Hamas savages and was covered in his father’s blood after they deliberately targeted his family:
A terrorist peers over the fence and lobs a grenade into the shelter. It bounces off the back wall and explodes.
The father’s body falls forward. A boy appears, covered in his father’s blood, looking at his father.
We see the boy on the couch, now doubled over on the rug. “Why am I alive?” he wails.
He then looks at the brother in the chair. There is a red, black space where his eye used to be. He asks if his brother can see out of that eye. He says that he cannot. The other brother asks again. Are you joking? He repeats that he cannot see.

The latest war in the Holy Land offers no clear-cut victories, as civilians on both sides suffer from the effects of poor leadership
As war rages again in the Middle East, with Israel and Hamas vowing to exterminate each other, the one thing we can be sure of is that neither belligerent will achieve real victory or lasting peace. As usual, that’s probably not even the real goal for the so-called leaders on either side.
Israeli and Hamas officials both claim to be killing the bad guys in order to defend their people, but their actions seem to suggest otherwise. A Hamas official, for instance, told Al-Jazeera TV that the group’s October 7 cross-border attacks in southern Israel were necessary to defend “the dignity and freedom” of the Palestinian people. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged in response to “demolish Hamas” and to ensure that such attacks against his country’s people never happen again.
An examination of the tactics on both sides, past and present, shows that these bitter rivals have been either grossly misguided in trying to achieve their stated goals, or lying about their true motivations. Perhaps it’s some of both.
There was certainly no “dignity” or “freedom” being pursued when Hamas fighters stormed across the border in order to kill or capture as many civilians as possible. The terrorists murdered about 1,300 people, including babies in their beds, and took hundreds of hostages back to Gaza. Some of the gory details are in dispute, but it’s safe to say that Hamas purposely murdered non-combatants and kidnapped men, women and children.
It's also safe to say that no sane leader could have supposed that such an atrocity would serve the interests of the Palestinian people. Hamas militants knew that civilians in Gaza City would pay a heavy price when Israel responded to the attacks, especially since the group has purposely stationed its command centers and weapons caches in or under apartment buildings, hospitals, mosques and schools. They also knew that their bloody rampage would leave the Palestinian people further away from a peace deal – perhaps further than ever – that would create their own state.
That’s by design, of course, because Hamas refuses to recognize Israel or seek any sort of two-state solution. The group’s original founding document called for the obliteration of Israel and the killing of Jews. Hamas aims to create a Palestinian state by force, “from the river to the sea.”
Knowing the genocidal ideology of Hamas and its track record of killing Israelis, it’s hard to fathom how the West Jerusalem government, supposedly so devoted to protecting its citizens, could allow the October 7 attacks to happen. Despite warnings from Egyptian officials, Israeli forces were caught off-guard and took hours to arrive at the scene. For example, concert-goers at a music festival where the terrorists killed an estimated 260 people reportedly had to wait more than six hours for help to arrive.

Update(1235ET): It has become clear at this point that Israel is stalling its 'imminent' ground invasion of Gaza in order to buy more time to negotiate for the release of hostages, now numbered at 222 in Hamas/PIJ captivity. As we detailed below, the White House is putting pressure on Tel Aviv to delay, also no doubt on fears that a full assault will trigger a war with Hezbollah in the north. From there, things could spin out of control, also with Russian, Iranian, and Chinese military assets positioned in the region in addition to an American carrier strike group.
The New York Times is reporting Monday morning that Hamas could be preparing to release 50 hostages with dual citizenship, amid negotiations mediated by Qatar:
The U.S. wants more time for hostage negotiations. On Friday, the U.S. secured the release of two American hostages, with Qatar’s help. Israel believes Hamas may release about 50 hostages who are citizens of another country as well as Israel, but a ground invasion could make hostage releases less likely.
According to more from the NY Times:
A senior Israeli military official said that based on conversations between the United States and Qatar, Hamas could possibly release about 50 dual nationals separate from any broader deal.
The repeated delays also reflect a growing tension between Mr. Netanyahu and Mr. Gallant, his defense minister, who supports a broad military operation that would also include Hezbollah, the powerful militia in Lebanon.
Al-Arabiya has separately issued a headline saying that the hostages will be released "within hours".

Hundreds of suspected violent criminals released without bail in Washington
Washington judges released hundreds of suspected violent criminals without bail, the Spokesman-Review reported Sunday.
Records obtained by the outlet revealed that many people accused of serious violent crimes — including rape, child molestation, assaults, vehicular homicide, and death threats — were allowed to await trial at home instead of being locked inside a jail cell. Such individuals were reportedly released 665 times in Spokane County from January 2021 to September 2023.
A former Spokane police officer accused of raping two women, a man accused of punching a nurse, and another man accused of slashing someone’s face with a handsaw were all released without bail.
County Commissioner Al French told the Spokesman-Review that the findings are “alarming.”
“We are assessing how to respond,” French said. He noted that at one time, he believed the releases were linked to overcrowding, but added that judges have claimed not to make decisions based on jail capacity.
